It's the stuff of dreams and fantasy - a world filled with flying souls, acrobats, dancers and Shamans. Add to that one of LA's most buzzed about bands performing live and what you get is a 360 degree rock and roll circus the defies gravity and expectations.

It's called Shapeshifter from the mind of Jordann Baker who conceived of this theatrical/art/circus/concert event six months ago after watching an aerial performance at Way 2 Much Entertainment. Baker who wrote, produces and directes Shapeshifter also serves as one of the key aerial performers, who, for most of the show, spends it 30 feet in the air, effortlessly swinging above the crowds on silks with no safety net.

The music of Los Angeles' own The Shakers was the inspiration to Baker's beautiful madness.

"The music of The Shakers - one of my favorite bands - inspired me as the show came to life and of course it was only natural that they be the magical vessel for this story," Baker says.

Rescue Team is the latest album by The Shakers, serving as the soundtrack to Shapeshifter and as lead singer Jodie Schell explains, the album is about " we exist to strengthen our spirit and the people we love. The only way to do that is to stand up to the villains, even if it's the one inside you. And when you can't do it alone, you let your rescue team help you."

Baker's dream finally became a reality after a IndieGoGo campaign successfully raised over $10,000 in two months. And after rigorous weeks of training and rehearsals, Shapshifter finally debuted at the Way 2 Much Entertainment Studio (home of the Derby Dolls) on May 23rd.
The daredevil cast, who daringly dazzle above the audience also includes Terril Teran, Rachel Tatem, Hope Hall, Jeffrey Little and Sita Acevedo.  And the high-octane, driving performance of The Shakers consists of Jodie, Chris Lee (lead guitar), Nick Woods (drums) and John Rogan (bass).

Shapeshifter is a show where YOU are actually part of the show; 360 degrees of eye candy - aerialist, acrobats, art and theatrical set pieces. Add to that the adrenalin rush of a live concert and Shapeshifter may have upped the bar for future live shows.

Final shows are Friday (May 30) and Saturday (May 31). Tickets are available at .

Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice finally released their official video for "Moaning Lisa Smile."  In it, Lead singer Ellie Rowsell competes in a talent competition, only to be snubbed by her would-be dance partners.   Think "Little Meets Sunshine" meets "Hedvig and the Angry Inch" in which the video's theme of social acceptance begins with Rowsell trying to fit into a certain group and being rejected. But at its conclusion, what we all can take away from "Moaning Lisa Smile" is that you'll be most happy by just being yourself and find others who will accept you for who you are.  Mwaaaaah.

Alex and Sierra

As the first and only group to win the X Factor USA, Alex & Sierra were a huge success on the show as their stunning performances of “Say Something” and “Gravity” immediately hit #1 on iTunes. The groups performances sold over 1 million singles in the month of December and their Youtube videos have accumulated over 85 million total views. The duo are pleased to announce the release of their debut single, “Scarecrow,” a rollicking folk pop stomper that perfectly melds the singers’ voices. “Scarecrow” was co-written by Alex & Sierra, along with Martin Johnson (Boys Like Girls) and Sam Hollander, the lyric video was directed by Alex Purifoy. “Scarecrow” will be released to iTunes in the coming few weeks along with the official music video premiere in June.

Alex & Sierra’s debut album will be released late 2014.

Jaden Michaels

Songs about heartbreak are a dime a dozen.  Everyone has experienced it and it's the shits!  Luckily, we have talented musicians to express how we feel, to tap into that emotional core that rips our heart out when our hearts get broken and to create that perfect song about it.  Majority of these songs are depressingly fragile in its melodies. A sappy ballad that makes you feel even worse, making you think that you're always going to be alone.  Rubbish!

"Walk On" by Jaden Michaels is different.  This is not a "feel sorry for me I'm hurting" heartbreak song.  This is a strong, stand up for yourself, I don't take shit type of song that breaks the 'all women are fragile little things' mold.

Instead of sulking, the person in the song takes control of her life singing "Too many tears I've cried. What happened to our paradise. We built our walls too high. Nobody can say I didn't try...This is the last goodbye. Turn down the lights and walk on. I think it's better you walked on."   It's anthem about empowerment and it's an anthem about taking control of your life.

The song, premiering last Friday, is Michaels' debut single off of MP45 Records. Already a successful songwriter, writing songs for Jennifer Lopez, Lea Michele and Naya Rivera as well as American Idol's Jessica Sanchez and Candice Glover, Michaels is now ready to step into the spotlight with her own song which is now available digitally everywhere including on iTunes right HERE.

Check out her lyric video below for "Walk On."

Gabriell Aplin

Gabrielle Aplin, the British songstress from across the pond has found massive success following her Gold-selling full-length debut album English Rain.  Now, looking to continue her success on U.S. shores, the 21-year-old singer/songwriter has released her first U.S. debut - the 6-track EP English Rain which features five songs from her celebrated debut album of the same name.  Well, it didn't take long for stateside music lovers to find Gabrielle. They welcomed her with open arms by selling out her first ever North American headlining tour including Los Angeles' famed Hotel Cafe.

It was an early show (7pm) and very much packed in the very intimate Hotel Cafe, an ideal venue for Aplin's soft and delicate songs.  Much, if not all, of English Rain delves into our vulnerabilities as individuals and how we deal with them. Either we succumb to the pressures of life or we triumph over the hardships we all face.

Gabrielle Aplin

Gabrielle pulls us in, mostly, with her captivating vocals, her charming personality  and the rest with her talent for writing honest lyrics  set to delicate acoustic guitar and piano.

Whether it be themes of living in the moment  in "Please Don't Say U Love Me" where she pleads "...fools rush in and I've been the fool before / This time I'm gonna slow it down because I think this could be more...the think I'm looking for," or in "How Do You Feel Today" about how our past haunts us to the point of not being able to looking ahead, Aplin's writing mirrors a life that is wise beyond her years, yet at only 21 years old, she's able to harness a lifetimes worth of heartbreak in her emotional lyrics.

Take for instance "Panic Cord" detailing a one-sided relationship; one side realizing that the  bond is slowly fading.  "This meant more to you than it did to me, I was full of doubt and you believed the more that you keep coming over the more I know it's over..."  .  Although her melodies and lyrics often have a dark and hopeless undertone, there's glimmers of hope in all her songs.

One of the standouts of the night was Aplin's stunning rendition of her favorite artist - Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" which is also included on her English Rain EP.  In fact, growing up in a self-confessed 'hippy' household where music was a family staple, Aplin noted Joni Mitchell as one of her inspirations.

Aplin ended her set with "Home" - another Joni Mitchell-esque tune which also closes out her EP.

Although she's already conquered the U.K. music charts (her full-length album peaked at #2 and her single "The Power of Love" launched to #1 in both the U.K. and Australia's iTunes charts), Aplin is set to make a name for herself in America.  And judging by the reaction from the crowd and the fact that she sold out her first ever U.S. tour, Aplin proved this night that she is  no longer Britain's best-kept secret.

Hotel Cafe Setlist (May 21, 2014): Panic Cord / Stranger Side / Power of Love / Somewhere on the Avenue / Salvation / Keep Pushing Me / A Case of You (Joni Mitchell cover) / How Do You Feel Today / Please Don't Say U Love Me / Home

Brody Dalle

For Brody Dalle's first solo album, she enlisted an all-star cast to play on her new record which dropped this week called Diploid Love.  In addition to the release, Dalle kicks off her her West Coast leg of her tour tonight at San Francisco's Slims.

Diploid Love, is a throwback to the 90s era grunge rock which she helped shape as the frontwoman for the Distillers and Spinnerette.  At times, you feel like you've been listening to that classic cd that's been collecting dust on your shelf but then realize that Diploid Love is actually new and not taken from the 90s bin.  The best part of it? You can relive your high school days while listening to something vintage but still sound modern and refreshing.

Brody wrote all the songs and played almost all the instruments you can hear on the album herself, with a few incredible guests that included Shirley Manson (Garbage), Nick Valensi (The Strokes), Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age), violinist Jessy Greene (recently toured with Foo Fighters), Emily Kokal (Warpaint), Tyler Parkford (Mini Mansions) with Darren Weiss (Papa) and Hayden Scott (AWOLNATION) lending a hand on drums.

Jullian Banks

Jillian Banks, simply known as BANKS is more than a pretty face.  Her style mirrors her music - dark, sleek and brooding.  She calls it hypnotic-fusion and her songs, do indeed, emote a sense of sharp tranquility.  Such is the case with her new single she just dropped today called "Drowning."  Banks' lyrical prowess comes to a head again in the new single that showcases her knack for writing emotional stories that cut deep. In this case, she sings of a relationship that is built on deceit, abuse and lies and how those combinations, once it goes down that path, can sink a relationship.

The song is off her debut album Goddess which is scheduled to be released on September 9th via Harvest Records.  This weekend, Banks begins her first headlining tour of North America which starts this Saturday in Vancouver, runs down the coast with stops at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre next Thursday and ends at Bonnaroo on June 12th.

Gabrielle Aplin

21-year-old Gabrielle Aplin has already found success across the pond with her debut album English Rain which became certified Gold and peaked at #2 in the U.K. charts.  Her rendition of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's single "The Power of Love" launched to #1 on both the U.K. and Australian iTunes charts.

Now, Gabrielle Aplin, Britain's best-kept secret, is finally hitting U.S. shores with the release of her 6-song EP English Rain, making it her first U.S. debut.  In addition, Aplin  kicked off her US tour earlier this month selling out every single date.  Not bad for a musician who hadn't released an album stateside yet.

This Wednesday, Aplin makes her premiere LA performance at The Hotel Cafe to promote the release of her English Rain EP which includes "The Power of Love" and a beautiful interpretation of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" which you can watch below.

Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice's Creature Songs EP won't be released until next week but you can stream their new album in full right HERE on Soundcloud.

Led by front woman, Ellie Rowsell and consisting of Joel Amey, Joff Oddie and Theo Ellis, Wolf Alice reminds me of early 90s alternative, echoing the sugary sounds of Letters to Cleo, Belly with the moody, grungy melodies of Temple of the Dog.

Creature Songs drops May 26th.  Pre-order right HERE

Caleb and Georgia Nott of BROODS

Before 2013, all that I new about the New Zealand music scene was Kimbra and Flight of the Conchords.  Last year, New Zealand blew up in a big way with teen sensation Lorde ruling the charts with her Grammy-winning debut album Pure Heroine.

Now, the music insdustry are taking notice of another band from New Zealand - Broods, a brother/sister pop-duo hailing from Aukland, New Zealand.  Their etheral, dark and moody melodies that are layered on throughout their debut EP,  have sweeped music fans off their feet (myself included).  Often times reminding me of UK's own London Grammar, Broods also purposes simple, transparent arrangements that become powerful through its intimacy.  Add to that lead singer's Georgia Nott's hypnotic vocals and what you get are wind-swept echoes of  dark lullabys that echoes a looming thunder cloud; a calm before the storm if you will.

Consisting of siblings Georgia (vocals) and Caleb Nott (sonic landscaper), Broods's first single  "Bridges" got noticed by music blogs like Idolator and soon got picked up by MTV and iTunes made it their 'Single of the Week" in February.

Last Thursday, the Broods finished off their U.S. tour at The Observatory in Santa Ana.  Now, they'll return home to work on their full-length album which is expected to be released this August.

Just like is scary. Some people are too afraid to take that leap and see what happens. They'll end up spending their lives wondering "What if" instead of saying "At least I gave it a shot."  And it's that 'what if' feeling that will end up eating you up inside.

Rachel Taylor, previous front-woman of the popular indie-pop darlings He Is We, just announced the June 23rd release of her debut solo EP Come Alive via Republic Records.  And with the announcement, she also premiered the lyric video for her new single "Come Alive."

Set over circus rides like roller coasters, ferris wheels and swing rides, "Come Alive" is an anthem of living - living for life and living for love.  It's about taking those chances that scare you the most because that's when you feel the most alive.

Here it is finally. Lana del Rey's new video for "West Coast." It's off her upcoming album Ultraviolence which is expected to drop later this year.

"West Coast" by Lana Del Rey

Check out this new interpretation of Beastie Boys' 1987 song "Girls" by Las Vegas artist Sizzy Rocket.

Rocket puts a Lou Reed-esque moody beat to the song, turning a song about hooking up into  a feminist anthem while replacing lyrics that were, otherwise, negative to make it more empowering towards women.

DWNTWN's Jamie Leffler

There are certain bands that have that distinctive sound all their own.  Once you hear a song for the first time, you immediately know who sings it based on the sound and style.  DWNTWN is one of those bands.

Consisting of Jamie Leffler, Robert Cebeda and later adding Chris Sanchez and Dan Vanchieri,  this LA-based band has only been a band for about a year when the music industry started to notice.  A loyal fan base followed after hearing their first single "Transition," a sun-soaked, bubbly-pop tune that introduced them to the world in 2011.  And since then, everyone who has listened wanted to hear more.  Three years and two EPs later, DWNTWN has been keeping busy, touring the world and keeping themselves busy writing new material.
Last Monday, DWNTWN released their third EP via Jullian Records and celebrated at Bardot's School Night.

photos by picksysticks
Drawn by their synth-pop melodies and angelic vocals from Leffler, fans, who waited until 11:30 for DWNTWN to take the stage - most practically surrounding the stage at all sides; some a mere arms-length from Jamie and Robert.

They opened with their first single "Til Tuesday," blanketed by heavy, rich blue and red lights which heightened the enchanted atmosphere to go along with their dreamy melodies which gave way to Jamie's swaying and twirling as though she was dancing in field of magical fairy-dust.

Their songs, like "Stood Me Up" and "See My Eyes" radiate a feeling of ecstasy and when you see Jamie swaying and dancing to the beat, you can't help but join in and dance with her.  And this is probably why fans continue to pack venues in order to watch DWNTWN.  But it isn't just loyal fans singing their praises, People Magazine and USA Today has also praised their music along with music bloggers and taste-makers who have rallied behind this indie-pop band.

Their self-titled EP is out now. You can get your copy on iTunes HERE or on Amazon HERE

Wolf Alice

At first listen to Wolf Alice’s new song “Moaning Lisa Smile,” one would think it was a lost track from the 90s grunge era.  Of course, it’s not but Wolf Alice has been all the buzz  recently with their growling and smoky guitars that quickly reminds us of ‘those’ bands from Seattle.   Only this time, the weather is the same but the location is not.  Wolf Alice hails from London, the always raining and overcast town from across the pond.  It must be the  grey and dreary weather that brings out heavy, moody melodies like  this but Wolf Alice puts the dirty flannel into a refreshing spin cycle and what emerges  is something completely different and raw that makes us want to wear that flannel shirt again. They have a new EP called Creature Songs that drops later this month.

In a music industry that has been ruled by pop, country and alternative for so long, Wolf Alice has given us something raw and untouched, unlike the post-processed stuff we hear on the radio today.  Check out the video below taped live at Toe Rag Studios:

It's no question that the biggest name in music right now is Pharrell.  It seems like everything he touches turns to gold so I wouldn't be surprised that his latest collaboration with singer LIZ will turn her into the next big thing.

It's been a busy year for the LA-based singer; touring with Charli XCX and recently was hand-picked by Perez Hilton to perform at his annual "SXSW One Night In Austin" showcase. Now, she teamed up with Pharrell to record "That's My Man" for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 soundtrack.  Other than LIZ, Pharrell also collaborated with Alicia Keys on "It's On Again" as well as contributing his own single "Here" for the soundtrack.

LIZ, is a one-woman SWV and Destiny's Child, bringing the soul-pop, girl group sounds that dominated the 90s.  And with a voice like Xtina's, then what you have here is the whole package.  Her recently released EP Just Like You is all kinds of sugary, smooth treats - dance, electro and sultriness that is the perfect soundtrack to romance.

Listen to Pharrell produced "That's My Man" from the Spider-Man soundtrack below:

Sleeper Agent

Sleeper Agent has become my new obsession.  This six-piece band from Bowling Green, Kentucky has so much going on - in sound and attitude - It's a wonder how I could've missed their 2011 debut album Celbrasion.

After the release of Celebrasion in 2011, the band, consisting of Alex Kandel, Tony Smith, Justin Wilson, Lee Williams, Scott Gardner and Josh Martin, toured extensively, touring alongside Weezer, Cage the Elephant, Fun., Grouplove, Young The Giant, Ben Kweller, The Joy Formidable, Manchester Orchestra, Circa Survive, Company of Thieves, and more.  Their debut album was so lauded by music tastemakers they made the pages of Rolling Stone, SPIN, Los Angeles Times and Alternative Press while MTV awarded them their Freshman Award.

Earlier this month, they launched their first ever headlining tour in support of their second full-length album About Last Night which dropped on March 25th.
Sleeper Agent
Sleeper Agent

Last Saturday, two days before completing their first headlining tour, Sleeper Agent performed at The Satellite, playing an 18-song set that included singles off their debut album and their latest About Last Night.  They sprinted out of the gates with "Be Brave" off their new album and didn't let up for the next hour and a half.

With sixties pop-beats that channel the Liverpool-esque era, Sleeper Agent, who also captures the height of the MTV, pop-80s vibe that defined a music generation has forged a sound all their own. Add to that lead singer Alex Kandel's powerful vocals that echoes Heart's Wilson sisters with the smooth control of Siouxsie Sioux and you get a potpourri of music styles that'll please every music lover out there.

Touring extensively since the release of their debut album in 2011, you can tell Sleeper Agent are already veterans of the road, seamlessly problem-solving on stage when bassist Lee Williams' foot rig lost power during the middle of their set.  Instead of stopping until the problem was fixed, Alex and guitarist Tony Smith launched into beautiful acoustic version of "Lorena."  Towards the end of the song, Williams flawlessly joined in to end the song in a resounding finish.

Sleeper Agent, focusing mostly on their new material, did play songs from Celebrasion including "Force a Smile," "Love Blood," "Good Job"  and their closing song "Be My Monster."  But it was their newer songs like "Waves," "Take It Off" and "Good Job" that brought the loudest cheers from the packed house.

In July, for also for the very first time, Sleeper Agent will be playing at this year's Vans Warped Tour.  Exciting!

Singer Elliphant is the latest musical sensation to come out of the Swedish pop scene.  Influenced by London's urban music environment, Elliphant (aka: Ellinor Olovsdotter) fused those urban sounds with her dance/ dubsteb background to create a sound all her own. And it's those imaginative and catchy melodies in songs like "Ciant Hear It" that  has brought the attention from Diplo, Dr. Luke and even Skrillex who all, have since worked and written songs together. Her tunes like her live shows are filled with attitude and  struts in your face unabashadly.

Bardot's popular "School Night" showcases on Monday nights has become one of LA's best parties in town, booking the most buzzed about artists in the industry.  And this past  Monday, Elliphant stormed Bardot to shocase her new material from her new EP Look Like You Love It.
