Neon Jungle
Neon Jungle
With boy bands saturating the headlines, from The Wanted and One Direction, it's time for some girls groups to grab some attention.  We've already seen Little Mix creeping up on our social media streams here in the States.  UnfortunEatley, for these bands, most of the headlines have been about their personal lives rather than the music;  1D's Zayne Malik's engagment to Little Mix's Perrie Edwards, Harry and Swift and even Lohan and The Wanted's Max George.

Now, Neon Jungle, the latest girl group to throw their hats in the ring, are looking to change all that and trying to bLaze their own trail that breaks the girl-group mold .  Their new single "Trouble" which will be released tomorrow (Sept. 1st) is given an acoustic but energetic treatment in this new performance from The Line of Best Fit.  Check it out below.

Elizabeth Morris of Allo Darlin'
Elizabeth Morris of Allo Darlin' performs at The Echo last year.

It's been awhile since we've heard from  Allo Darlin', the UK band known for the infectious, willowy-pop ballads.   Simple in its lullaby melodies, Allo Darlin has been busy recording their new album in London, tentatively titled We Come From the Same Place.  They have a few dates scheduled, possibly to try out their new songs in October.  Until then, to hold you over unitl their new album is released, lead vocalist Elizabeth Morris has released a solo EP.  But don't worry.  Allo Darlin isn't splitting up.  As Morris explains, she wrote some songs that didn't feel like Allo Darlin' songs which written during a turbulent time in her life and she decided to record them.

"This is not meant to mean anything other than I had these songs, and I didn't know what to do with them. But I wanted them to be heard at some point. "

Much different from Allo Darlin' songs, these Morris penned songs are delicate like the fine, fragile leaves of a dandelion, on the vergeo of being blown away by a slight, cool breeze.  "Optimism" shimmers like morning dew on a rose petal - a moment in time that's short and sweet as Morris sings "You're too young to give up on Optimism. I don't know what to do when you look at me straight in the eye."  It's a light melody that's powerful in its simplicity, playied on vulnerable keys just like "Young Republic,"  inspired by her great-great-great grandmother's 1850's piano.

Morris recorded with her friend Darren Hayman and this release is only available via digital release at Bandcamp right HERE

KITTEN'S Chloe Chaidez
KITTEN performs at SXSW.

KITTEN'S new EP Like A Stranger drops today and I can't get enough of it, especially their single "I'll Be Your Girl,"  a song that feels like it was ripped from a John Hughes film.  You know the type of scene I'm talking about.  It's a high school prom and our female lead, down on her luck, just got dumped by the handsome jock, leaving her alone on the dance floor when, unsuspectingly, her 'true' knight in shining armor (usually her best, nerdy guy friend) comes to the rescue to sweep her off her feet and they kiss and live happily ever after. And roll credits with Kitten's "I'll Be Your Girl" playing over hundreds of meaningless names.  Just give me a tissue already!!

You can catch KITTEN when they perform at The Observatory on Sept. 4th.  And you can now download Kitten's Like A Stranger EP on iTunes right HERE.  For only 5 bucks people!  Get on it!

Those Darlins
Hula-hooping hip actions and gyrating mid-sections.  All that's missing is a little twerking in this newest NSFW video by Those Darlins, the  power-pop band from Nashville.  The song is called "Optimist" and it's the first single off their new album Blur The Line that drops October 1st and shows women, unrestrained and fiercely dancing to the tune which proudly belt's out "Used to be an Optimist. It got to dangerous...they all say la ti da."

This Saturday, Those Darlins begin their two-month tour in Troy, Ohio.  Their Los Angeles stop will hit The Echo on November 7th.  Click HERE to pre-order the album and to see the rest of the tour dates.

Oh how I love this band.   Go to FILTER right now to listen to KITTEN's new EP Like A Stranger in its entirety.  With each new EP, the LA-based band, fronted by Chloe Chaidez,  continues to surprise, writing songs with layers of complexity with rising, romanticized melodies and dancable retro synths.   The EP drops tomorrow (August 27th) and you get a with this EP, that KITTEN is redefining '80s new wave.

Click right HERE to listen to Like A Stranger.

There's something about the sounds of tribel-esque drum beats  that makes me celebrate and appreciate life.

Manicaparty, the Minneapolis duo, consisting of Pat Morrisey and Jess Corazza, inspires joy in their new video "Moncarch."  This upbeat single uses rising, pop melodies to celebrate the joys of living life like it's your last day on Earth.  There last song 'Rebels in the Light" feels the same way. Check out both songs below.

Jay Jay and Kimi Encarnacion of Moonpools and Caterpillars
Reunion show: Moonpools and Caterpillars' Jay Jay and Kimi Encarnacion perform for the first time in 15 years.
photos by picksysticks
I'm still recovering from the awesomeness of last month's Moonpools and Caterpillars' reunion show.  It was their first show in 15 years and they decided to return for a very special cause - Ethiopia Health Aid, a charity show that raised over $25,000; money used to ship donated ambulances and bring medical supplies as well as educational resources to villages in Ethiopia.

The sold-out benefit concert, held at David Henry Hwang Theater in downtown Los Angeles on July 27th, brought back original members, Kimi Ward Encarnacion, Jay Jay Encarnacion, Tim De Palma and Gugut Salazar to what was mostly a friendly and informal affair with close friends, family and loyal fans old and new.

From their first song to their last, Moonpools and Caterpillars didn't show any rust after a long absence from the stage, performing fan favorites from their two albums.  The only time they did show their age was halfway into their set when they took a pause to catch their breath.  "Talk amongst yourselves," Kimi joked to the crowd. With the audience getting out of their seats to dance and crowd the front of the stage, the welcomed break also gave everyone time to also catch their breaths. The band also got a break when Kimi performed an inspired, solo rendition of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

Throughout the intimate show, Kimi, Gugut, Tim and Jay Jay smiled, waved and acknowledged friends and family in the crowd between and during songs. For me, seeing them for the first time after falling in love with their debut album, Lucky Dumpling, 15 years ago was a dream come true.  If you closed your eyes, you'd think you were listening to their cd. They were that polished and spot on after nearly three decades of not playing together.

From Kimi’s yodeling and Tim’s high-flying scissor-kicks to Jay’s confident and controlled play on guitar and Gugut’s playful drum beats, Moonpools and Caterpillars transformed the David Henry Hwang Theater into a time machine that transported everyone back to 1995; from the rousing and electrifying "Hear" that opened their set and got everyone out of their seats to the ever delicate and uplifting "Summertime" and the vulnerable, lullaby "Heaven,” their songs, just like fine wine, had aged well through the years.

Making a point not to take an encore so they can squeeze in as many songs as possible, Moonpools and Caterpillars sang a marathon 18 songs chosen from two of their albums Lucky Dumpling and 12 Songs.  Fans danced, cheered and sang along to songs like  "Ooh Ooh," "Summertime" and "Traveling Song."

At the end of the showcase, when everyone in the theater realized the end was near, Kimi fought back tears. "
Ok so it's time," Kimi announced. "This has been so great...Thanks so much for being here,"  she finished as they closed their set with "Crazy Old World" and brought up their children onstage to share the spotlight.

All in all, the night was successful not just in reuniting Moonpools and Caterpillars but raising awareness and raising much needed cash and donations for Ethiopia.  And with the success of  Ethiopia Health Aid, no word yet on whether Moonpools and Caterpillars will perform again or even write new music.  All Kimi can say is when we interviewed them last month were  “We have a few ideas in the works. Stay tuned.”

A driving force of sugary-pop melodies with dual vocals that We Are The In Crowd are known for, their new single, released today, just screams for "Attention."   The new single is more like an anthem for today's youth, their conflicts of identity and the journey they must all face to find out who they are meant to be.   "I Know the way I want to be but I'm trapped in who I am," lead singer Taylor Jardine sings. "The only thng that holds me back is not believing.."

The Nearly Deads drops Survival Guide today.
When The Nearly Deads burst on the scene with their self-titled EP in 2011, no one expected a rock band from Nashville to be the talk of the town, much less from music taste-makers.   A proverbial knock on the door proclaiming they had arrived it wasn't.  It was more of a banging on that door that caught the attention of the music industry - MTV, FUSE and Billboard to name a few.  Spots performing at high-profile music festivals like Warped Tour and Summerfest soon followed while their zombie hit single "Never Look Back" took the internet by storm with their video being viewed over 5 million times.  These are all accomplishments any Billboard Top 40 band would dream to have.  But what's more surprising is that The Nearly Deads accomplished all of this without the backing of a label or full-length album.

Today, with the release of their new EP Survival Guide via Standby Records, The Nearly Deads are no longer crashing parties, they're now just trying to save everyone inside from becoming victims from the zombie apocalypse.  Six tracks of pure, pounding adrenalin and take-no-prisoners guitar assault, Survival Guide is the perfect soundtrack to the end of the world. No other band does full-throttle as intense as The Nearly Deads. It's that fear that keeps you alive, heart pounding and senses on full alert.

"Brave" leads the charge against the undeads. "I'm the one that has to live...I am brave and you can't take that away, I'll be fighting everyday," lead singer Theresa Jeane sings on the lead single while heartbreak looms over "Reasons" delving into leaving and losing someone you once loved.  And in a world where people just want to fit in, chaos of identity and the push and pulling of being somebody you are not while trying to find the person you are meant to be sums up "Changeover."

In fact, Survival Guide's themes can also be applied as a survival guide to life.  And with universal lyrics of  love, lost and heartbreak along with a unique and fresh sound all their own, The Nearly Deads are proving why the music industry are taking notice.  You can purchase Survival Guide right HERE.

Like the burn of dry whiskey, they personify rock and roll at its finest.  Classic rock with no apologies - and to do it with only sole guitarist Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards on sticks.  The one-time drummer of indie-darlings Pity Party, Edwards lets loose, feriously.  There is order in her chaos.  And add to that Troy's gravelly vocals and distorted guitars, and you get what some are comparing them to White Stripes and Black Keyes.

Juliet Simms

The Voice's second season runner-up Juliet Simms has just released her new single "A Heart Doesn't Beat On Its Own." The song, first posted on her band's Automatic Love Letter Facebook page, is a song of the heartbreak of a crumbled romance and the hard decision of leaving.  Simms, known for her powerful and weathered voice shows her soft and vulnerable side  as she sings of driving away.

As in so many relationships, just like in real life, we drive this so-called 'road of life' driving forward as we look at our rear-view mirror of what we left behind just like in Simm's touching song "A Heart Doesn't Beat On Its Own."

"Every inch, every mile, reminded me of the vacancy, next to me where you used to be. How could I say goodbye?"   Juliet sings struggling though her most difficult decision and then ends this rock lullaby with "It's a lonely road when you're leaving you're only home. I can't believe that I let you go...I know a heart doesn't beat on its own."

Juliet Simms just finished her tour on Vans Warped Tour and since finishing second on NBC's The Voice, she has signed with Republic Records and her Voice mentor, Cee Lo Green is now managing her career.  Check out her new single below.

Meeting through a mutual friend, the three formed NONONO during the spring of 2012; around the time Stina returned from the UK where she had spent three years studying to be a psychologist.

Kitten performs at The Jubilee  2013held in Downtown Los Angeles.
Wow. It's still hard to believe KITTEN's lead singer, Chloe Chaidez is only 18 years old and writing such amazing songs.  Seriously!!   If you haven't been to their live shows then you're missing out on something really special.

Still riding high off their Cut it Out debut studio EP last year, KITTEN just announced they're releasing their new EP Like a Stranger on August 27th.  And judging by their latest single, released today, their sound which echoes '80s pop, seems to be maturing with each EP.

"Like A Stranger" still bleeds '80s retro with dark synth melodes that highlight Chloe's weathered and, often times, sultry vocals.  It's a glitter explosion with touches of romantic, vintage tones; something their loyal fans have come to love and should expect from their debut full-length album expected to drop next year via Elekra Records.

You can pre-order Like A Stanger EP right HERE.

Nylo performs during her Indigo Summer mixtape release show at The Viper Room
It's rare that I can play an entire cd without skipping over a few bad songs to get to the good ones.

Nylo, the 22 year-old, Chi Town native, has one such cd.  It's actually her new mixtape called Indigo Summer and she celebrated its release by performing a secret release party at The Viper Room on the famed Sunset Strip.

Her songs? Like a modern art piece, accompanied by a soundtrack, layered by light, brush strokes of R&B, soul and pop.  You leave feeling full-filled, wanting more because it stays with you for days. And another thing, it's super sexy. Just listen to "Rent Free" and "Someone Like You."  And this month, SPIN magazine just named her one of the top 5 'Best New Artists of 2013.'

Right now, Indigo Summer is available for download right HERE. She's expected to release another mixtape in the fall called Indigo Rose.

The only band I'd want to be listening to as I attack that lonely desert straightaway to Vegas is Deap Vally.  Dirty guitars and scowling vocals that act as an adrenaline rush as you pass Barstow towards Sin City.

Deap Vally are Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, the LA duo gaining critical acclaim for their non-apologetic and attitude-laced rock.  Oh, and they also have a debut album Sistrionix that's out almost everywhere but here stateside.  That album will be available this fall.   They've been playing a lot of dates overseas but we'll finally get a chance to see Deap Vally when they headline The Troubadour on August 13th.

Sisters Alana, Danielle and Este who make up HAIM has, probably, the most anticipated debut albums this year.   Last week HAIM released the first single "The Wire" off their debut album which will finally be released Septeber 30th titled Days Are Gone via Polydor/Columbia.

Growing up in the San Fernando valley, the sisters, consisting of Alana, Danielle and Este, were raised in a musical family, touring with their parents and performing at street fairs and charities under the name Rockinhaim.

With echoes of their parents' generation of music like Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell, HAIM borrows from their own generation, layering touches of rock, R&B and alternative. But it's their trance-inducing percussions and silky-smooth harmonies that will make you get up on your feet and dance.

The shy duo on stage are Timothy Heller and Jared Ryan Maldonado and they make up Portland's Dresses. Soft spoken and, I imagine, vegetarians (just kidding...unless they are), they make their music do the talking. Lush-pop that overflows with feels makes me want to run across a field of daisies if I wasn't too allergic to the darn flowers.  Dresses, this night at The Troubadour, from the outset for their first song, I began to feel the allergic rash as I ran through that field in my mind.  But aside from their fresh hooks, it's Timothy's unique playful vocals that is the highlight of this group.

Almost playing their new EP Sun Shy in its entirety, their songs, infectious melodies that are sun-kissed by Portland's ever-scarce and rare sunshine.   Heck! They're from Portlandia - the land a recent survey called 'The Most Hipster-Friendly City in the Country'.  So hipster that the front-woman has a guy's name.  And the other?  Two first names! Anyways, they're too cool to be my friends and I'm too shy to approach them.  So I'll just admire them from afar and wish I was partying with them in their video below!

Laura Stevenson

Laura Stevenson came on stage in a new 'do, joking that she resembled Justin Bieber before she dyed her hair a darker color.  Sad songs of heartbreak and loneliness peppered her set, played on a bare stage with just her guitar and smooth and powerful voice. (I'd like to see Bieber do that! ).  This was my first time seeing her.  Loooooved her.   Spotifying her right now as I write this.  Reminds me of those early Woodstock-era singer/songwriter tunes in the day that my parents always listened too.  Laura is an old soul, stuck and finding her way through this industry that's embracing the digital revolution.  But it's still great to see artists like Laura still 'plugging' away and still playing music that really means something.

Today, August 1st, is officially "Joan Jett Day" as proclaimed by the City of West Hollywood who's hosting the Sunset Strip Music Festival this weekend where Jett will be honored.

The Rock 'n Roll legend, today, also announced she's releasing her new album Unvarnished on October 1st via Blackheart Records.  It'll be her first new music in over a decade.   Her last album, Sinner, was released in 2006.  Unvarnished will be her fourteenth studio album.

Jett will perform her  first single "Any Weather" next Thursday on Jimmy Kimmel Live and will be made available on iTunes on August 6th.

Jett has said that Unvarnished is the most autobiographical project she’s ever done, allowing some of life’s hardest passages, such as the loss of both her parents, dictate what she wrote about. The album also broadens to other subjects, such as applauding the determination of Hurricane Sandy’s victims and lighthearted commentary on today’s trend of oversharing.
