NONONO will perform at this year's South by Southwest this March.
Swedish trio NONONO has just released a new song via Soundcloud and it's yet another example of why Scandanavian bands have some secret magical well of infectious and catchy tunes to pull from.

The sugary melodies flows in this new single called "Hungry Eyes."  Polished in shiny keys and crystal clear vocals by Stina Wappling, NONONO, is proving why their success after their breakout hit "Pumpin Blood" isn't a fluke possibly singing to their critics  "We got HUNGRY EYES /  We won't stop the fight /  We won't back down / We won't crash land / I Won't leave in defeat this time around."

Expect to catch them this March when they perform at this years' SXSW held between March 11-March 16.

Betty Who
Betty Who (Lauren Fuller, Jessica Anne Newham & Jemila Dunham) performs her first ever Los Angeles show at The Echo.

Jessica Anne Newham, better known as Betty Who, has been the talk of the music scene since she released her debut EP The Movement last year.  And because of that EP, she's made a lot of  those 'artists to watch in 2014' lists. Her name just kept popping up everywhere - blogs (Idolator) , websites (MTV), magazines (Elle, New York Magazine) a couple getting engaged on YouTube, etc... In fact, one of those lists actually came from the music taste maker magazine Time who listed Betty Who as one of the "Acts to Watch in 2014."   Aside from the YouTube engagement video that went viral, I hadn't heard any of her other songs until last week.

The Australian native who studied on the east coast, played her first ever gig in Los Angeles, selling out The Echo in Silverlake. You couldn't take your eyes off her as she echoed the pop-explosion sounds of the 80s with sparklets of R&B. Her songs, like herself was like watching a fireworks display and ooh-ing and ahhh-ing with each bursts of colorful melodies, watching the sparks shoot out every which way, marveling at trail of light fading softly away.

Performing every song off her smash hit EP The Movement (there's only four songs), Betty Who treated the packed crowd with some new tunes like the tender, romantic-pop ballad "Alone Again" and the sure to be her next hit song "Giving Me Away."   But one of the highlights of the night was when she invited actors Glee's Kevin McHale and Telly Kousakis up onstage as backup dancers during her rendition of The Spice Girls' "Say You'll Be There."   She ended the night with "Somebody to Love" to a dancing crowd that definitely didn't want the night to end.  Betty Who knows how to put on a show or a party for that matter.

This week, Betty Who just announced a new string of North American tour dates beginning March 22nd in Philadelphia and then making her way through Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and finishing off in New York.  She also is scheduled to perform at this years' SXSW in early March.

The Echo setlist (Jan. 21st): You're In Love / Alone Again / Heartbreak Dream / Right Here / Giving Me Away / Lovin' Start / All of You / Say You'll be There / High Society Encore: Somebody Loves You

Birdy's song is featured on both "Labor Day" and "Winter's Tale" trailers
As you know, I'm obsessed with Birdy and her music, having her songs on repeat on my iPod at home and in my car.  It seems like I hear her everywhere now, thinking it has become part of my subconscious, seeping out of my pores.  So when I heard a faint melody on my television one night while doing chores, I'd imagine I was once again humming in my mind one of Birdy's songs.  But this time, the melody was too focused to be part of my imagination.  That's when I turned to the television and saw the trailer for the Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin film "Labor Day." And it featured none other that Birdy's "Wings" off her sophomore album Fire Within. Just for including that song alone will make me watch the flick when it hits theater's January 31st..

"Wings" is becoming a favorite song for movie studios to use in their movie trailers.  Recently, it was also featured on the trailer for "Winter's Tale" starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly.

2014 is shaping up to be a breakout year for Birdy. Her second studio album Fire Within gets its U.S. release sometime this year.   She recently got nominated for Best British Female Solo Artist at The BRIT Awards which takes place February 19th at London's O2 Arena and it was recently announced that she will be touring with Christina Perri on her North American tour starting this April.

 Check out both trailers below.

CHVRCHES play Coachella this April.
Scottish trio CHVRCHES, today, released a new song which will be featured on the Motion Picture Soundtrack for Vampire Academy.  The song is called  "Bela Lugosi’s Dead" by Bauhaus and it apparently was released way back in 1979.  According to the music site, the song is considered the first gothic rock song ever released.  Of course, the song references one of the, if not, the most famous vampire star of all time - Bela Lugosi who died in 1956.  Vampire Academy will be released on February 7th.

Chvrches, known for the electro-pop melodies, put their own special touches for this version and are currently on their European tour.  They're scheduled to perform at this years' Coachella on April 12th and 19th.

Birdy aka: Jasmine van den Bogaerde
Birdy performing at Hollywood Forever Masonic Lodge.

At  ten after 8 pm, the buzz in the crowd grew louder and louder in Hollywood Forever Cemetery's  Masonic Lodge. It was packed with people, wall to wall; the upper mezz saved for special VIP and friends. One could quickly tell this was no ordinary concert. Four hours earlier, a handful of people already started to line up where only a few feet away lay headstones of the long lost.

Tonight was special. It was Birdy's first Los Angeles show since 2012 when she broke onto the scene as a 15 year-old with the release of her first single - a cover version of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love." That single shot up the charts in the U.K.  and the debut album it belonged to shot straight to #1 in Australia, Belgium, France and the Netherlands.

Birdy aka: Jasmine van den Bogaerde

At 8:11, like someone turning off a light switch, the crowd quieted as Birdy, real name Jasmine van den Bogaerde, took the stage, a lone spot light centering on her, as she sat on her baby grand piano.

Even though Birdy, now 17,  is widely successful overseas, U.S. fans are now getting a chance to see and hear her perform live (most for the very first time) with a string of American dates to start the new year in what seems to be a warm up to her bigger North American Tour with Christina Perri starting this April.

But this night, Birdy was stripped down, playing an intimate set at Hollywood Forever's Masonic Lodge, a favorite venue for artists wanting to connect closely with the audience.  From her the very first keys she played on her piano Birdy captivated the audience for her entire 9-song, 40-minute set that included songs from her debut album as well as her newest Fire Within.

Known for her understated yet powerful arrangements of songs, Birdy started off the night performing songs off her critically acclaimed debut album with "Shelter," "Young Blood" and "People Help The People," all covers that highlight her talents of breaking down songs and building them back up to a more vulnerable and softer versions of the original.

Birdy aka: Jasmine van den Bogaerde
Birdy aka: Jasmine van den Bogaerde's North American tour with Christina Perri begins in April.
photos by picksysticks
Although her fragile arrangements of popular songs was what got her noticed, Birdy showcased her talent for writing original songs that are delicate and, in a sense, makes you feel like watching her bare her soul to the entire crowd. Themes of heartbreak and overcoming obstacles are layered throughout Fire Within.  In the elegant "Strange Birds," when she sings "Now I want to fly into your world. I want to be heard. My wounded wings still beating. You've always loved the stranger insider," Birdy reveals her maturity and identity as a singer/songwriter.

In "Words as Weapons" Birdy, for the first time, took center stage, leaving the comforts of her piano and exchanges it with a guitar, fearlessly showing her emotionally thick skin singing "I feel your knife as it goes right in.  Cut to my core but I'm not bleeding."

"Wings" by Birdy

And in her most euphoric song of the night, backed by a lively band that colored the lodge with hearty melodies,  Birdy sang "Light Me Up," an uplifting song about  finding one's own way through the darkness before ending the night with her first single off her new album "Wings" about reminiscing about the good times in your past and wishing to relive them again.  "Wings" has been featured on movie trailers for "Winter's Tale" starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly and for the Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin film "Labor Day."

Jezabels performs at The Viper Room in 2011.
The Sydney-based band, consisting of Haley Mary (vocals), Heather Shannon (keys), Samuel Lockwood (Guitar) and Nik Kaloper (drums), have been making noise down under since the release of their first EP The Man Is Dead in 2009. They've played to sold-out shows all over the world.   They kept busy for the most part of 2013, touring  with The Posies and Depeche Mode while completing the final touches on their new album.

Today, The Jezabels released their second single "Look of Love" from their upcoming album The Brink which gets its release date here in the U.S. on Feb. 18th via Dine Alone Records.  The song is about what we imagine love to be like when, in reality, it sometimes doesn't live up to our expectations.

“Essentially, it’s story is that of ‘Up-Town Girl’, but sung from the perspective the girl, who acted ‘too good’ for the boy who loved her, afraid to become stigmatized by her own desire. Years later, when nothing has matched up to the young love she pushed away, the pre-tense crumbles into delusion. Though the song is sung in present tense, about wanting to give into this love right then and there, the opportunity she speaks of is dead, and all that is left is an unhealthy re-living of the past, and a desire for a love that’s gone.”

"Look of Love" official video by The Jezabels

Known for their  dreamy pop-vocals layered on top of soaring arrangements, The Jezabels' songs, with Lockwood and Laloper's lead, are peppered with pop-alternative melodies and Shannon's sonic landscaping which, when textured together, makes you feel good to be alive, like you're standing on the edge of a cliff, balancing inches from certain weightlessness.

A month after the U.S. release of The Brink, The Jezabels will embark on their North American tour on March this March on a 15-city tour that will see them starting off at Los Angeles' El Rey Theater, then head to Canada and finally ending its tour with stops in Boston, New York and Washington DC in April.

Last month, We Are The In Crowd released their new video for "The Best Thing (That Never Happened)," a first glimpse of what to expect from their upcoming album Weird Kids which drops February 18th via Hopeless Records.

Today, the Poughkeepsie band has released a new song called "Long Live the Kids," a rock ballad sure to be instant athem for young kids across America.

"Growing up in a small town, it was always difficult to see opportunity. But I had to look past it and stay determined." singer Tay Jardine says about the song. " 'Long Live The Kids' really represents staying true to yourself and holding on to your dreams, even when your surroundings doubt you. Capture that feeling of being a kid- when you were braver than ever and inspired by a tall tree to climb."

And judging by the first two songs released in the past couple of months, it's no wonder why FUSE has named Weird Kids one of their "Most Anticipated Albums" of 2014  while MTV Buzzworthy has dubbed front-woman Tay Jardine as one of the "15 Fresh Females Who Will Rule Pop in 2014."

Album and bundle pre-orders are now available via Hopeless here: Fans can also pre-order the album through Best Buy to receive two exclusive bonus tracks here: For tickets and more information about We Are The In Crowd's upcoming US + UK Tours:

Sirah performs at Silverlake's The Satellite.
photos by picksysticks
With soulful beats and infectious melodies, Sirah stormed into The Satellite last Monday spitting out the rhymes and tunes that got her noticed by Atlantic Records. Singing on a couple of Skrillex's songs sort of helped too (for which she won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording w/Skrillex) but it was the release of her C.U.L.T. mixtape that started the buzz on this fiesty bad girl singer.

This night she showcased her diverse tracks from last year's release of her much anticipated EP Inhale, ranging from r&b, pop and electronic.

DWNTWN @ The Satellite (January Residency)

Imagine the sparkly lights of downtown but with the dirt roads of the wild west.  That would best describe the sounds of DWNTWN.
Dirty-electro-pop with melodies like sparkly-shiny spurs and glimmering six-shooters balanced with a rough, gritty attitude, this LA-based band reminds me of Mumford and Suns playing in sequence wardrobe.  Of course, the disco ball hanging atop the ceiling at The Satellite probably added to the effect.

Jamie Leffler of DWNTWNJamie Leffler of DWNTWN

This was all part of DWNTN's January residency at The Satellite in Silver Lake.  Made up of Jamie Leffler, Robert Cepeda and Jerrod Bettis, DWNTWN performed songs off their two EPs The Red Room and Cowboys under a dreamlike, lush and saturated atmosphere that saw Jamie twirl and sway in her soft, embroidered gown.

Their January residency continues this Monday (and every Monday this January)  at The Satellite.  Shows are free so you have no excuse not to go!

Since rays of sunshine can't give hugs, Portland's The Wild Ones come pretty close with their warm and sunny melodies.  Sort of like electro-pop on decaf, you can't help but feel comforted and safe when you hear lead singer's Danielle Sullivan's soft and tranquil vocals - especially on songs like "Golden Twin" and "From Nothing."    Wild Ones performed Wednesday at The Bootleg Theater playing from their new album Keep It Safe which dropped last year.  This night's set even included a jazzy version of Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home."

If you missed them, Wild Ones play a free show at Bardots School Night this Monday.

So far, every single song Chloe Howl has released it's become an instant favorite. Her songs make me want to dance like no one's watching.  Three songs she previously released, "Rumors," "No Strings" and "Paper Heart," became instant hits, making Howl's upcoming album one of the most anicipated releases of 2014.

Today, Stereogum released a demo version of her newest song "This Song's Not About You."  Listen to the song on Stereogum right HERE.

On top of that, the recently BRIT Award nominee and 18 year-old will be opening up for Ellie Goulding on her European Tour starting up at the end of the month.

The Material front-woman Colleen D'Agostino unleashes another dimension to her arsenal with an electro-pop solo project called With Beating Hearts.  Collaborating with Blake Harnage of Versa (formerly known as VersaEmerge), Colleen's weathered and powerful vocals is front and center on her new EP The Wolves, an 80s inspired/electro project.

"I have been working away at my solo project and 'The Wolves' EP for the past year and I am so excited to finally share it with everyone. I think I was itching to break away from the rock world for awhile and it felt good to tap into the electronic pop side of myself,"  D'Agostino says.  "I think these tracks really captured the 80s child in me."

The Wolves drops February 4th.

We can all admit that we all have that appetite to satisfy our basic animalistic desires for passionate love-making every once in awhile.  In the vid for "Desire" Meg Myers is stunningly beautiful, her lust turns into a ravenous peak as she sings: " Baby, I wanna fuck you /  I WANNA FEEL YOU IN MY BONES / Boy, I'm gonna love YOU / I'M GONNA TEAR INTO YOUR SOUL."

Last month, Charli XCX helped SPIN celebrate the Year in Music by performing at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg.  And it certainly was a breakout year for Charli with SPIN Magazine naming her single "You (Ha Ha Ha)" as one of the 50 Best Songs of 2013 and her album True Romance was listed #5 on their Top 20 Pop Albums of 2013.

In September, she released her new video for "SuperLove," a bouncy, pixie-dust of a song set in a Japanese disco complete with dancing robots and sugary-pop lights blinking to the infectious beat which is the first single off of her sophomore album which she's currently recording. That album isn't expected to be released until later this year.  Watch below as Charli performs "Grins",  one of my favorite albums from True Romance.

Check out this new video from Bjork for the single "Declare Indepedence." The eclectic video shows Bjork in a steam-punk world, with one entity (Government) above her streaming yarns of string (messages) to the masses but Bjork, seemingly hijacks the message and filters her ideas of indepedence to the people:

Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!
Declare independence!
Don't let them do that to you!

Declare Independence was released back in 2008 which is from her album Volta.   Initially, according to wiki, the single was an instrumental in which Bjork added vocals on top of it later on.  The lyrics are dedicated to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, islands currently ruled by Denmark, as Björk's home country of Iceland had been.

Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Christina Perri is probably best known among the masses from her song "A Thousand Years" which was featured on The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn but the song that launched her career was her break-up anthm "Jar of Hearts" which sold a whopping 6 million copies.

Yesterday, she released her newest single "Human" off her upcoming album Head or Heart which drops March 11th which includes a duet with Ed Sheeran. And in April, Perri begins her two-month North American tour which starts in Denver, Colorado on April 4th and plays The Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 17th.

"Human" by Christina Perri

Christina Perri – “Human” Lyrics

I can hold my breath
I can bite my tongue
I could stay awake for days if thats what you want
be your number one

I can fake a smile
I can force a laugh
I can dance and play the part
if thats what you ask
give you all I am

I can do it
I can do it
I can do it

But I’m only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I’m only human and I crash and I break down
your words in my head
knives in my heart
you build me up and then I fall apart
cause I’m only human

I can turn it on
be a good machine
I can hold the weight of worlds if that’s what you need
be your everything

I can do it
I can do it
I’ll get through it

But I’m only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I’m only human and I crash and I break down
your words in my head
knives in my heart
you build me up and then I fall apart
cause I’m only human

I’m only human
I’m only human
just a little human

I can take so much
till I’ve had enough

‘Cause I’m only human
And I bleed when I fall down
I’m only human and I crash and I break down
your words in my head
knives in my heart
you build me up and then I fall apart
cause I’m only human

Yeah, I're probably tired of me talking about this band but Moonpools and Caterpillars are one of my favorite bands ever.  Seriously, if you haven't listened to their 1995 debut album Lucky Dumpling, then I suggest you give it a hear and hopefully you'll love them as much as I do.

Anyways, after a long six months, Moonpools and Caterpillars have reunited once again for another special cause.  This time, it was to help disaster relief efforts in the Philippines which was devasted by Typhoon Haiyan which hit the islands back in November. The show raised exactly $21,336.75  with a secret sponsor matching all ticket sales with 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to the Philippine disaster relief.

Back in July, the original members consisting of Kimi Ward Encarnacion, Jay Jay Encarnacion, Tim De Palma and Gugut Salazar performed together for the first time in 15 years for Ethiopia Health Aid, a charity show that raised over $25,000; money used to ship donated ambulances and bring medical supplies as well as educational resources to villages in Ethiopia.

One listen to Emily Kinney's voice pulls you in like a secret love potion that draws you into her magical world of whimsical melodies, quircky lyrics but above all, truthful and vulnerable songs that make you feel like she wrote these songs especially for you.  On her second EP Expired Love, released in October, Kinney established her musical identity, firmly planting herself as a talented indie-pop singer/songwriter.

Kinney starts off the new year, with what's sure to be an intimate performance, at The Hotel Cafe on January 15th.  Get your tickets right HERE.

Los Angeles female rock trio Diamonds Under Fire  premiered a new music video for "Everything Fades To Red (Kidforce Edit)."  The track is the first single off of their recently released EP Hearts on Hiatus. "Hearts on Hiatus" is a holiday gift for fans until the full-length is released in 2014.

Diamonds Under Fire is the heart and soul of singer, songwriter and guitarist Vanessa Silberman and is also made up of drummer Jessica Goodwin (Big Black Delta) and bassist Melinda Holm.  Since they formed the band in 2012, they've  shared the stage with fellow female rockers Uh Huh Her, Dead Sara, Meg Myers and many others. The band spent most of 2013 on the road and in the studio perfecting their next full-length record, set for release in 2014.
