Crystal Fighters

With Carmageddon 2 nearly over here in Los Angeles, like most Angelinos, I'm spending my day at home.  In other words, it's a perfect day to catch up on listening to great bands and discovering new music.  Heaven!

So now, I bring you Crystal Fighters, a band based out of London who have garnered critical acclaim for their blending of experimental electronica with punk rock beats and the organic folk instruments of the Basque region of Spain.  Earlier this year, the made a splash in the States with a number of highly anticipated shows, including SXSW that saw the release of their first US debut EP Plage which was heralded by NME as "an irresistable whirlwind of sound...infectiously, chaotically, totally brilliant."

And currently, as they're busy recording their new album, just last week, Crystal Fighters released a remix album, Star of Love (Remixes)" which features fifteen inspired interpretations of seven original tracks by Passion Pitt, Disclosure and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

Check out "At Home" below, remixed by Passion Pitt and then a live performance of "At Home" in Spain of last year.

Sick/Sea debut EP Moral Compass drops October 16th.

I highly recommend this song from Sick/Sea. These  indie-rockers are currently offering it as a FREE download on RCRD LBL and it's off their debut EP Moral Compass via Autumn + Colour Records which drops October 16th.

Fronted by Audrey Scott, Sick/Sea fuses bouncy melodies into their indie-pop, jazzy arrangements  But it's Audrey's fresh vocals that shines with this group from small town McAllen, Texas who have created their own sound that's refreshingly contagious.

They've just been recently added to perform at this years' CMJ next month at New York City's Lit Lounge.  Be sure to get your free download of "Robot" right HERE.

Cassadee Pope auditions for NBC's The Voice
Cassadee Pope performs at The El Rey in Los Angeles with her former band Hey Monday.

Tonight on The Voice (U.S.) we finally got the pleasure of seeing former lead singer of Hey Monday, Cassadee Pope perform during the blind auditions.

She was the last performer of the night and she wowed the judges by singing  "Torn"  by Ednaswap which was most famously covered by Natalie Imbruglia in 1997.  Cassadee's rendition of the song got all four judges to press their button.  Adam, Christina and Blake pushed their buttons within the first 30 seconds with Cee Lo pressing his button towards the end.  It was a fight to get Pope on their team was on with each judge pleading their case.

Cassadee Pope rose to fame fronting the West Palm Beach band, Hey Monday, singing hits like "Wish You Were Here," "I Don't Wanna Dance" and "Candles" before leaving the group last year and move to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career.  Earlier this year, she released her self-titled EP and set out on her first ever solo tour.

Christina Aguilera opened up and Pope had a little country, pop and rock and said she could do it all and told Pope she knew how to make a solo career happen while season one winning coach, Adam gushed how honored it would be to have her on his team saying, "I already know what to do with you."

But it was last year's champion, Blake Shelton who won her over when he said, "There's nobody else like you. I believe with 200% of my heart that you Cassadee Pope are a superstar."

She'll be joining a team that currently consists of Terry McDermott, Gracia Harrison, Casey Muessigmann, Julia Cesar Castillo, 2 Steel Girls, Liz Davis, Kelly Crapa, Suzanna Choffel, Terisa Griffin, Michaela Paige, Ryan Jirovec and Lelia Broussard.

"Torn" sung by Cassadee Pope during The Voice's blind auditions.

Even though former frontwoman of Hey Monday, Cassadee Pope hasn't performed yet on NBC's The Voice, it looks as though iTunes may have let slip earlier today what song she will be performing on the show.  On Cassadee Pope's iTunes page right HERE, they're already selling the single "Torn (The Voice Performance)."  And usually, The Voice sells singles only for those singers that get picked to go on a team.  So hey, this looks like good news for Ms. Pope!  Torn is by Ednaswap but it became more popular when Natalie Imbruglia covered the song in 1997.

Here's a new lyric video from Tegan and Sara. It's for their new single "Closer" and it's off their new album Heartthrob which drops January 2013.  You can now get it on iTunes right HERE.  Tegan and Sara are having a busy fall with planned tours with Black Keys and then after that,  they're out touring with The Killers on both their European and North American Tour beginning in late October.

Official lyric video for Closer, the new single from Tegan and Sara. Available on iTunes now in most territories.

THE INDECENT @ The Viper Room

The Indecent's Bo and Emily Brout
The Indecent's Bo and Emily Brout perform at The Viper Room.

Heavy guitars and growling vocals doesn't sound unique but in the hands of  The Indecent?  It's literally like listening to love songs for a bleeding heart.  Comprised of siblings Emily Brout (vocals), Maddy Brout (bass), Bo Brout (guitar) and Nicholas Burrows (drums) this quartet from Brooklyn are probably too young to even remember the musical environment in the mid-90's when it seemed music, in that era, defined a generation.

The Indecent's Maddy Brout
Maddy of The Indecent
I'm careful not to mention the "G-word" to describe their sound, but they do simply say they're influenced by "Seattle-type things."  But underneath Emily's raspy and yearning growls are desolate melodies that have a raw sincerity evoking Mazy Star-like vulnerabilities with the hard-edge attitude of L7.

Just releasing Control, their EP from Warner Bros. Records, The Indecent thundered into The Viper Room on the famed Sunset Strip Tuesday night.  Seemingly shy and reserved, The Indecent shines without the flashiness, their commanding presence only heightened when they broke into the thundering "25 Steps" and then creeping into the bruising slow strokes of "Hear Comes Another," which, when sung by Emily, has the distinct vibe of  Courtney Love's Hole while "Lucky One's" had flavors of the tormented vocals of Love's famous significant other. But it was their closer, the rock ballad, "Hear Them Fear Them," that hit hardest, emotionally resonating inside the packed Viper Room. A  song delivered over soaring melodies that slowly builds  with clobbering beats and ending with a classic rock, guitar assault.

In today's radio airwaves,  bombarded by sugary pop melodies, EDM flashiness and bubblegum punk, it's refreshing when a young band injects something refreshing while also writing songs with thought-provoking lyrics. The Indecent heads over to perform at the very first Vans Warped Tour across the pond in London in November.  And you can grab their EP Control right HERE!

Although Joy Formidable's newest album, Wolf's Law, won't be released until January 2013, that's not stopping this trio from the UK from teasing us with new songs.  In the past two months, they've already released two singles off their upcoming album.  In August it was the title track "Wolf's Law" and last week, they released "Cholla."

Wolf's Law, which was recorded up in Portland, Maine, is the follow up to their hit debut album Big Roar that even had Foo Fighters' front-man David Grohl singing their praises, going as far as calling "Whirring," their hit single, the best song of 2011.  Check out the first two official videos below.

Young London's Sarah and Matt
Young London's Sarah and Matt performs at this years' Warped Tour.
Last we saw this Bostonian-EDM duo, they were performing a visual, silent dream, raving to an unheard beat as part of Warped Tour's first Silent Disco.  Wireless headphones slipped on opening up a world that is Young London - a scene blaring alive as if diving into a pool of sound with Sarah Graziani's lush vocals backed by Matt Rhodes' pop-dance, electro and dubstep beats.

Now, fresh off Warped Tour, Young London are ready to kick off their "Let Me Go Tour," their first headlining tour, on September 21st beginning in their hometown Boston.  And to celebrate, Sarah and Matt just released their newest single "Call My Name (Tonight)" which is part of their upcoming EP.  Check it out below!

Young London released their dance-inducing, explosive self-titled debut album on January 10th. Hit songs up the wah-hoo, they wowed with hits like "Celebrity" and "New Reputation" at SXSW and their video for "Let Me Go" have amassed over 100,000 views since it was released earlier this year. Super Water Symphony
Super Water Symphony

After a successful run with the highly coveted Warped Tour and a summer of recording in London with Cam Blackwood (Florence + The Machine, Coldplay, Morrissey), Louisiana "Water Pop" phenoms Super Water Sympathy have emerged with "Uh Oh", the newest pop/rock single from their upcoming album, due soon. Available immediately for streaming HERE (seriously, check it out!!!) and for download on iTunes on October 10, 2012 the single gives fans a chance to dip their toes in the water of the band's self made genre described as "a synthesis of classic symphonic ambience with modern ethereal anthems".

Super Water Sympathy released their debut album, Vesper Belle in 2011 and recently lent their writing and production skills to B.O.B's Strange Clouds with the track "Chandelier". Formed in 2010 and consisting of brothers Billy and Clyde Hargrove (bass and guitar, respectively), Ryan Robinson (drums), Jason Mills (keys), and Ansley Hughes (vocals), the group clicked from the start, sharing a similar vision of the sound they wanted to create. By fostering and combining their individual strengths, they’ve produced an impressionable and unforgettable music experience like no other.

The band will hit the road, yet again this Fall on a nationwide quest. Catch them when they hit Los Angeles' Viper Room on November 16th.

Cassadee Pope auditions on The Voice
Cassadee Pope auditions for The Voice

Judging from the season three premiere of NBC's The Voice, this season will boast the some of the best singers this country has to offer.  Tonight had a a few people I think could win it all at the end of the season but we're waiting for some local favorites that still haven't sang yet.

For a month now, we've known that former Hey Monday frontwoman, Cassadee Pope auditioned for The Voice via her Facebook page and tonight we finally got to see her performance...well sort of.  Season 3 of The Voice premiered tonight and, although Cassadee didn't perform, we did get a glimpse of her during the intro during the first 3 minutes and a shot of her tearing up which could mean a couple of things - likely she got picked to a team or was the bearer of bad news. We'll just have to wait and see. Unfortunately, we won't know what day she'll be on but we should watch anyways just because this show is so darn good!!

Tune in Tuesday AND Wednesday for more blind auditions on NBC.

Locals and tourists alike took advantage of the free coffee and espressos provided by Coffee Bean, Beers and specialty drinks by "Sonoma on the Deck" and Cerveza Pacifico Clara and emceed by KCRW's Gary Calamar.  In it's 28th year hosting this concert series, this event saw acts like HAIM, Kasey Chambers and Jackie Greene with musical genres spanning pop, rock, world music and folk/country.

SKY FERREIRA @ The Bootleg Theater

Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira performs at The Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles.

Model/singer, Sky Ferreira is America's newest pop sensation even though you've never heard of her.  But judging by the internet buzz from bloggers and music websites singing her praises, Ferreira is about to take the world by storm.  Last week at The Bootleg Theater, this 20 year-old proved why she's deserving of all the hype.

Sky Ferreira
Sky Ferreira
Growing up in Los Angeles, Sky was signed to a record label at 15 and has since gained a dedicated cult following since she released her two singles "Obsession" and "One." That led talent scouts to sign her to major modeling gigs with Calvin Klein, Diesel and Adidas.

Performing ahead of a planned tour East Coast tour, Sky had planned to release of her debut album two years ago but the idea was scrapped in order to focus on a new music direction, away from the direction that originally saw her in a Katy Perry/Britney bubble-gum, pop mold.  Now she returns with a more new wave, electro-pop sound -songs that have a distinctly Garbage-esque vibe delivered with the supple vocals of Fiona Apple.

Within the past few months, she's released a few songs "Red Lips" and "Everything is Everything" and "Lost in My Bedroom" off her just announced EP called Ghost this October 2nd.  Her full-length debut album will be released later this year.   And this night, she showcased her talents from romantic, vulnerable angst to aggressive pleasantness.

There was no mistaking the talent in Sky's rousing and performance. A surprisingly packed crowd filled the Bootleg to watch Sky's first performance with a live band. Towards the end, she shyly teared up and thanked the crowd for showing up on a Monday night. And after hearing her perform at The Bootleg Theater last Monday, her debut album will be well worth the wait.

Hot off the heels of  successfully opening up for Paramore last month at Pomona's Fox Theater, KITTEN is playing every Monday night at The Bootleg Theater as part of their free September residency. Indie darlings since bursting on the music scene at SXSW, Kitten's live and energetic sets has gained them even more fans beyond their loyal following with their dreamy-electro-pop inspired melodies.

Chloe Chaidez of KITTENChloe Chaidez of KITTEN

Their first night saw packed crowds as lead singer Chloe Chaidez performed songs off their new EP Cut It Out like "Cut It Out" and "Sugar" and also sang songs like their hit single "Kill The Light" off their debut EP Sunday School.  And as a surprise, Chloe busted out an epic, electo-rock version of Madonna's "Like A Prayer" and ended the night with their frenzied-guitar assault "Kitten with a Whip" that saw the 17-year-old frontwoman climb high up on a piano to dance and later into the crowd, dancing with the crowd and jumping on one lucky fans back.

And now, KITTEN just  released their official music video for G# off their Cut It Out EP.  Check it out below.  They continue their residency next Monday with Nova Albion, Hindu Pirates, Y Luv and Baron Von Luxxury. Again, Mondays are all free this month so check 'em out!!

Dollyrots perform at The Knitting Factory Hollywood.
Today, Artist Direct exclusively premiered The Dollyrots' new video for "Hyperactive," a song off their 4th album which drops September 18th via Storefront Records/RED.

A  'do as I say and do as I do' war cry  to live in the moment, lead singer Kelly Ogden and guitarist Luis Cabezas have unleashed a new-wave, punk song for the upcoming end of the world, sexual revolution as Kelly sings "It's our duty to shake our booties / And be fantastic but kind of tragic"  and finishing off with "All we're living for is to die / So let's enjoy the ride."  If the end of the world is upon us, as the Mayans have foreseen, this is the song I'd want to go out on!

You can catch The Dollyrots this Thursday at The Viper Room when the perform for the Free Pussy Riot Benefit with KINGQUEEN, Thorne and Mitchell Shaffer.  After this show, The Dollyrots will head out on the U.S. and European tour in support of their new album which is released on Sept. 18th.

This year's PLAY MOCA series at The Geffen Contemporary Museum saw a series of multimedia events that included music performances by IO ECHOE, Zola Jesus and Salem along with collaboration with visual artists by Drew Barrymore and Benjamin Millepied.

Presented by Smashbox Cosmetics and IAMSOUND, Play MOCA showcases the cultural vitality and diversity of the city of Los Angeles.  These events began in 2009 to attract audiences of a more diverse and broader background to the museum through music, art, film, fashion, food, dance and architecture.

“There is increasing interchange between artists, musicians, and designers. It is exciting to present these collaborative performance projects that reflect the new creative convergence in Los Angeles, ” said MOCA Director Jeffrey Deitch.

On August 24th, New York-based The Cults closed out the series that saw visuals by Emmett Malloy and a DJ set by Victoria Bergsman of Taken By Trees.

A free event, crowds came early to take advantage of drink specials while famed Kogi's food truck provided Korean bbq and ice cream sandwiches from Cool Haus food truck.

But it was The Cults that were the big draw this night.  Girl-pop 60s influenced with cool indie flavored, buzzy-reverb, The Cults, made up of Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion are still flying high off their 2011 debut album that featured their hit single "Go Outside" with a subsequent video starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco.

They launched the show to  a packed, all-ages crowd with "Abducted" with the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles lighting the sky.   Mostly performing songs off that album, The Cults also played the new song "Slow Song" as well as the Leonard Cohen cover "Everybody Knows."   Madeline ended the night bringing out her brother, finishing their set with "Go Outside" and "Oh My God."

NYC Time with Petite Meller
NYC Time with Petite Meller is her debut video from her first solo project.

It was the uniqueness of Petite Meller that gave me pause and digest, like tasting a foreign dish for the first time, slowly chewing as my palette takes notice to the unique flavors of jazzy-pop flavors swishing around my taste buds.  And I liked it. I liked it a lot.  It's fresh new sound that teases something bigger and better from Petite's upcoming album.

"NYC Time" is her debut video and this marks her first solo project after leaving her last band Terry Poison and playing in such music fests like SXSW and Rock en Seine and even performing on the same stage as Depeche Mode.

I know little of PETITE, just that according to her bio on her Facebook page, she was a model, gracing fashion iconicals (yeah...I just made up that word) such as L'Oreal and Vogue Magazine.
