SCREAMING FEMALES @ Eagle Rock Center of the Arts

Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females

They shred with precise efficiency under the blinding, siezure-astic strobes. Ordered chaos with laser sighting concentration.  Screaming Females, the New Jersey trio who has been featured on Spin Magazine and Rolling Stone brought their garage-punk wailings to the Eagle Rock Center of the Arts last Thursday and put on a show for the ages.  Tormenting Smashing Pumpkins-esque melodies sewn with sharp, Van Halen-like riffs, pint-sized front-woman Marissa Paternoster screams and thrashes without abandon.  But although it seems like they're raising anarchy onstage it's Screaming Females' sense of control that impresses most, like a well trained knife juggler, you cant' take your eyes off them - sooner or later they may draw blood.

They're currently on their West Coast leg supporting the release of their fifth studio album, Ugly, which was released earlier this month.  Tonight, they perform at Pomona's VLHS Warehouse and then play the Continental Room in Fullerton on Monday.

CHERRI BOMB and EVOLOVE @ Universal CityWalk's 5 Towers

It was the second weekend in a row that the 5 Towers concert stage drew me to Universal’s CityWalk.  Two weeks ago, it was Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen.  And last week it was a double-billing of local bands Evolove and Cherri Bomb who took the stage as part of the April Music Spotlight Series, featuring special performances by some of pop and rock’s hottest debut artists.

The 5 Towers is one of the largest free venues in the country, boasting state-of-the-art jaw-dropping sights and sounds.  5,000 LED lights encompass the 31 x 24-foot stage that features five 42-foot LED light-towers and to make sure there isn't a bad seat in the house, a large 26-foot monitor is mounted above the stage for all to see.

Cherri Bomb's Miranda Miller
Cherri Bomb's Nia Lovelis

Commanding performance delivered over head-banging tempos and shredding guitars, Cherri Bomb are past the point of trying to prove themselves.  No longer a mere curiosity act, Cherri Bomb are now creating buzz for their music rather than their youthfulness.

This year may be the break out year for Cherri Bomb, the Los Angeles quartet who have just announced they'll be performing on this year’s Warped Tour. Already seasoned tour veterans,  in their short career, they've already shared the stage with the likes of Foo Fighters, Filter and Smashing Pumpkins and have also played some of the top music festivals in the world including Sunset Strip Music Festival, Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, SXSW and the upcoming Bamboozle.  This summer, their single "Shake the Ground" is going to be appearing on Marvel's The Avengers soundtrack alongside Soundgarden, Bush and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots.  And next month, on May 15th, Cherri Bomb releases their debut album "The End of Control."  Not bad for the band considering they're not even old enough to drink yet.

Evolove performs at 5 Towers Citywalk
photos by picksysticks
Earlier in the night, Evolove, the five-piece band fronted by Lucy Levinsohn showed why they're one of the best live acts in town.  And unlike the constrained stage of smaller venues, the openness of CityWalk's 5 Towers suits the pop-core band's arena-ready songs.  But the heart of the band  shines in their vulnerable melodies.  When they tone it down in songs like "Four Walls " and "Let Me In" you get to see that this band is more than just a hard-pop-core band. They have range and can veer from electric-power-guitar-assault to soft-acoustic-strumming. Maybe that's why they're readying future acoustic shows just in time to promote the release of their upcoming acoustic called Acoustic Sessions Vol. 1.   But until then, you can catch Evolove when they next perform at The Roxy May 7th with Lacey Conner and We Are The Riot.

Carly Rae Jepsen

Canadian pop-crooner Carly Rae Jepsen's catchy single "Call Me Maybe" has been certified platinum in the U.S. selling 1.2 million singles.  The third place runner-up in 2005's Canadian Idol, Jepsen's hit single was already a number #1 hit in her native country. It hit #1 on the iTunes singles charts in at least five countries including the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and has cracked the top 5 on the U.S. iTunes chart.

"Call Me Maybe" skyrocketed to international chart-topper after fellow Canadian, Justin Bieber tweeted about the song in conjuction with uploading  a YouTube video as he lip-sync'd to the song with girlfriend Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale.  That video raked in over 34 million hits while Jepsen's official video for "Call Me Maybe" attracted just over 30 million.  Last week, thousands turned out for Carly Rae Jepsen's  her first U.S. concert at Universal's CityWalk 5 Towers.

And just last month, Ryan Seacrest announced Carly will be playing at the annual 102.7 KIIS FM's Wango Tango on May 12th at L.A.'s Home Depot Center. Check out more pics on our Flickr page right HERE.

Delta Rae
Delta Rae are Brittany Hölljes, Ian Hölljes, Eric Hölljes, Elizabeth Hopkins, Mike McKee and Grant Emerson.

Known for their exciting live performances, selling out shows and performing at this years' SXSW, Delta Rae's pure sounds of Americana is what legendary A&R scout Seymore Stein loved about the Durham, North Carolina natives when he signed them to Warner Bros. Records.

"Their music, all original, is a mix of blues, country and gospel with a strong rock and roll influence," said Stein who also helped launched the careers of Ramones, Talking Heads, The Smiths and The Pretenders. "I hate labels, but if forced I would have to call their music 'Original Americana,' not unlike what the English are sending over via Mumford & Sons and others.  I'm very proud to welcome Delta Rae to Sire."

Comprised of siblings Brittany, Ian and Eric Hölljes along with Elizabeth Hopkins, Mike McKee and Grant Emerson, Delta Rae will release their debut album Carry The Fire on June 19th, the same day they plan to have their album release party at the famed Troubadour in Los Angeles.

And for a limited time, you can head over to to get a FREE download of their single "Bottom of the River" as well as a FREE live album by simply giving them your email.

With the popularity of boy bands hitting the airwaves – One Direction, Midnight Red, and The Wanted to name a few, it’s only fair that girls get in on the action. Enter Blush, an all-girl pop group that has been topping Billboard’s charts since invading U.S. shores last year. They made history when their songs "Dance On" and "Undivided" placed in the top 3 of Billboards's Dance/Club chart making this group the only Asian artists to have their first two singles hit the Top 10 on a U.S. music chart.

Consisting of Victoria, Natsuko, Angeli, Ji Hae and Alisha, this quintet who blends a mixture of pop, R&B and hip hop into their infectious dance songs, have shared the stage and performed with Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas and Jessie J.

Now, on May 10th, the international quintet will release their The Undivided, a nine-track EP that features previously unreleased originals like “All Stars,” “Warrior,” and “Sweetly Leave Me,” and features a cameo from Snoop Dogg on their hit single “Undivided.” And next Wednesday, they will release their new video for “All Stars” which will surely be playing in every clubs this spring.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN'S FIRST U.S. CONCERT @ Universal's CityWalk's 5 Towers

In her first ever concert in the United States, breakout pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen made her debut a memorable one in front of thousands of fans who packed Universal Studios' CityWalk. It was part of April's free Music Spotlight Series at 5 Towers that features emerging and Marquee artists. Saturday night included a DJ Dance Party playing Top 40 hits from radio station KIIS 102.7 as well an opening act by L.A. boy band Midnight Red. But it was Carly Rae Jepsen that brought the crowd out to brave the cold, crisp Hollywood weather playing a 30-minute set that ended with her hit "Call Me Maybe."

26-year-old Carly Rae Jepsen was already a star in her hometown in Canada. She finished in the top 3 on Canadian Idol in 2007 and released her debut album Tug of War in which two songs "Bucket" and "Tug of War" went gold. Carly had already released her follow-up called Curiosity in February, her first EP that saw her lead single "Call Me Maybe" reach the top spot on the Canadian Hot 100, a feat only five other Canadians have accomplished including Avril Lavigne and Nelly Furtado. Now, all she needed was that little extra push to launch her into superstardom. Enter fellow Canadian Justin Bieber who tweeted that "Call Me Maybe" was 'possibly the catchiest song I've ever heard.' One week later, after Jepsen's song hit #1, Bieber posted a YouTube video with girlfriend Selena Gomez and Ashley Tisdale singing and dancing to "Call Me Maybe." 30 million hits later, Carly Rae Jepsen is a certified superstar, being the first artist to be singed by Schoolboy Records which is run by Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun. This week, it hit #10 on Billboards Hot 100 chart, #6 on the Digital Download Chart and #5 on iTunes' Singles Chart and has sold over 700,000 singles in just 6 weeks in the U.S. along.

And just last month, Ryan Seacrest announced Carly will be playing at the annual 102.7 KIIS FM's Wango Tango on May 12th at L.A.'s Home Depot Center.

Jes Hudak
Jes Hudak performs at Lilith Fair in Irvine, California (2010).

We first fell in love with Jes Hudak when we heard her song "National Holiday" which won a local talent search which got her a spot to play in 2010's Lilith Fair. Her resume is impressive. She's been on tour and opened for acts such as Maroon 5, Tonic and Five for Fighting. Jes was also named ISSA's Singer/Songwriter of the Year (2009) and won Pop Single of the Year (2009) at the LA Music Awards for her original song "Another Day." After that, she was a contestant on the singer/songwriter reality competition show "Platinum Hit" hosted by Jewel on Bravo where she placed in the top 3.

Jes was recently based in Los Angeles but moved back to her hometown in New York. But we still love her and apparently Australia LOOOOVES her a lot also!!! One of the songs she sings "Different Worlds" has risen in the iTunes Australia chart, currently resting at #11, after it was used in a commercial for "The Voice: Australia." Woo-hoo. I thought The Voice U.S. had really cool judges. Check out the judges they have in Australia - Joel Madden, Seal, Keith Urban and Delta Goodrem. Listen the song and commercial below!!

Los Angeles-based singer Helena just signed a record deal with Warner. Bros.
pic via facebook

A little bit of rock, a little bit of jazz and a whole lot of soul. LA-based singer Helena has just been signed to Warner Bros. Records. Discovered by former American Idol judge and current WBR SR. VP of A&R Kara DioGuardi, Helena was born in India and was raised in rural Pennsylvania before moving out to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of playing music.

"Helena's songs are a kind of hypnotic, melodic poetry. She paints pictures and evokes moods with her lyrics," says DioGuardi. "I believe she is one of the most talented artists out there today."

Helena's debut album will drop later this year. But before that, Helena will have a three-day Thursday residency at Hollywood's Hotel Cafe this June. After that, she's scheduled to perform at this year's Lollapalooza on the BMI stage in Chicago this August.

Upcoming live dates are as follows:
6/7 - The Hotel Cafe (Hollywood)
6/14 - The Hotel Cafe (Hollywood)
6/21 - The Hotel Cafe (Hollywood)
8/3-8/5 - Lollapalooza (Chicago)

Marina and the DiamondsMarina and the Diamonds

Here's "Lies" one of the first songs off Marina and the Diamonds' new album Electra Heart which drops April 30th. She's already released a few singles off her new album including "Primadonna" and "Homewrecker" which you can download for free (for a limited) time on her website right HERE.

'Electra Heart', a stunningly ambitious, seamless, cohesive and confident sonic pulsar spinning between electro-pop euphoria and come-down melancholia. The songs, mostly recorded in L.A in 2011, were written on-the-road through America in 2010, teased into life on Marina's œ100 keyboard or sung into her lap-top in the back of her tour-bus bedroom, "watching the corn fields flying by and making sense of the message that American culture employs; that you can be anyone and do anything, go anywhere and lose yourself- start afresh and forget whatever the truth is". The song titles tell the story - from throbbing first single 'Primadonna' (set for release April 16th) to the robo-pop of 'Bubblegum Bitch' to the haughty spoken-word soliloquies of 'Homewrecker' - a fantasy roll-call of "fairly vengeful characters". --

Fronted by Marina Diamandis, Marina and the Diamonds' growing U.S. fan-base was apparent when she sold out her Los Angeles show at the Troubadour and later, crowded the stage at 2010's Lilith Fair in Irvine, California. Her critically acclaimed album The Family Jewels exploded onto Billboard's 'Top new Artist Albums' chart at #2 two years ago and had been certified gold in the United Kingdom.

Next month, Marina and the Diamonds begins her own headline tour and then in May, supports Coldplay. And Angelinos will be able to catch her when she performs at The Fonda on July 10th.

"I Am Not A Robot" is still one of my favorite songs that came out of her top 5 debut The Family Jewels. You can check it out below.

Dead Sara

photos by picksysticks

If last week's Vans Warped Tour kick-off party was a preview of what is to expect for this summer, then this summer's tour is going to be one of the best in recent memory. Announced performers performed at a special kick-off party at Los Angeles' Club Nokia last TDead Sara's Emily Armstronghursday with L.A.'s own Dead Sara playing a rousing set that also included performances by Falling In Reverse, Matt Toka and Forever Came Calling. The night also included surprise performances by two iconic Vans Warped Tour veterans The Used and Ryan Key of Yellowcard.

Earlier in the night, press gathered for a press conference which included an introduction by Warped producer and founder Kevin Lyman where he introduced bands playing on the tour with a big announcement that Warped Tour will head across the pond to London for the first time.

Also, a special screening of "No Room for Rockstars" from Stacy Peralta and the producers of Dogtown and Z Boys before the concert featuring Forever Came Calling. The band who, after selling their cds and performing in the parking lots hopign to be discovered during the Warped Tour, finally gets their turn to shine on this year's tour.

Of course, Warped Tour has been responsible for introducing unknown bands to the mainstream such a No Doubt, Paramore and Katy Perry. This year's tour, unlike any other, will feature a strong contingency of women-fronted bands that look to Warped to get them to the next level. Who will stand out at this years' festival? L.A. rockers Dead Sara, Neo Geo & Cherri Bomb, hip-hop artist Justina, Warped vets Eyes Set to Kill, Australia punk-rockers Tonight AliEmily Armstrong of Dead Sarave, The Fab Rudies, Sick of Sara and Poughkeepsie New York's very own We Are the In Crowd are a few of the girl-fronted bands that look to stand out in this male-dominated lineup.

On the heels of their hit single, "Weatherman," 2012 looks to be Dead Sara's breakout year after years of toiling away on L.A.'s club scene. Not only have they played at last month's South By Southwest Music and Film Festival, they plan to use their previously announced tours with Chevelle starting April 13 and The Used starting May 12th as preparation for their 40+ dates on Warped. And in what has to be one of the longest debut album release teases in history, Dead Sara reminds us why good things come to those who wait. A planned release last August was pushed back to October and then finally drops April 10th through Fontana/Universal by way of their own record label Pocket Kid Records.

"We were trying to make it right" says guitarist Siouxsie Medley. "We started our own record label and wanted to make the album right, building our team around it so we can achieve what we wanted to."

And waiting seems to be the right decision for Dead Sara. Not only has their debut single "Weatherman" becoming the #1 most requested song at college radio stations across the country, Dead Sara has gotten the seal of approval from rocker legends Grace Slick and Courtney Love and was recently profiled by Rolling Stone dubbing the band as the "L.A. quartet poised to breakout nationally." They will make their first late-night appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live on June 7th.Rapper Justina

As for playing on a tour dominated by men? No worries from Dead Sara. "We're just going to play and do what we do."

"I just think if you're female and you've got the right swag and the right music you're going to stick out even more. So I look at anything that could be a con and make it a pro." says rapper Justina. "I think it's so dope that Kevin incorporated more female acts this year and I just think it's a great thing. I'm so blessed to be rocking with all the other talented artists and to have this opportunity."

Also on hand this night, all the way from New Jersey was female rapper Justina who will be joining the tour for the first time. And like many artists she looks to Warped to give them that big push for their career.

"I feel like Warped Tour is a right of passage. I heard it's a grueling tour and you have to put on a good show," say Justina. "I feel like if you can get through and prove yourself to the fans and you put on a dope live show, I feel like you'll gain that respect and it'll bring you to the next level."

Hip-hop artists are nothing new to Warped Tour. In the past, Eminem, Shwayze, Kid Rock and Yelawolf have graced the stage. This year, New Jersey rapper Justina will make her mark on at least seven dates on the tour. Her raw and stylish rap style infused with pop melodies has landed her songs on television shows such as NBC's "Smash," Vh1's "Mob Wives," Oxygen Network's "Runnin'Russell Simmons" and MTV's "True Life. " And later this month, Justina releases her upcoming mixtape Route 80, named after the stretch of highway that connects Jersey to California which she says holds a lot of memories for her while touring coast-to-coast early in her career. It has been a long road for Justina and finally, Justina's hard work has earned her a spot on the Alternative Press stage during the East Coast leg of the tour.

"Bubble Gum" is the first single off by Justina's mix tape Route 80.

Another L.A. based band excited to play their very first Warped Tour are L.A.-based band Cherri Bomb. Not old enough to drink, this quartet are already tour veterans playing some of the top music festivals in the world (SSMF, Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, Rock en Seine, SXSW and the upcoming Bamboozle) and opening for such powerhouse bands like Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and Filter. Their debut album This Is The End of Control drops May 15th.

Cherri Bomb
L.A. rockers Cherri Bomb (L-R: Mianda, Julia, Nia and Rena) performs 17 dates on this years' Vans Warped Tour.

Even though Warped will be their most challenging tour as this will be their longest and most grueling tour no one is complaining.

"We've always wanted to go. All our friends go and we never had the chance to but we're happy now because we get to play there," they say. "It's good to be out there. And a lot of kids in our age range who are into that kind of music come. This is the biggest festival in America."

And being an all-female band, they aren't intimidated at all touring with a bunch of guys. "We're so young and we're also girls. We kind of push the boys aside. And also, I think it's just because we're in this for real and we want to break past that mold and that stereotype that just because we're young and teenagers we're just as serious about this. We want to be on the same level as them."

With the music world just discovering Cherri Bomb, even Hollywood is starting to take notice. Their song "Shake The Ground" has been included in The Avengers movie soundtrack alongside the likes of Bush, Soundgarden, Rise Against and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots.

Warped Tour 2012 begins it's 18th year June 16th and will hit 41 cities throughout North America. Los Angelinos have four chances to catch these bands on tour when Warped stops in Irvine (June 21), Pomona (June 22), Ventura (June 24) and if you can't make those dates, your last chance, if you can make the drive is in San Diego on June 27th.
