Moonpools and Caterpillars
Then: Moonpools and Caterpillars
The 90s are back!!! The Moonpools and Caterpillars reunion show has long been in the works since August of 2010 after rumors started swirling with the news that the Los Angeles based band started full-band practice sessions and then in January of 2012 when a cryptic post on their official Facebook page stated "Los's gonna happen!!!"

Now, over a year later, it seems all but official that the LA-based band will perform for the first time ever in 15 years after announcing on their Facebook page today "Hey Los Angeles!!! Grab a pen and paper and write down July 27th!!! Ya baby!!!!"  As to possible venues?  They teased The Hotel Cafe as a possibility in the past or they could play The Whisky A Go Go, the site of their very last performance on June 6, 1998. But who knows?  I just know a lot of fans are excited as I am.

"Soon" by Moonpools and Caterpillars

Comprised of Kimi Ward Encarnacion, Jay Jay Encarnacion, Gugut Salgado and Tim de Pala, Moonpools and Caterpillars' rise to fame was accidental. It's said that during one of their shows, an A&R representative from a record label went to one of their shows looking to sign a different band that was also performing that night. Well, the A&R guy got there early and caught Moonpools' set and loved them so much he signed them on the spot. As for the other band? Who knows?

"Hear" by Moonpools and Caterpillars

"Polyester" by Moonpools and Caterpillars

Through the years, Moonpools and Caterpillars have grown a cult-like following by word of mouth, friends making copies for friends, listening to their songs on long car rides and singing along to their universal lyrics of life, proving that their albums hasn't aged through the years and their songs could easily play on radio today.

Today, years later, I still listen to these albums and with the help of the internet, fans –new and old – can rediscover this band that continues to entertain. For me, this was basically the start of Picksysticks and my love for women-fronted bands began.

Also, check out their appearance on Disney's "Wish Upon a Star" which was also Katherine Heigl's feature acting debut!!

Today, Tegan and Sara released their new music video for "I Was a Fool."  It's their third single off their seventh studio album Heartthrob; the first two being "Closer" and "Now I'm All Messed Up."  First premiering on, the video stars Mae Whitman (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and is directed by Shane Drake, who also directed Paramore's "Decode" and Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" videos.

"The video is a simple look at one person’s journey through the emotions of a break up," Tegan and Sara says about the vid. "We’ve all slalomed through the mass of conflicting feelings post break up before, and with this video we hoped to capture some of the contrasts between resolution and regret that we all experience when we lose love."

Tegan and Sara are currently on tour through September. They return to Los Angeles when they perform two nights at The Greek Theater with Fun. on September 3rd and 4th.

It's been almost a year since we last saw or even heard from Mr. Downstairs the brainchild of both Asia Whiteacre and Dani Artaud who formed the band in late 2010.   Since then, they've officially released two songs, "Legendary" which showcases their glitter-esque harmonies and beach-vibe melodies while  "Superhero Heart" shines with an electric, pop-rock dance anthem.

They've gone dark for the past year and today, they've leaked their own song and lyric video  for the sun-kissed, sweat-laced "Golden." And for a limited time, they're offering their single for free right HERE.  With this latest release, coupled with even rarer performances, Mr. Downstairs sure knows how to keep their loyal fans salivating for more.  Check out the video below along with their video for "Superhero Heart" and "Legendary" and see why 2013 may be the year Mr. Downstairs breaks out in a big way.

This week, Nico Vega finds their way atop Billboard's Next Big Sound Chart.  The Next Big Sound Chart shows the 15 fastest accelerating artists across the internet most likely to become the next big sound.
This isn't surprising. Nico Vega, fronted by Aja Volkman has been on the rise in the Los Angeles music scene. Now they're gaining recognition on the national level. Earlier in the year, they released their 6-track EP in February  with their single "Fury Oh Fury" featured on the latest BioShock Infinite commercial.  Currently in the middle of their tour supporting Imagine Dragons, Nico Vega is set to release their full-lenth album We Are the Art this summer.

Cat video Fridays!!  Cat vids never get old.  Neither does Sara Radle and her music.  I've always loved Sara Radle who seems to bleed creativity by cranking out song after song.  The thing is - her songs are always great.  They're catchy with bouncy melodies which you'll find humming to yourself later in the day.

Today, we found a video that blends two of our favorite things in the world! Cats and Ms. Radle, who we've been following since her days fronting Calamity Magnet and later The Walking Sleep.  The hardest working gal in LA's music scene, she now has a new band called Sara Radle and the Mockingbirds who head out on their mini-tour of Japan this June.  Anyways, the song is called "There's A Change" and it's off her 2012 solo album Same Sun Shines

The Nearly Deads perform at On the Rox in West Hollywood.

Last month, 1888 Media got me hooked to the aggressive-rock sounds of The Nearly Deads, the Tampa, Florida group fronted by the explosive, fire and ice, grunge princess Theresa Jeane. Their zombie-epic anthem "Never Look Back" boasts over 4 million YouTube views. They stopped by The Roxy on the Rox during their West Coast leg of their tour.   Check out the rockin' apocalyptic review at 1888 Media below:

"Tick tick BOOM! The Nearly Deads leveled the room!
Mortal combat unleashed by commanding officers of guitar, Steve Tobi and Brandon Barnes, bassist Kevin Koelsch, drummer Cory Walen and the inimitable Theresa Jeane (TJ), vocal priestess and shining star."

Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira performs at The Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles on April 10, 2013.
photos by picksysticks
It’s only been six months since Sky Ferreira performed for the very first time ever; that  was at The Bootleg Bar, the smaller wing of the Bootleg Theater venue that only holds 250 people.  Last night, Sky returned to The Bootleg, which sold out; the venue promptly moving her show to the much larger Theater which holds about 500 and adding a second night (tonight).

Since then, she’s moved to New York, made her television debut on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and became the new face of Forever 21’s “The Festival 2013 Capsule Collection.  And recently, she just came off performing at South By Southwest where she battled laryngitis.

Performing live for only a few months, you can still sense Sky’s nervous energy in her performance but being only 17 years of age, that’s something she’ll start to get used to pretty quick. She’s been constantly touring in preparation of the release of her debut album I’m Not Alright expected to drop later this year.

Last night, sportin' a new short pixie-cut, she showcased what that album will sound like - catchy hooks and melodies in songs like “You’re Not The One” and “Red Lips” to the vulnerable, dark melodies in “Sad Dreams” and “Werewolf.”  She even sang “Happy Birthday” to one of her friends and previewed some new songs such as “24 Hours” and “Can’t Say No.”

Sky Ferreira plays again tonight at The Bootleg Theater. She goes on at 10 pm.  Tickets are still available right HERE

Bootleg Theater Setlist 4-10-13: Lost / Ain’t Your Right / Werewolf / Can’t Say No / Red Lips / Sad Dreams / You’re Not The One / Ghost / 24 Hours / I Will Always Love You / Everything is Embarrassing

Chvrches, recently playing at SXSW.
This made my day; converging one of my favorite bands with one of my favorite shows. Check out Chvrches' electro-pop version of HBO's hit show Game of Thrones.  I'm addicted to both.

Here's their music video for their hit single "Recover" off their newest EP.

“...refreshingly sincere new-wave-style mood pop." - Time Out New York

Check out MS MR's new video for "Hurricane," the first single off their upcoming debut album Secondhand Rapture which drops May 14th on Columbia Records.

It's a  look at suburban youth's wicked and otherwordly experiences. It was directed by Luke Gilford and filmed in Southern California.  Dark and ominous, this band consisting of Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow,  layers dark, moody atmospherics with ominous, melodic echoes.

Recently, MS MR was recently responsible for adding their song "Bones" to the season three trailer of my favorite show "Game of Thrones" and are currently on tour supporting Jessie Ware.  Next month, they head off for their first headlining tour of the U.S. and in July, they begin their European tour.

Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes
Clairy Browne and The Bangin' Rackettes perform at Central SAPC in Santa Monica.

U.S. audiences are finally able to see the latest sensations from Australia - Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes, whose criticaly acclaimed debut album Baby Caught the Bus was named "Album of the Year" by ABC Radio National in their native Australia.  Now, that same album will finally get its North American release on May 21 from U.S. label Vangaurd Records.

Most recently, Clairy Browne & The Bangin' Rackettes have caused quite a stir after launching their U.S. tour at Austin's SXSW with press and audiences praising their performance.

Clairy Browne and the Bangin' Rackettes put on a fresh twist on the classic doo-wop harmonies by fusing them with breathless beats of soul and jazzy melodies. And with the nostalgic big band sound that includes the jazzy horn section and free-wheeling pianos, it's no wonder why Clairy Browne has been a sensation in her native Australia.

Soulful vocals that bring up comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Browne's voice is also spiced up with flirtatious rockness that gets crowds  dancing especially in songs like  "Baby Caught the Bus,"  an infectious tune set to the The Rackettes' silky, smooth harmonies while  "Love Letter," the international hit single which was hand-picked by Heineken for their commercial "The Switch."  But Browne shines when she slows down the tempo during her sultry ballads, singing with proud, vulnerability in  "Vicious Cycle" and "Yellow Bird," accented by bluesy horn section.

Be sure to catch them when they hit West Hollywood's Troubadour on April 9th which will be taped for  "Last Call with Carson Daly." .  The rest of their tour dates are below.  Also, check out the official music video below for their hit song "Love Letter."

Even before their Recover EP was released last week, Chvrches has been causing quite a buzz lately.  Packing venues on their first North American tour and recently being honored with the first annual  Grulke Prize for Best Non-US act at SXSW, they've just sold out their June 1st show at The Troubadour in mere minutes of tickets going on sale.  Now, for those hungry for more, Chvrches has released a new video for their single "Now Is Not The Time," filmed in a makeshift roller rink for Pitchfork TV.
