States perform at The Roxy.

When the States took the stage at The Roxy Tuesday night, it was an accomplishment in itself.  After their first song, lead-singer Mindy White told the packed Roxy venue, she had just come out of urgent care, battling a 'nasty bug,' and at one time, blowing her nose between songs.  Earlier this week, they even had to cancel a show in San Francisco.  But even if you didn't know she was sick, you couldn't tell in her performance,  starting the night with dramatic flourish in gold, sequined leggings, backed by powerful catchy guitar riffs on their hit single "Timebomb."  And just as she shimmered onstage, her songs also, have that alt-rock glow that showcases their inventive pop harmonies, evidenced in their rock-ballad "Anxious."

Themes of love, heartbreak and self-empowerment pepper their songs, from their first 2010 EP Line 'em Up to their debut full-length album Room To Run, released last year, States uses sleek beats delivered with commanding vocals by White.  This night was no different, except, as Mindy joked, her voice may sound more weathered in a Macy Gray-like way due to her illness, making her cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" seem even more bruising but rich.

As the night progressed, Mindy seemed to get her second wind, dancing and moving to the side and front of the stage, while singing "Captivating Me" the song about being head over heals in love with someone, accompanied with chiming guitars and bouncy drumming and getting the crowd to clap in beat.  Afterwards and feeling much better, States played two more songs, instead of one, ending their set the "Can't Explain, " a song about love and magic potions and "Time To Begin," their first song they, as a band, wrote together.

States, comprised of White, Bryan Laurenson, Stephen Laurenson, Jonathan Bucklew and Dean Lorenz are getting set to re-release Room To Run on June 19th which includes 2 brand new songs as well as acoustic versions of songs and original demos.   And to celebrate, they're touring with Rocket Summer and The Scene Aesthetic for a grueling month-long, 26-city tour that began in Seattle and ends in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Tonight, they play at Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.
