NONONO @ The Echo

NONONO continues Sweden's knack of breeding bands that write infectious, mid-tempo songs that brings out your inner child and makes you remember what it was like when life was carefree and everything around you looked shiny and brand new.

Stina Wappling of NONONOStina Wappling of NONONO

NONONO are that shiny brand new toy that everyone in the music biz seems to want for Christmas. From CMJ to Perez Hilton, this Swedish trio is the talk of the town and with their upcoing American television debut appearance on Jimmy Kimmel scheduled this Wednesday, NONONO is sure to be on everybody's radar by week's end.  Blame it on their breakthrough single "Pumpin Blood," which spread like wild fire across music blogs along with getting heavy airplay on mainstream and college radio.

Riding high off their critically acclaimed EP, NONONO made their first ever headling gig at The Echo.  Donning a glittery mini-dress and sneakers,  lead singer Stina Wappling shined onstage, awash in vibrant red and blue stage lights backed by producers Astma and Rocwell.

They sang songs off their debut EP, comprised of a mixture of electropop  that balances between sparkling and moody melodies.  That didn't stop the crowd from dancing during their entire set during hits like "Jungle" and "Fire Without a Flame."  And with only a handful of songs to perform (4 in total on their EP)  Stina joked, during their last song that they needed to write more songs so they could come back for an encore.

Echosmith (Sydney and Noah) perform at The Roxy.

Echosmith's ages range from 14 to 20 but they play like veterans of the stage which isn't surprising once you've learned they've lived and breathed music from an early age.  And last Tuesday at The Roxy, supporting Tonight Alive, they certainly played like the stage was their second home rousing the crowd with the opening "Let's Love" and then weaving into their hit single "Come Together" while Sydney busts out the twirling pastel parasol during "Talking Dreams" in what's become a welcomed staple for the song.

With confident stage presence, Jamie and Sydney led sing-alongs to their teen anthem "Cool Kids" while the crowds surged into a lively clapfest to their closing song "Nothing's Wrong."

For those not familiar with Echosmith, they're a group of siblings who grew up in Los Angeles and, unlike most teen pop bands whose sounds embraces sugary, bubblegum pop, Echosmith, comprised of Sydney, Jamie, Noah and Graham, sound more mature, blending a sophisticated sound that borrows from Coldplay, U2, Mumford and Sons and The Smiths.

CHVRCHES @ The Wiltern

Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches

Chvrches perform at the sold out Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles.

photos by picksysticks

It was a warm  night at The Wiltern where Chvrches, on night two of their 10-city  tour performed to a sold out crowd of 2,000 last Monday.

Halfway into Chvrches set, Martin Doherty took center stage, trading off vocal duties with Lauren Mayberry, and thanked the crowd and our warm southern California weather for allowing him to walk outside in short sleeves in the middle winter. He then smoothly transitioned to sing  "Under the Tide" in which he danced front and center in front of the packed house.

Lauren Mayberry of ChvrchesComing from Glasgow, Scotland where temperatures, this day, dipped below 40 degrees, this trio, it would seem, purposely planned this tour to start in sunny California - being all warm and all.

It's been a busy year for the Scottish trio who have been touring the U.S. off and on since March in support of their breakthrough hit debut album The Bones of What You Believe.  But it was their singles "Lies" and "Mother We Share," released last year that began to convert the masses.

Based on those two songs alone and subsequent debut EP, they went on tour, selling out venues across the U.S.  Their Los Angeles and San Francisco dates sold out so quickly, they had to move the concert to much bigger venues to accommodate the demand.  Now, their second time around is no different. The only thing different is that, now, they have a full-length album to tour behind.

Chvrches set included all of their songs but one from their debut album and they finally got to showcase their moody tunes - equal parts dark and shiny - in a much grander environment with a slick light show polished with glittery-retro dance melodies.

Bathed in saturated greens, reds, blues and oranges, Chvrches' took the stage and opened up to a metronic, beat-driven intro of "We Sink" with lights pulsating and laser cutting the ambient fog onstage.  As a backdrop, three sharp-angled "V's" beset with acid-drop sparkling lights that burned like a beacon, often times twinkling and even throbbing to the Chvrches electro-pop beats.  The "V", also used in their name CHVRCHES, aside from the backdrop also dawned Iain Cook and Martin Doherty's DJ stands. Fans danced from above on the mezzanine, in what looked like standing room only looking down at the backdrop which was positioned like a target, with lead singer Lauren Mayberry bulls-eye-centered right down the middle.

They kept it going fast and punch-drunk with "Gun" and "Lungs" before they slowed it down with the free-floating, romantic melodies of "Now Is Not the Time," that included sweet, sing-along harmonies.

Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches

Chvrches' strengths lies in that their songs, when performed live, translate well onstage, sounding exactly like their recorded tracks on their album, especially with songs like "Science and Visions," "Lungs" and "Recover" which are blanketed by layers of melodic beats and sugary-sweet synths.  But it's the gem of Lauren's soaring vocals that is the highlight of Chvrches.  It's more striking when she's accompanied by minimalistic arrangements like "Tether" and  "By The Throat," their closest songs they have to a ballad.

Of course, as expected, the highlight of the night was during the end of their set when they performed "Mother We Share"  that got everyone on their feet before closing out the show with "By The Throat."

Since their debut release of their first single "Lies" and then "Mother We Share" a year ago, Chvrches has been put under a microscope as the hype surrounding them grew and grew.  Now, with the release of their debut album this past September, Chvrches have met those high expectations and then some.

11 Girl Bands That Are Rocking Our World Right Now | Marie Claire

photos by picksysticks
What a great list.  Marie Claire just posted an article about the "11 Girl Bands That Are Rocking Our World Right Now" that range form a wide variety of pop, folk to rock acts.  Of the 11 on the list, we've seen 5 of them which includes The Staves, HAIM, Uh Huh Her, Tegan and Sara and Warpaint.  Here's what they had to say about them:

These LA sisters set 2013 on fire with their critically acclaimed debut, Days Are Gone, which saw them sign with Jay Z’s Roc Nation record label and storm some of the biggest festival stages the world over. Seeing out their incredible year on British soil, the talented trio’s raw live show is still where they shine brightest. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Another set of LA cool cats to influence not only your record collection, but your wardrobe, too. Currently working on their second album, and follow up to 2010’s The Fool, these NME favourites do haunting indie rock better than most. Already confirmed for next summer’s Field Day festival, you can catch this captivating lot in the UK throughout 2014.

Tegan and Sara
Leaders of the all-girl pack, identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin have been writing and recording together for over 16 years. The Canadian duo are now masters of an infectious folk rock sound and 2013 marked their seventh successful release with Heartthrob. Dancing shoes at the ready.

The Staves
If Laura Marling started a girl band, it would probably sound (and look) a lot like Watford’s The Staves. Firm favourites in the female folk scene, their enchanting harmonies and heartwarming melodies will whisk you off to a place far, far away. Somewhere in the ‘70s, no doubt. You’ll want to discover these Brit heroines before all your friends do, trust us.

Uh Huh Her
Time for some electro-pop courtesy of LA duo Uh Huh Her. Surrounded by industry hype from the outset, largely due to bassist Leisha Hailey’s role on TV drama The L Word, they’re now fully-fledged musicians in their own right. Currently teasing new material on Twitter, there’s more exciting things to come, watch this space.

Have you heard of that cool new concert venue in LA?  Have some nutritional and organic food while browsing the vinyl isle as you listen to live bands.  If you guessed Whole Foods then you are a total hipster.

Whole Foods Market on 3rd and Fairfax will have their Concert Series this Friday (Dec. 13th) with and in-store performance by one of my favorite bands Bleached.  The event, sponsored by Filter Magazine wil also include signings and appetizers, beer and wine!!    Also, according to the flyer, besides healthy foods, Whole Foods has now completely turned into the coolest grocery store in the world by carrying vinyl records.  "Vinyl records? Yeah, sure. Vinyl records are on isle 8, next to the roasted seaweed snacks."   Ride Your Heart, the new album from Bleached, will be available for purchase.

Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee
Waxahatchee performs at The Center of the Arts in Eagle Rock.
photos by picksysticks
The Center for the Arts Eagle Rock hosted an AMAZING lineup of bands Thursday night, each band creating their own buzz in the music scene in the past couple years - all currently on the Don Giovanni Record label.  It was also a night that saw twin sisters Katie and Allison Crutchfield fronting separate bands since they disbanded their band in 2011 and showing how their talents can take them on very different musical paths

Katy Goodman of UPSETUPSET's Jennifer Prince and Ali Koehler

But the night starting off with UPSET, made up of former Best Coast drummer Ali Koehler who trades in sticks for picks, fronting this LA outfit.  Supporting their debut album She's Gone which dropped  last August via Don Giovanni Records, UPSET, along with Koehler,  consists  of La Sera's Katy Goodman playing bass and Jennifer Prince on guitar.  Equal parts fast and heavy but also bright and colorful: perfect for those who love punk rock but love to mosh in a sun dress.  With drum heavy beats, UPSET echoes the punky-pop sounds of The Muffs with the beach-surf melodies of the Beach Boys in songs like "Let Go" and "Queen Frosteen."   And with catchy songs like "Queen Frosteen" and "Don't Lose Your Dinosaur," Upset doesn't take themselves too seriously with lyrics like "Don't lose your dinosaur because there's always more where that came from" and "Queen Frosteen my enemy she's everything and I'm nobody..."

Upset Setlist: Let It Go / Oxfords ad Wingtips / Queen Frosteen / Game Over / Back to School / Don't Lose Your Dinosaur / Never Wanna / She's Gone / 7 Seconds /  You and I

Allison Crutchfield and Kyle Gilbride of Swearin'

photos by picksysticks
Next up was Swearin', the four-piece rock outfit based out of Philly, consists of Allison Crutchfield, Kyle Gilbride, Keith Spencer and Jeff Bolt.  While others have made the comparisons to The Breeders and Pavement, for me, they remind me of The Pixies' slacker, laid back melodies that quickly bursts into explosive energy.  Either way, those are great bands to be associated with and even mentioned in the same sentence with.  Their songs, based off of their two LPs Swearin' and Surfing Strange are painted with scuzzy guitars highlighted with deep, throbbing drums that even had former Best Coast drummer Ali Koehler air-drumming along offstage.

Swearin' Setlist: Into / Hear to Hear / Irrational / Kenosha / Sub / Echo Locate / Watered Down / Just / Young / Crashing / Dust in the Gold Sack

Katie Crutchfield of WaxahatcheeKatie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee

Of course, the highlight of the night was watching Katie Crutchfield's Waxahatchee take the stage. I missed her at this years' SXSW so I was happy when she returned to Los Angeles to play.  Although at this show at Eagle Rock, about 20 minutes outside of Los Angeles, the crowd is different from the a usual LA crowd in such a way that you can expect to see tons of cell phones raised, taking pics or videos, tweeting, instagramming, etc., this crowd really seemed more focused on the music; so focused, they came out to pack the Center for the Arts in 40 degree temperatures  - that's freezing for L.A. standards.  Often times they did seem too focused, like a study hall in a library as it was so quiet between songs that Katie, drummer Keith Spencer and bassist Katherine Simonetti giggled and hushed each between songs.  But maybe that's because Katie's songs border melancholy-folk and pop which bleeds emotional and a deep vulnerability that she shines in its simplicity leaving the crowd awestruck in her powerful and meaningful tunes.

The venue, also not your typical LA venue, preferring simple red lights as opposed to flashy, colorful light show that flash and blink to the point of near epileptic seizure attack. The Center of the Arts know that the music is the main focus and that's how they like to showcase their shows. Which is why, this night, Waxahatchee's songs seemed hauntingly beautiful under the darkened lights, awash in sunset reds as though the crowd huddled quietly around her for the glow of her passionate and warming melodies.

Waxahatchee performed songs from both Cerulean Salt and American Weekend, her critically acclaimed 2012 LP.  Her most recent, Cerulean Salt, was released last March which landed on many Top 10 and Best Album of the Year lists.

Waxahatchee Setlist: Chapel of Pines / Coast to Coast / Misery Over Dispute / Waiting / Brother Bryan / Bathtub / Lively / Make Your Own Kinda / Blue Pt. 2 / Lips and Limbs / Grass Stain / Swan Dive / Peace and Quiet / American Weekend / Noccalula

Dia Frampton performs at Club Nokia.
THE CRYSTAL METHOD have launched the video for their newest single “Over It” featuring Dia Frampton on VEVO.  The song appears on their upcoming fifth studio album, titled The Crystal Method out January 14.

Directed by Zak Stoltz, the “Over It” video follows Dia Frampton--“The Voice”’s season two contestant and one half of indie duo Meg & Dia-- through a “Top Chef”-style baking competition where the odds are stacked in  her  competitors'  favor   as  they use  their  sexuality  to sway  the judges. Dia quickly realizes what's going on and uses her wits to turn the other girls against each other and rise above the ridiculousness to win. THE CRYSTAL METHOD’s KEN JORDAN and SCOTT KIRKLAND also have cameos.  Equal parts fun and sexy, it’s smart from start to finish.
