DEAD SARA - BEHIND THE SCENES OF THEIR FIRST HEADLINING SHOW

March 2011:  Dead Sara performs at The Mint in Los Angeles in front of 50 people.
It was March 2011 when we caught Dead Sara opening up for Queen Caveat at The Mint.  It was a kick-off show celebrating local bands chosen to perform at South by Southwest.  Picksysticks was there to catch Queen Caveat when Dead Sara took the stage and blew everyone away with their high energy and stadium ready rock anthems.

What a difference two years makes.  Since that show, Dead Sara has skyrocketed from playing in small venues to performing in front of thousands opening up for Muse and most recently, selling out their first ever headlining gig at The El Rey.

Check out the video below documenting the behind the scenes El Rey show, their first headling show which they sold out back in May.

UME @ The Echo

UME
UME performs at The Echo.
UME's Los Angeles stop wasn't as smooth sailing as they'd like; dealing with a  busted amp, torn tendons and broken bone.  Instead of enjoying the sun and beach, the Austin Trio spent their LA stop mending equipment and mending wounds.
UME
Lauren Larson of UME

The broken bone in this case was  Lauren's bone nut on her Fender while a rented amp broke and drummer Rachel Fuhrer finished the night with a strained tendon after banging the crap out of her snare after it died in the middle of their set.  But judging by their set last Monday at The Echo, it's surprising they didn't leave Los Angeles inside an ambualance.   Who'd thought being in a rock band was a contact sport?

Thrashing  and energetic, punk-rocking throughout their 40 minute set, Lauren Larson has got to be the most photogenic guitar shredders in music.  With her banshee hair going every which way, the spark-plug of a front-woman, Larson's guitar slaying fingers dashed feverishly on strings of steel.

The night was spent mostly peforming new songs from their upcoming album like the slow burn "Chase It Down" which, like the calm before the storm, lashes out to full on assault mode with lighting stirke solos from Lauren.  "Slow Pog" builds from a prowling hunt to full on chase  while "Bass Face" starts off with poppy drum beats that dips its melody into sweet dark molasses.  UME songs are faced with personality conflicts; usually  mimicking longing,  mesmerizing melodies to lure you in before attacking with deadly, distorted guitars that echo psychedlic buzz saws.

Currently UME is working on their new record with Grammy-winning producer Adam Kasper (Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters).  UME is set to start their East Coast leg of their tour suporting And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead beginning July 10th in New Haven, CT.  Then they head over to Europe for their Sumemr 2013 Tour.

'LAST CALL' FEATURES THE INDECENT

The Indecent
The Indecent performs at The Viper Room in September 2012.
Earlier this week, New York foursome The Indecent were featured on Last Call with Carson Daly where they discussed how they came together and talked about their musical influences.

The Indecent on NBC's  "Last Call with Carson Daly"

Heavy guitars and growling vocals doesn't sound unique but in the hands of  The Indecent?  It's literally like listening to love songs for a bleeding heart.  Comprised of siblings Emily Brout (vocals), Maddy Brout (bass), Bo Brout (guitar) and Nicholas Burrows (drums) this quartet from Brooklyn are probably too young to even remember the musical environment in the mid-90's when it seemed music, in that era, defined a generation.

The Indecent's debut EP Control, from Warner Bros. Records, harkens back to the days of Seattle grunge but underneath lead singer, Emily's raspy and yearning growls are desolate melodies that have a raw sincerity evoking Mazzy Star-like vulnerabilities with the hard-edge attitude of L7.

DAYTROTTER SESSIONS WELCOMES WARDELL

Wardell
Wardell performs during SXSW 2013.
Check out the latest Daytrotter Sessions where Los Angeles band Wardell came to visit and  performed most of their songs from their debut EP Brother/Sister which drops June 3rd.

The brainshild of siblings Theo and Sasha, Wardell echos soft, SoCal beach harmonies and retro melodies which is why Wardell's first single "Opossum" has been on constant repeat on my iPod.

Listen to their set at Daytrotter right HERE where they describe their sound that "...spooks you right into a strange giddiness that borders on dreaminess..." and "...a bunch of longing and a dash of pain."

TONIGHT: SARA BAREILLES @ EL REY, RELEASES NEW VIDEO FOR BRAVE

I love this newest video for "Brave"  from Sara Bareilles about the positives of being brave enough to speak the truth.  "Brave" is the first single off her third studio album which drops later this summer off of Epic Records.

“I have never felt more open and more raw in my entire life. 2012 was a year of deconstruction for me personally,” said Bareilles. “I have been confronting some of my greatest fears in the last handful of months and have been amazed at how empowered I can feel when I muster up the courage to turn and growl back at those monsters under the bed. The songs on this album are a true reflection of everything I’ve come to experience in recent months and I'm going to celebrate that with the next most terrifying thing I can do…go back on the road…totally alone. Just me. And my piano. And maybe a guitar. And some whiskey. And some jokes. And my songs. I’m excited to share this next stage of my career with each and every one of my fans.”

Sara is currently on her "Brave Enough" tour where she'll be performing tonight at The El Rey.

NEW VIDEO: "VLADIMIR" BY THE TABLETS

Think  prom queen, slow dancing while eating the flesh off her date in a crowded gym, infested with the undead.  The band playing in the background would be The Tablets, fronted by Liz Godoy.  The song?  "Vladimir," a slow burning, love ballad that mashes '60s girl group harmonies with dark-pop melodies fittingly suited for this zombie prom.  This Brooklyn-based band, just releasing their first song of a series of quirky videos is part of their upcoming debut LP which drops (dead) June 4th. Check out their video for "Vladimir" below.

Wardell, made up of the brother/sister team of Sasha and Theo Spielberg, spool vintage, '60s tunes as though polyester and root beer floats was back in style.  With classic beach harmonies that float up to the heavens, Wardell feels like a blast from the past.

Their latest single, "Call It What You Want" teases what is to come from the upcoming debut EP that is expected to drop in June.  Check out their new song below along with their first single "Opossum!"

A+ DROPOUTS DOESN'T LIKE "BOY GAMES"

A+ Dropouts
A+ Dropouts
A+ Dropouts performs at last years' Summer Fest in Venice Beach.

A+ Dropouts members spend their days filling their report card with A+'s but when the school bell rings, they rock the stage with their high energy shows.

Their sound reflects living the life as teens  on the sunny shores of the OC - fun and carefree as they sing  of love and heartbreak that only kids at their age can feel because every emotion is new for them.  And that's why Boy Games, the latest EP from  A+ Dropouts, fronted by 15 year-old Cheska Zaide, sounds refreshing and  not forced.  Check out their video for "Boy Games" off their EP.  And you can catch them next week when they play at Chain Reaction in Anaheim on May 18th.

KELSI LUCK KNOWS WHAT SHE LIKES!

Kelsi Luck
Kelsi Luck
Although 22 year-old Kelsi Luck is relatively new to the west coast, recently relocating from St. Louis, MO.,  she's already making quite a splash in the L.A. music scene.   Her new music video, "That's What I Like," released about a month ago, has already been viewed nearly 30,000 times and has been featured on Mtv's HIVE - all this without a formal album release.  With Ting Ting-like dance beats and fun, catchy melodies that echoes Toni Basil, Luck's new video uses cinemagraphs to create a trippy, real-life diorama-esque feel.
