Debbie Harry of Blondie

Ahead of the release of their 40th anniversary double-disk album, Blondie has unveiled their new video for their single "Sugar On The Side" on Hunger TV.

Shot in monochrome and mixing kaleidoscope and geometric visuals, ‘Sugar On The Side’ sees Harry embody two contrasting looks and personas. The track features Caribbean collective Systema Solar.

‘Sugar On The Side’ is a track from their new collection of songs entitled Ghosts of Download, part of the band’s 40th Anniversary double-disc package, Blondie 4(0) Ever, which also includes an album entitled Deluxe Redux: Greatest Hits featuring brand new studio recordings of the band’s biggest songs which will drop May 13th.

VIRAL VIDEO "FIRST KISS" FEATURES SOKO'S SINGLE "WE Might Be Dead by Tomorrow"

SOKO
Soko performs at Make Music Pasadena 2012.
Soko, (aka:  Stephanie Sokoliski) who is currently in the studio recording her follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2012 debut album I Thought I Was An Alien,  looks to continue her success with her second full-length album, My Dreams Dictate My Reality

Recently, her single "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow," off her debut album, has found a resurgence after it was featured in the 3 minute viral video "First Kiss" which features twenty strangers kissing for the first time.  The single has since debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart and No. 9 on the Hot 100 last month.  Check out the official video for "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" below along with the short video "First Kiss."

First Kiss featuring the song "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" by Soko.

Last year, as she was touring in support of her debut album, when we saw her at the Jubilee Music and Arts Festival we wrote "...She has that stabbed innocence feeling, tormented and twisted with misunderstood emotions. A wounded animal singing to survive as she watches people pass by without slowing their stride. Her frustration turning into darkness behind the twinkle in her eyes.... She has been hurt, and had enough of taking things kindly. Her retaliation is in her release as SoKo.  Erratic anger turned into raging music of truth."

A self-taught talent, Soko began writing songs at age 20, teaching herself guitar after seeing a friend play music and realizing she wanted and could do that, too. After moving to Paris, radio stations in Denmark, Belgium and Australia started spinning her music, and soon she was playing gigs with Daniel Johnston, M.I.A., Babyshambles, and Azure Ray, among others. In addition to her songwriting and acting, she is also known for directing her own boldly spirited DIY music videos and creating her own artwork.

HALEY PHARO @ THE HOTEL CAFE

Haley Pharo

At 25 years old, singer-songwriter Haley Pharo has already sang with some of the biggest names in music today - Demi Lovato, Ryan Cabrera and Will.i.Am.  She even sang back up vocals of Michael Jackson.  Now, after collaborating with some of the biggest names in the music industry, Pharo is releasing her debut album.

With her new record, released on Haywire Records and produced and mixed by multi-Grammy Award winning Andrew Dawson (Kanye West, John Legend, Beyonce), Pharo is ready to step out of the shadows and live the life she dreamed for herself  when she was seven years old.

Haley Pharo

photos by picksysticks
Last week, Pharo performed at The Hotel Cafe, celebrating  the release of her self-titled debut album. This isn't your typical bubblegum-pop.  She has some of the most sought after producers in the industry backing her.  With  King Logan (Timbaland) and David Palmer (ABC, The The, Rod Stewart)  lending their talents, it's obvious that Haley is swinging for the fences on her debut.

From the bouncy, Kelly Clarkson-esque "Waiting On You" to her heartfelt ballad "Your Darling," her songs tells a story that doesn't sound like she's pandering to us. You can tell she's lived every single note she sings  - her vocal arsenal seemlesly going from pain and heartbreak ("Prisoner" and "Missing") to lust and conficence ("Con Artist" and "Identity") in a pop beat which is why Pharo's debut is so relatable.

Check out her first single "Con Artist" below.

ZZ WARD'S "LAST LOVE SONG" FEATURED IN NEW PRETTY LITTLE LIARS PROMO

ZZ Ward

ZZ Ward's debut album "Til the Casket Drops" was released in 2012.  Two years later, ZZ Ward is still reaping the rewards and still releasing new videos from that great album.  Today, Billboard premiered her new video for "Last Love Song," one of my favorite tracks.  The video, shot in beautiful black and white was filmed in Los Angeles and San Francisco and highlights Ward's raw and vulnerable breakup ballad.

Billboard reports that the "Last Love Song" will be featured in the new commercial for ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" which returns to TV on June 10th.

This year is going to be a busy year for ZZ Ward. Just coming off playing at Coachella, ZZ Ward's next show will be supporting Eric Clapton next week and then she's off performing a string of music festivals including Bonnaroo and Summerfest.

Check out both video versions of "Last Love Song." One is the special "Pretty Little Liars" version and the other is the official music video.

CANADIAN ALT-ROCKERS ALVVAYS SIGNS TO POLYVINYL RECORDS, PREMIERES SONG

ALVVAYS

So when I went to SXSW this year, one of the bands I had to catch were Canadian alt-rockers Alvvays.   Their reverb-flooding melodies makes you feel like you’re sunbathing in their warmth of alt-punk guitars and slacker-esque harmonies.  And there’s something about lead singer’s Molly Rankin’s bouncy vocals that's sooting to your soul.

Today, Alvvays announced that they signed with Polyvinyl Records with their debut album scheduled to drop later this year. And to celebrate they premiered their single "Archie, Marry Me."   Listen to the song below.

"IT DON'T COME EASY" OFFICIAL VIDEO FROM CARLY RITTER

Carly Ritter
 photo via facebook.com/carlyrittermusic
When Carly Ritter hits the flowy chorus, singing "It don't come easy my love," I feel like I've been transported to the dawn of rock and roll - 50s to be exact, echoing the innocence and sun-kissed melodies of The Teen Queens, The Bobbettes and The Shirelles.  In Ritter's new video for "It Don't Come Easy," premiering on PopMatters today, she runs her infectious melody through an Instagrammed-esque filter of time-honored folk pastels awash with gentle streams of pop.  But no matter how you spell it, "It Don't Come Easy" is refreshing and vintage all at once.

Recently releasing her debut album, Carly just completed a North American Tour earlier this month and plans on jetting out again in May touring with Nathaniel Rateliff where she'll hit Los Angeles' The Echo on May 22nd. Can't wait!

LILY ALLEN PROCLAIMS HERSELF "SHEEZUS"

Lily Allen

In Lily Allen's latest song, released today, she proclaims to the world that she's back and is still in the game, singing proudly and reminding the world that she blazed the trail that opened doors for such artists as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Lorde and now she wants her crown back singing...
"I am born again, now run along and tell all of your friends to come and join us. Give yourselves to me, I am your leader. Let me be Sheezus."
Sheezus, her third studio album, will drop May 6th via Parlophone Records and has since released three singles.

Last November, Lily Allen released her first single in four years, coming out of  a self-retirement with the release of "Hard Out There" in which she pays homage to Miley Cyrus' twerking.  "L8 CMMR" was the next single which was featured on HBO's "Girls: Volume 2" soundtrack and "Air Balloon" only solidified why Allen should still be mentioned in the same sentences as Britney and Katy Perry.

Check out "Sheezus" below.

AVRIL LAVIGNE PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR 'HELLO KITTY'

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne tries her hand at dub-steppy/pop with her latest video for her single "Hello Kitty."  With hard, edgy guitars and sugary, techno beats, Avril's bold new direction kinda works and I like it.  This song is a far cry from her earlier chorus-driven, pop-rock anthems that rocketed her to fame at 17 when she released her debut album Let Go.  She's now 29  and all grown up.  And let's not overlook her Skrillex-esque head shave. The song if from her self-titled fifth studio album that saw her collaborating with her husband Chad Kroeger, L.A. Reid and Marilyn Manson.

London Grammar's new video for "Sights" is a beautifully shot video, capturing the trio's emotional feel of seeing them live. "Sights" is their new single off their debut album If You Wait. Moody lights and soaring melodies that highlights Hannah Reid's operatic vocals.  Watch the long tracking shot start out on close ups of each member like we're watching a closed, intimate rehearsal.  It isn't until the camera pans out when we see the spell-bounded crowd watching London Grammar at a concert.

Kiesza
Kiesza photo via  www.facebook.com/Kiesza
Kiesza, the Canadian pop-singer, has topped the UK singles chart with "Hideaway," a retro, disco inspired dance song.  The video is shot in one long four and a half minute take on the streets of Brooklyn highlights how infectious Kiesza's debut single can be.   "Hideaway" has rocketed up the charts since its initial release in February and finds the classically trained ballerina and former code breaker for the Royal Canadian Navy cementing her single as one of UK's fastest selling songs of 2014.

SKY FERREIRA REVEALS BANDAGED-UP LEG IN NEW VIDEO

Sky Ferreira

In February, Sky Ferreira had to pull out of supporting Miley Cyrus's Bangerz tour after falling off stage during her performance.  After completing her set, she was rushed to the hospital where she received  60 stitches.  Once she heals up, she's expected to rejoin the Bangerz tour.

Today, she released her new video and you can defintely see the bandage still covering her leg but the good news is that she looks completely healed from the injury, dancing and kicking ass in the new video for "I Blame Myself" which is off her debut album "Night Time, My Time."

Check it out below. If the link doesn't work, you can click HERE to watch it on Ssense.com.

MOONPOOLS AND CATERPILLARS TAKE THE PHILIPINES

Photo via Instagram @moonpoolsandcaterpillars
Last night Moonpools and Caterpillars played their first show in the Philipines in almost 20 years.  The year was 1996 when the band last performed there; their critically acclaimed debut album Lucky Dumpling was just released a year earlier.  Since then Moonpools and Caterpillars has amassed a large and loyal following to this day and it's not hard to see why.

In 2013, Moonpools and Caterpillars, consisting of Kimi Ward Encarnacion, Jay Jay Encarnacion, Tim De Palma and Gugut Salazar, reunited and performed to a sold out crowd for the first time in 15 years.  Then this past April, they reunited again at The Whiskey A Go Go but this time it was to help disaster relief efforts in the Philippines which was devastated by Typhoon Haiyan which hit the islands back in November. The show raised exactly $21,336.75   with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the Philippine disaster relief.

When news broke that the band would return to the Philipines, tickets immediately sold out which prompted the addition of two more shows at Amber Ultra Lounge.

“Usually after a really good show, you can say that you killed. But last night, I think you could say that the audience killed. Manila, you were a force. It was such an honor to play in front of you last night,” Moonpools and Caterpillars immediately posted on their Facebook page. “We've never seen anything like it. What a blast from start to finish!!!”

Check out their closing song "Heaven" from last night's show at the Amber Ultra Lounge.

NEW VIDEO: FOXES' "HOLD ONTO HEAVEN"

Foxes' new album 'Glorious'
Glorious, Foxes' new album drops in May.
We just love Foxes (aka: Louisa Rose Allen), the Brit that gave us some of our favorite songs in the past year - "Youth," "White Coats" and the Zedd collaboration "Clarity."

This week she released a new music video for "Hold onto Heaven," off her new album Glorious which drops this May.  It's the third single released off this album; the first being "Youth" and the second was "Let Go For Tonight."

But this single is truly a sad song, delving into how hard it is to let go after  heartbreak and betrayal but still hanging onto the good times of the past.  In the video, Foxes shows her world turned upside down as she tries to make sense of situation as she sings, "I hate what you've done, what you've made me become, no sleep, face the night...I'm holding onto heaven."

HUNGER GAMES' JENA MALONE STRIPS DOWN FOR NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Jena Malone of The Shoe
The Shoe

She played the confident and sensual tribute, Johanna Mason, in Hunger Games: Catching Fire who wasn't shy about about walking around naked.  Looks like the character isn't that much of a stretch for Jena Malone who strips down for her new video for "Dead Rabbit Hopes," her new song from her band The Shoe.  In the video, Jena strips down, covered by well placed flowers that's layered with breezy, soft and delicate melodies.  It's off her new album I'm Okay, a full-length, that drops June 3rd via Community Music and There Was an Old Woman Records.  Check out the video below which was directed by Alia Penenr.

Did you file your taxes yet?  The deadline to file is April 15th.  If you haven't yet, Dia Frampton is reminding you how fun it is to get your tax returns in this new music video from H&R Block's Billion Back Records.  The song is called "Money Back" and the song, along with Dia's beautiful voice, reminds me of opening scenes of classic Disney musicals along the lines of Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid and, more recently, Frozen.

Dia just announced she'll be heading out on a U.S. tour with rocker-violinist Lindsey Stirling that  begins in May and runs through June.
