It was a great year in music. We saw a lot of great bands, even seeing some artists finally getting noticed in the mainstream media who, just earlier in the year, were playing in smaller venues here in Los Angeles.  From Naia Kete performing on 3rd Street Promenade and Cassadee Pope performing her first solo show at The Key Club, NBC's The Voice made them household names.  Carly Rae Jepsen even played a free show at CityWalk's 5 Towers before she became one of the most covered artists on YouTube.  We saw great up and coming bands sure to make it big in 2013 like Kitten, The Balconies, Foxes and Sky Ferriera  and we caught great bands performing during some of this countries biggest music festivals such as Grouplove, Best Coast, The Cults  and Grimes to name a few.

After seeing all the shows we went to this year, I realized that I didn't go to enough shows! So I'm looking to make 2013 the biggest and best year yet!  Happy new year music lovers!

KREWELLA headlines CONTROL Fridays at The Avalon.
photos by picksysticks
What began late Friday, admist cloud and smoke, laser-cut by fine beams of light that danced with the hordes of kids in darkness wanting to party continued into the wee hours of Saturday morning. But the only silhouettes that mattered this night only became visible through quick bursts of bright strobes that played peek-a-boo to the electronic beats and  scratchy, deep drops of dubstep.

Last time I saw Krewella perform in Los Angeles in June, they had just released Play Hard, their chart-topping debut EP and performed at the small and intimate club Dim Mak Studios in Hollywood. Last night, a year later, they return with a new EP, Play Harder while headlining a sold out show at The Avalon. It's been a sky-rocketing rise for the trio, from playing small clubs to today where they now fill venues with over 2,000 capacity.

The Avalon this night was turned into one gigantic electro-fest as it hosted CONTROL Fridays, one of the biggest EDM parties on the West Coast.  Blending nu-electro, techno and house music CONTROL has introduced an entirely new legion of fans to dance music, and bloods some of the freshest and most exciting DJs and producers every week. This night, lines stretched blocks to catch Chicogoans Flosstradamus and Krewella and Run DMT from Austin, Texas.

Krewella, comprised of sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf and Rain Man  are turning heads with their unique and contagious style of EDM, infusing pop melodies over female vocals laced with blaring bass and electro beats.  Their high-energy set made the Avalon floor look like one large sound wave, swelling up and down.  And with pulsating beats as hard and heavy along with their electrifying stage presence,  hits like "Play Hard" and "Killin' It" kept the crowd bumpin' and bodies sweatin'. The sister DJs even got to jumping onto their EDM table and dancing in front of the sold out Avalon.

10 months ago, they closed out Control at 3 am. In less than a year, they are now headlining.  What a difference a year makes.  I'll be the first to admit I'm not an EDM aficionado. What first peaked my interest was their single "Killin' It" which broke out in a big way via Facebook and Twitter.  Since then, I've been a big fan and credit them for turning me on to electric dance music.   Their newest EP, Play Harder drops Monday, Dec. 10th and features remixes of their early hit songs like "Killin It" and "Alive."  "Come and Get It" is their newest hit single to dominate the dance airwaves.

"Bitter" by Midian
Midian's single "Bitter" is the breakout hit off her self-titled EP which drops January 8th.  Powerful yet soulful vocals layered with vulnerable melodies, "Bitter," with nearly half a million YouTube views, climbed the music charts reaching #6 on iTunes' R&B charts while reaching #1 on Amazon's charts and prompting fans on social media to make their own fan vids featuring the hit single.

Now, with the success of "Bitter," Midian has released a live studio video of the song via Captured in one take, the song showcases Midian's strength and raw vocal talent. Midian's voice is massive; the kind of voice that makes the hairs on your arms stand at attention and swallows you up whole. In it you can hear the soulful stylings of the late Etta James and the outsize "wow factor" of contemporary artists like Christina Aguilera. You can check it out below.

Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira performs at Los Angeles' Bootleg Theater back in September.

A model. An actress and a singer.  Sky Ferreira's talent is endless. She is paving her own path and forging ahead to carve out her own identity.  She's bloggers best kept secret, managing to  secure nearly 100,000 Facebook likes and over 140,000 Twitter followers without releasing a formal debut album. And she's done it without the help of MTV or radio.  What Sky has done is create a buzz that surrounds her wherever and whenever she plays. Rare shows that pop up, seemingly to test out new singles and gage crowd reactions.  At The Bootleg Theater last September, it was to play with a full band for the very first time ahead of her coming out performances at New York's CMJ Music Festival.

Sky had planned to release of her debut album two years ago but the idea was scrapped in order to focus on a new music direction, away from the direction that originally saw her in a Katy Perry/Britney bubble-gum, pop mold.  Since then, and with an announced debut album dropping in 2013, Sky has premiered videos off her Ghost EP, including the fuzzy-sythned pop "Everything is Embarrassing" as well as the vulnerable, acoustic ballad "Sad Dreams."  Check them out below!

The Troubadour: KARMIN performs their first headlining show in Los Angeles.

Thanks to GuerrillaNights for inviting me to The Troubadour to catch Karmin's sold out show.  I know the name but hardly know much about them but for their quick rise to stardom via YouTube and known for their rapid, machine-gun rapping delivery.   After last Thursday's show, I'm now a converted fan. it was their first ever headlining show in Los Angeles and they made the most of it busting out cover favorites and brand new songs like "BOOM," a pop-tastic tune layered with industrial guitars and looming keys.  Amy called out to fans to help her sing favorite hits like "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People and even brought up a fan to help her with cover Chris Brown's "Look At Me Now."  Although they made a name for themselves singing covers, heightened with performances on Saturday Night Live, Ellen and Good Morning America, Karmin showed that they're more than a cover band, singing original songs like "Hello" and "Brokenhearted" which Billboard chart hits off their debut album Hello released earlier this year.

It's certainly been a breakout year so far for the Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan.  Currently, they continue a string of dates this month before peforming on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve w/Ryan Seacrest" along with Brandy, Flo Rida, One Republic and Pitbull during the West Coast festivities.

Check out more pics from this night right HERE.
