In their first ever US tour, London Grammar played to a sold-out crowd at The Troubadour last Wednesday.  Their album If You Wait, released on September 17th debuted at #2 on Billboard's UK chart is riding high off their hit singles "Strong" and "Wasting My Young Years."

The London trio, consisting of Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman and Dot Major, weave moody, trance-like melodies that comes off hauntingly beautiful.   Add to that their deep and dark synth beats and Hannah's airy yet delicate vocals and you'll find yourself getting high yourself in their hypnotic and intoxicating world.

LORDE performs at The Fonda Theater.

Lorde (aka: Ella Yelich-O'Connor) is only 16 years old. She hails from New Zealand and has been writing since she was 13 years old, right about the time she signed to her first record label. This past month she's basically the talk of the town in the music industry and has had a slew of shows in New York and Los Angeles, selling out each one in mere minutes and begin heralded by music and fashion sites like Billboard, TEEN Vogue, MTV, Elle and NME.  She even graced the cover of Billboard Magazine labelling her the "New Queen of Alternative."

Riding high on her hit singles "Royals" and "Tennis Court," she releases her debut album Pure Heroine this Monday, a brooding, dark and minimalistic record that showcases her writing talent and smooth yet enchanting vocals.  She proves less is more, simplifying her melodies with deep percussions layered with longing and free-floating harmonies.

Check out one of my favorites "400 Lux"  from her new album below.

Charli XCX (aka: Charlotte Aitchison)  is currenty one of the hottest artists around today, sharing the stage with Ellie Goulding and Marina and the Diamonds.  She even postponed her U.S. headlining tour when pop-rockers Paramore asked her to open up for them on their UK tour.  She's also in high demand as a songwriter.  She penned Icona Pop's hit song "I Love It" and she recently revealed that she was asked by Britney Spears' people to write a song for Brit Brit's upcoming album.   In fact, Time Magazine recently named Charli XCX one of the "11 Albums to Look Forward to in 2013"  describing her voice that "...outshines many more seasoned singers," and her songs that are "...alternately gorgeous, anthemic, throbbing and occasionally weird, with soaring vocals and swelling choruses that sweep you up in their melodies."

Today, she released her new video for "SuperLove," a bouncy, pixie-dust of a song set in a Japanese disco complete with dancing robots and sugary-pop lights blinking to the infectious beat.  Apparently, it's the first single off of her sophomore album which she's currently recording. That album isn't expected to be released until next year.

The Sounds
The Sounds, with their new single "Weekend" premiering today seems to be celebrating a rebirth with a rejuvinated sound.   The song is off their upcoming album of the same name which drops October 29th  via Arnioki Records/INgrooves.  If you were a big fan of  2010's Living In America, then you might be surprised to hear a more softer side of the Swedish band in "Weekend."  Slow and melodic, the song is a rock ballad anthem that highlights The Sounds' vulnerable side.  Listen to the track below and download the song, for a limited time, right HERE.

Eyes Set To Kill performed last week at The Wiltern, promoting the release of their new album Masks which dropped Sept. 17th.  It's their fifth studio album and first with Century Media Records - a label who allowed them to make the record they wanted to make.  What they came up with was a harder, no-holds barred sound.  Lighting quick with thunderous beats and heavy guitars leave no room to catch your breath with lead vocal trade-offs between Alexia Rodriguez's soft but deadly to Cisko Miranda's killer yet piercing vocals.

Sky Ferreira

It's been a newsworthy month for model/singer Sky Ferreira.  Probably the most famous model/singer you've never heard of with the most anticipated album since she performed for the first time onstage last year at The Bootleg Theater.

Gracing the front cover of every single fashion magazine on the Earth and selling out venues without having a proper album release she recently made headlines when she was reportedly arrested, along with her boyfriend Zachary Cole Smith,  for drug possession in New York.  Sky was booked on misdemeanor charges after police say they found ecstasy in her possession and was also charged with resisting arrest.  All this as her label finally announced that her highly anticipated debut album titled My Night, My Time will finally be released on October 29th.

Today, she released an official music video teaser trailer for her upcoming single "Your'e Not The One."  Check it out below along with a live performance of the song.

Check out Tegan & Sara's new video for "Goodbye" off their album Heartthrob.   In this internet age of texting, IM'ing, tweeting and Facebook, intamacy has taken on a new meaning.  This is the theme of "Goodbye" as we see couples breakup via keypad and social media.

"'Goodbye, Goodbye' is a sound off about rejection and the empowerment of shutting someone out after a break-up, but it’s also an acknowledgement of the distorted nature of intimacy that comes from communicating complex emotions through a cell phone or email," Sara Quinn tells HuffPost Canada Music which premiered the music video earlier this week.

Head over to NPR where they're streaming Mazzy Star's new album Seasons of Your Day, her first album in 17 years. Below is an excerpt:

Seasons of Your Day (out Sept. 24) is the first Mazzy Star record in 17 years, and it comes as the group's sound is being echoed by younger artists — see Baltimore's shadowy Beach House and the mutable glam-pop of Lana Del Rey. It's a lovely, intoxicating record, but the group's sound has also evolved. "It's so far, far away," Sandoval sings in "California," a largely acoustic song with an echo of Led Zeppelin's Joni Mitchell mash note "Going to California." The line could reference a place, but Sandoval could also be addressing the pop-music profile she'd left behind.
Click HERE to stream the album. "Seasons of Your Day" goes on sale September 24th.

Co-written by Hope Sandoval and David Roback, Seasons Of Your Day was  recorded in California and Norway. The album features performances  by all the original members of Mazzy Star along with special guests  including Colm O’Ciosoig (My Bloody Valentine) and a special appearance by the late, legendary Bert Jansch in a guitar duet of chilling intensity with David Roback on the song “Spoon”.

Seasons Of Your Day was produced by David Roback and Hope Sandoval. The album is being released on their own label, Rhymes Of An Hour Records, distributed through INgrooves. Formats will include CD, 180g vinyl double LP, and digital download.

Audra Mae
Ms. Audra Mae performs at The Hotel Cafe.
Our sister site Bored 4 Music just posted their "1st Song of the Day" from Avicii called "Addicted to You" featuring Ms. Audra Mae.   It comes from his album True which is out now.  Here's what he has to say:
“Addicted To You’ is my favorite track from the record because it is connecting to stuff in my personal life on top of being chilling.  What love song doesn’t?  Romantic problems.  However, can never really hate songs that take my breath away.  This one will.  Might also make you want to do the tango in anger.  Whichever comes first.  Nothing more to say.  Enjoy this and go buy ‘TRUE’!
Of course, the highlight of the track is Audra Mae's smokey yet soulful voice.  She's a local singer, transplanted from Oklahoma and we've had the honor of following her since 2008 when she was playing smaller venues like Genghis Cohen and Hotel Cafe and was actually performing classic Americana before Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers made it hip  again.   Mae’s strengths rely on weaving inspiring melodies that express a tragic melancholy, proving that simplicity, to the point of near silence, can hold the purest of emotions.

Since then she's collaborated with some of the biggest names in music.  Other than working with Avicci, Ms. Mae has been featured on tv shows, singing a cover of Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" on FX's "Sons of Anarchy," she wrote the only original song on Susuan Boyle's debut album, helping it become 2009's second best-selling album and she penned "Somebody Loves Somebody," for Celine Dion's  upcoming album Loved Me Back to Life which drops in November.

What a rousing and uplifting debut from LA based artist White Sea (aka: Morgan Kibby).  "They Don't Know," which debuted on Gorilla vs. Bear is a sonic rainbow that weaves itself around you like a multi-layered sweater, knit with soaring melodies that lifts you up and then drops you into a soft, gliding fall to Earth.   If you wanted to know how it feels to fly, just listen to White Sea's "They Don't Know."

MR. LITTLE JEANS @ Santa Monica's Twilight Concert Series

Thursday night  during the Annual Twilight Concert Series presented by Myspace,  Norwegian singer Mr. Little Jeans (aka: Monica Birkenes) fought technical issues in a night that would've been a magical show overlooking the beach and the neon glow of the Santa Monica pier.

Sound issues, that were no fault of her own, also added to the rough outing. Monica couldn't hear herself on her monitors, often leaning forward or running towards the front of the stage to hear herself on the speakers.  Off stage, I actually overheard staffers coming from the beach, unable to hear over the loud bass, question the audio guy, "I don't think the sound guy know's what he's doing."

But despite the technical issues, Mr. Little Jeans' inspiring performance highlighted her dreamscape melodies and lush vocals as Monica soldiered through her set performing hit singles like "Oh Sailor" and "Runaway,"  proving why she's becoming one of the most buzzed about artists coming out of Norway.

During the night, she also told the crowd about her first time visiting the Santa Monica Pier and how she tried to help a street performer by lending her voice to no avail.   She also revealed that her highly anticipated debut album will be released early next year.  Monica actually relocated to Hollywood to record the full-length album with producers John Hill (Shakira, Santigold) and Tim Anderson (Ima Robot, Dead Man's Bones).

Sibille Attar
Sibille Attar
In Scandivia, I imagine an assembly line of jolly elves tightening the bolts and screws of bands that they've built during the long night.  I'd like to think that the musical landscape in countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark reveals a sonic wonderland of chocolate rivers, cotton-candy pink trees and fields of candy cane.

Recently, with bands like Robyn, Icona Pop, Mr. Little Jeans and NONONO attacking our senses, the area is fast becoming known for their fairytale imagery in their music with melodies that sprinkles blissful tunes like light glittery snowflakes flowing out of a crystal ball.   Today, another song I accidentally fell across and immediately loved was, no surprise, from Sweden.  The musician is named Sibille Attar who has been compared to singers like Bjork, Kate Bush and Patti Smith.  Her song "Come Night" is an infectious theme that celebrates life and love as she sings "You sit by your window, I know your thinking of me...Ain't no way of living for I'm a believer of love...Take me home, take me home."   After listening, you can't help but take believe and take her words as your own. Listen to the track below.

Straight off touring on Vans Warped Tour, two of the hottest bands performed at Universal's 5 Towers Summer Concert Series on Monday night.  The Summer Set and Echosmith's pop-alternative showcase packed the main concorse at CityWalk for a free concert.

Echosmith's debut album Talkind Dreams drops October 1st.
Echosmith, one of the most surprising acts of the year, has been all the buzz since their summer sampler debuted last July, promising something not normally associated with a young, teeny band such as themselves.  Their sound?  Much more mature-sounding as one would think when you hear the band's age range; 14-20.  Also surprising are their musical influences ranging from The Smiths, U2, Fleetwood Mac to Joy Division so imagine their sound when fused with '80s pop and the alternative attitude of the '90s. You get songs like the shoe-gazy, mysterious "Cool Kids" and the Breakfast Club inspired "Come Together."

This night at Universal's 5 Towers stage, Echosmith are a natural performing on stage.  Their confident stage presence just highlights their electric show fueled by youthful songs that are smart and fresh - a complete 180 from the Britney Spears' and Miley Cyrus' of the world.  This a band parents would love their kids to emulate.

Birdy Biography (via iTunes):
English singer/pianist Jasmine van den Bogaerde, who goes by the stage name "Birdy," was born in 1996 in Lymington, Hampshire. Precocious from the very start, Bogaerde began composing her own songs at the age of seven, and by 12 had secured the top spot (out of 10,000 competitors) at 2008's Open Mic UK, a popular live music competition that rewards the winner with a recording contract. In January of 2011, she released her first single, a cover of American indie rock outfit Bon Iver's "Skinny Love," which peaked at number 17 on the U.K. pop charts. Her eponymous full-length debut, released through Atlantic Records, arrived later that November. The record was a huge success, particularly in Australia, Belgium, Holland and France, where it shot straight to number one in the chart, while it also reached the UK Top 20. The collection of stripped back arrangements was mostly compiled of indie artists, including The Postal Service and Fleet Foxes, whose songs were overhauled by Bogaerde's haunting voice and sparse production. The follow-up to her debut presented a new phase in Bogaerde's development as her sophomore album Fire Within displayed her own songwriting talent with 11 original tracks. The album was written with help from collaborators such as Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé, Leona Lewis), Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift) and Mumford & Sons pianist Ben Lovett and was slated for release in 2013. ~ James Christopher Monger & Scott Kerr, Rovi

I'm loving his band.  If there was an Instagram for music, Parlours would be a filter - vintage and timeless.  Like flipping through a lifetime of old photographs, faded over time, their songs have a story to tell; a collage of melodies, scattered delicately and fanned over your quilted bed sheets.

Self-describes as 'folkware-dreampop"  this quintet from Des Moines, Iowa fuses pop-haze, free-floating melodies with soft and graceful vocals from Dana Halferty. And it's those sounds that has music critics, from NPR to The Chicago Tribune singing their praises.  And now you can too see what all the fuss is about.  Currently, for a limited time, NoiseTrade is offering selected Parlours songs for FREE.  Just head over right HERE to download.  And check out my personal favs "Dreamers," "I Don't Mind" and "I Dream of Chicago."

Hearing her soulful voice for the first time, Eliza Doolittle seems like an old soul trapped in a 25 year old's body.  But it's her youth she has to thank that makes her songs sound fresh, mixing breezy folk with vintage pop melodies.  One listen to her infectious tunes and powerful voice will have you hooked and wanting more.

"Let It Rain" is her new single off her upcoming album In Your Hands which drops October 14th via Parlophone Records and it's a new grown up sound from Eliza that we've heard since she burst onto the scene with her flirty, bubble-gum, pop hit singles "Rollerblades" and "Skinny Genes."  Check out the video below.

They look like a '60's girl group. They sound like a melding of classic Americana and a church choir that's backed by a high school marching band. But once you hear this quintet, everything starts to make sense.   Their name is Lucius, hailing from Brooklyn but has roots in Los Angeles.

Currently on tour to promote their upcoming debut album "Wildewoman," out Oct. 15th, Lucius has been generating a lot of buzz recenlty since they released their EP last year, getting shout-outs from music taste-makers like Time Magazine, New York Times, NPR and Rolling Stone while already playing at some of the most noteworthy music festivals like Bonnaroo, CMJ Music Fest and SXSW.

Last Wednesday, the group, consisting of Jess Wolfe, Holly Laessig, Dan Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri, stopped by The Echo and performed to a sold out crowd playing songs from their self-titled EP and new songs from their upcoming album.

The crowd this night was filled with music lovers young and old which is why it's not surprising Lucius has been generating quite the buzz.  Their saturated textures of free-floating vocals backed by booming, soulful percussions evoke a simple era of country-folk that's infused with fresh, pop balladry that every generation will find appealing; a universal language that everyone seems to understand.

They set the tone with their opener "Tempest," a sensual and infectious tune highlighting their tight and in-sync vocals which then overflowed into breezy and billowy choruses in the tender "How Loud Your Heart Gets."

New songs like "Wildewoman" and "Until We Get There" deliver soft, pop melodies that echoes the wholesome sounds of Staves and the uplifting beats of HAIM. But then there's the pop, booming percussion songs like "Hey, Doreen" and "Turn it Around" that proves that Lucius can go from tranquil, folk-poetry to soaring, high altitude melodies.

Of course, the highlight of watching Lucius are the tormented yet rich vocal harmonies of Jess and Holly in which they sing each song together and are showcased in their much simpler songs like "Go Home" and  "Don't Just Sit There," which echoes classic Americana and country heartbreak.

Lucius closed the night with a couple covers including Grimes' "Oblivion" and Paul McCartney's "Goodbye" where they walked to the floor, engulfed by the crowd.

Lucius are currently on tour through December. Their new album, from Mom + Pop will arrive October 15th.

Setlist:  Tempest / Go Home / Don't Just Sit There / Wildewoman / Monsters / Until We Get There / Hey, Doreen / Genevieve / How Loud You Heart Gets / Oblivion (Grimes Cover), Turn It Around / Goodbye (Paul McCartney cover)
