Gram Rabbit
"Desperate Heart" is the new offering from Pyschedelic-rockers Gram Rabbit. These West Coast cowboys from Joshua Tree just released their new album Welcome to the Country earlier this month but this song which is featured on the new Fruit of The Loom commercial was left out of the album for licensing reasons.  Known for their surreal sounds of contrasting rhythms of lush atmospherics with dark and gloomy melodies,  "Desperate Heart" is a  sunset melody delivered over dusty guitars and soothing and lustful vocals by Jesika von Rabbit.

The band next performs at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco before heading back to So-Cal when they play San Diego's The Griffin and then The Echoplex in Los Angeles.

The Indecent

Check out
The Indecent's new song "Control" released exclusively at Nylon Magazine off their EP of the same name which will be released on September 18th. These New Yorkers who are made up of triplets Emily, Bo and Maddy Brout and Nicholas Burrows just got signed to Warner Bros. Records.  Their 5-track EP borrows the agressive sounds of rock and roll with the grinding edginess of Seattle's grunge era.

At an early age, they learned to play guitar and write their own songs, drawing inspiration from Sonic Youth, Black Sabbath and Jefferson Airplane and posting their songs online where they began to draw comparisons to Nirviana to Patti Smith.  On the strength of these demos alone the foursome toured throughout the UK, landing on the cover of British fashion mag Disorder, and recently they took the stage in New York for Joey Ramone's Annual Birthday Bash at Webster Hall.
You can download "Control" for free for a limited time on their website right HERE.  And learn more about The Indecent on their Facebook page at

By J.Pegg

Well Hung Heart has got a new single and video dropped, “Devil”.  It arrives with ferocious fury. Raise it from the flames as it will burn all their previous stuff into forgotten memories and miss tries. If you haven’t heard Greta's vaudeville opera-esque previous stuff, then don’t, just listen to this and ears forward to their debut album ahead, “Young Enough To Know It All”. This single is some good shit for radio, and not just college broadcast. Greta Valenti, lead singer, lets out lyrics as if struggling with inner frustration at her own devil that she may be, the inner blood, unable to control, sordid pent up emotional bursts. The devil twisted with redeeming heart. Add to that with Robin Davey in marvelous madness on strings with its own inner beating of a Tell-Tale Heart. “Devil” creates anticipation for the album. If the complete album consumes with emotion like this single, Well Hung Heart will be headed for a number of summer rock festivals. Catch them earlier if you can at this first spark!

HAIM (Alana, Danielle, Este)
HAIM performs at The Twilight Concert Series on the Santa Monica Pier.
photos by picksysticks

It was a family affair last Thursday on the Santa Monica Pier as sisters Alana (18), Danielle (22) and Este (24) of HAIM performed during free weekly Twilight Concert Series.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, Alana told the crowd that, while growing up, their parents would surprise the kids by taking a day-trip to the Pier.  Now, it was a dream come true to be performing on the Pier.  But it's a dream that started long ago when they were just kids, touring with their parents and playing street fairs and charities in a band called Rockinhaim.

HAIM (Alana and Danielle)HAIM (Este)

Growing up listening to their parents music, it isn't surprising that their sound echoes the classics of Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell and Smokey Robinson. But then again, they are children of the nineties which is also why you'll hear touches of rock alternative delivered over their catchy melodies producing a SoCal sound that is best described as folk with echoes of alternative and a touch of R&B.  But it's their trance-inducing percussions and silky-smooth harmonies that will make you get up on your feet and dance.

Since venturing out on their own, they've been spotlighted by ultra-cool mags such as Elle and Vogue and have received rave reviews for the Forever EP.  Their resume? Not too shabby. They've since shared the stage with the likes of KESHA, Grouplove, Cold War Kids, Bird and the Bee, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Julian Casablancas of the Strokes.

This was week three of Santa Monica's Twilight Concert Series. Already in its 28th year, these weekly concerts are always free with full service bars courtesy of "Sonoma on the Deck" where guests can enjoy a selection of specialty wine and beer. Have a picnic on the beach while listening to the show and take advantage of the free bike valets offered just south of the pier.  The concert series lasts through September with Jackie Green, Kasey Chambers and LA darlings Best Coast scheduled to perform in the upcoming dates.

HERE for more info and to see the series lineup.  And check out more photos from Haim's show on the Santa Monica Pier in our photo gallery HERE.

Louisa Rose Allen of Foxes
Foxes' Louisa Rose Allen ends her U.S. tour at Los Angeles' The Bootleg Theater.
There must be something in the water across the pond. They've given us the likes of Florence and the Machine, Adele and Amy Winehouse. Now, a new voice has emerged, grabbing critical acclaim with her own soaring vocals and catchy melodies led by the advancing, throbbing beats of her industrial percussions.

Foxes' Louisa Rose AllenHer name is Louisa Rose Allen, also known as Foxes and hails from Southampton. Fresh off her surprise and much-talked about single "Youth", Foxes just released her second EP called Warrior (released July 1st from Neon Gold Records) and completed her first U.S. tour with two shows in Los Angeles at Bardot Hollywood and The Bootleg Theater in Downtown L.A.

It was the Bootleg Theater where we caught the 22-year-old songstress. Don't let her petite stature fool you. She has a voice that leaps the tallest mountains and lifts over oceans. Entrancing and often times hypnotic, Foxes music is brushed with vibrant synths and catchy harmonies.

Her eagerly awaited Warrior EP focuses on minimal instrumentals that better serves to showcase Allen's soaring vocals. Themes of overcoming the darkness and following your dreams pepper the album. "Don't tell me our youth is running out/It's only just begun" she sings in "Youth" while in the title track "Warrior" she pleads "I’ll keep you safe tonight ‘cause I’m a warrior/And I’ll fight, I’ll fight, I’ll fight, I’ll fight." Home is a music box ballad, that's both playful and vulnerable at the same time and highlights that Allen can go from rising vocals to soft, tenderness in a heartbeat.

As part of music's new class of great singer/songwriters, we're sure to be hearing more from Foxes. Currently, you can download, for FREE, her single "White Coats" on her website right HERE.

2012 Nike US Open of Surfing Readies the Beach For Three Packed Nights of Music

Huntington Beach, CA – The 2012 Nike US Open of Surfing will spill over from the ocean to the sand when bands like TV on the Radio, Grouplove and Best Coast take over the Music Stage with three nights of music in front of hundreds of thousands of fans with each night being presented by a different brand: Nike, Hurley, and Converse respectively. The music stage has become one of the most anticipated programs during the Open and has grown to be the largest free concert series of the summer.

"Every year the crowd looks forward to our music series,” says James Leitz, Senior Vice President of IMG. “And every year Nike, Hurley and Converse bring the best bands to the beach during the US Open of Surfing. Music, sport, beach. What more can fans ask for?”

This year's musical line-up melds the laid back surf-vibe of rockers Best Coast with the post-punk electronic rock sound of TV on the Radio and the alternative stylings of Grouplove. The series will also include sets by emerging artists White Arrows and Hindu Pirates.

"For years my brother and I have been going to the US Open to watch the competition, so to perform and hang with the best surfers in the world is such an honor for me," said Grouplove's Andrew Wessen.

Known as the world's largest youth culture and action sports festival, the Nike US Open of Surfing will feature daily concerts Wednesday through Friday, August 1-3, at the conclusion of the surfing competition. All concerts are free and open to the public.

August 1st - Best Coast / Walk the Moon
August 2nd - Grouplove / White Arrows / Hindu Pirates
August 3rd - TV On The Radio / Toro Y Moi

Pomplamoose are Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn.

Bay Area  darlings, Pomplamoose have once again re-imagined two of this years' most-talked about pop singles mashing up Goyte's "Somebody That I Used To Know" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Mabye."  Released yesterday, it's already receieved over 65,000 hits.

Known mostly for their Christmas Hyundai car commercials, Pomplamoose has made a living making video-songs - defined as 'what you see is what you hear.'  They've garnered millions (yep you read that right – MILLIONS) of hits off their self-made videos singing cover songs of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies,” Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” while putting their Pomplamoose twist on them. Check out their YouTube page right HERE.

With all the “Call Me Maybe” covers out there, this probably has to be one of my favorites.

In this version,  LA-based Bullet & Snowfox gives it the full-on dance treatment.  More edgier than its original, adding a touch of rock and laced with their trademark EDM beats.

If you haven't caught a Bullet & Snowfox show yet, then you're missing one of the best bands in L.A.  Known for their energetic and electrifying shows, this trio is like watching someone try to catch lighting in a bottle.   You can 'try and catch' them  (haha...see what I did there?)  tonight when they perform at The Dragonfly in Los Angeles and then Hemingway’s Lounge on July 24th.

KITTEN performs at The Bootleg Theater in Downtown Los Angeles

Last month, I got a chance to catch LA-based KITTEN performing at The Bootleg Bar in support of their upcoming EP  which is slated to drop next month ahead of their January debut album.  Seriously, one of the best live acts around, lead-singer Chloe Chaidez is like watching a concert taking place in the middle of a cage fight, surrounded by a chain-link fence.

Though it's been through some member changes (a few forming Fidlar), KITTEN hasn't lost what thousands of fans loved about the band -  fuzzy-dream-pop that balances on the fragility yet frenzied vocals of Chloe.  So far they've released two singles, 'Cut It Out" and "Sugar" that showcases their psychedelic-induced melodies and mature writing style while their counterparts - pre-fabricated pre-teen bands their age are pumping out Radio Disney pop songs.

Currently, KITTEN is on their summer tour with Pomegranates which takes them through 14 cities and ends on August 4th. Check out the vid by Guerrilla Nights of KITTEN performing "Sugar."

Hayley Reardon's "Where the Artists Go"
Hayley Reardon's "Where the Artists Go"

Hailing from Boston, singer-songwriter Hayley Reardon acts and sounds much older than she actually is.  She's 15 years old and she's set to release her debut album  via Kingswood Records.

"Where The Artists Go" is a welcome and beautiful debut and the lead single off her new album of the same name that echoes the vulnerable melodies of Joni Mitchell and the world-weary balladry of Joan Baez.  Only 15 and yet she sings as though she's lived well beyond her years.  Wrapped in a wholesome arrangement of folk-rock, Reardon delivers raw sincerity in her lyrics that's more about breaking free and finding that person you were meant to be.

Right now, for a limited time,  her single,  "Where The Artists Go" is being offered up as a free download via her Bandcamp page right HERE ahead of the official release of the digital single on July 17th. Listen to the single below.

In celebration of our nation's birthday, here's "National Holiday" by Jes Hudak.  This song won her a spot to play in 2010's Lilith Fair. Her resume is impressive. Not only did she place 2nd on Bravo's singer/songwriter reality competition show "Platinum Hit" hosted by Jewel, she has been on tour and opened for acts such as Maroon 5, Tonic and Five for Fighting. She was also named ISSA's Singer/Songwriter of the Year (2009) and won Pop Single of the Year (2009) at the LA Music Awards for her original song "Another Day."

What a great way to spend an afternoon to kick off the weekend. Starting this Friday (July 6), Grand Performances, co-curated by The Satellite will begin hosting the Lunch Box Series, featuring Los Angeles' top emerging bands, from rock, pop and folk.  It takes place in Downtown Los Angeles at the California Plaza.  It's part of their ongoing events, presenting free performing arts that reflect the best of global culture and inspire community among the diverse peoples of L.A.

"Forever" by HAIM

The noon-time program which occurs every Friday for two months will feature up-and-coming bands, including some great female-fronted bands like the sisters (Danielle, Alana and Este) of  Haim, who mix percussion with dreamy pop melodies and have shared the stage with Jenny Lewis and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.  HAIM will also be performing during Santa Monica's Twilight Concert Series which is also free.

On July 13th, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down will fill the lunch-time air with their colorful and playful sounds that is often times  ecclectic and a lot of times charming.  The rest of the series features bands like the brother/sister team of The Belle Brigade, a local flavor with blue-collar folk sounds with camp-fire flavors to go with their soaring vocals.  For more info and the rest of the line-up and for more free show offerings, click HERE.
