Here’s the new single from dance-rockers Lioness. It’s called “The Night” off their upcoming album The Golden Killer which drops April 17th. The Canadian trio, fronted by Vanessa Fischer with her commanding vocal styles of Annie Lennox, weaves their sinister, electric-dance beats with clobbering flavors of hard rock with help from Ronnie Morris (bass/synths) and Jeff Scheven (drums/machines). They launch their tour next month and make their way into the States in May. And for a limited time, you can download this single for free right HERE.

And judging by their previous music videos, the video for “The Night” will be filled with dark and artistic imagery. Here’s a taste of what you should expect from their new video. It’s their video for “What You Do (Will Come Back To You)”” off their 2008 EP.

If you missed he free Dollyrots' show at The Viper Room earlier this month you can watch it below with an introduction by Rodney 'On the Roq' Bingenheimer, The Mayor of Sunset Strip. The show was super special in every way. Not only was it the debut of new drummer Alicia Warrington, it was an exclusive event as The Dollyrots unveiled and performed new songs from their upcoming fourth studio album which they're currently still recording with producer John Fields. Many in the crowd this night were fans and Kickstarter backers who helped the band fund their new record after The Dollyrots decided to leave Joan Jett's Blackheart Records.

Other than women-fronted bands, those who know me understand my love for everything Hall & Oates. So when I saw this video from bay area band Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers covering Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That," I was in heaven. Not only is it a sick version of the classic tune, it was one bad ass kazoo solo.

This video is part of their Van Sessions where they've covered songs like The Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun," Madonna's "Material Girl" and Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know." Click HERE to check here more covers and original songs from this band. And Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers take their Van Sessions to Los Angeles when they perform at The Hotel Cafe on April 20th.

THE MYNABIRDS @ The Hotel Cafe

The Mynabirds' Laura Burhenn

Earlier this month at The Hotel Cafe, The Mynabirds flew into town. (haha...see what I did there!) Fronted by singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn, Mynabirds is a little bit rock, a little bit country and a whole lot of soul. She describes The Mynabirds' sound as if Neil Young was doing Motown which coincidentally he fronted a band in the 60s named Myna Birds with Rick James.

At first glance, Laura is petite and reserved, actually standing on a two-foot platform on stage during her performance. But when she sings, her powerful yet soulful voice commands every bit of Hotel Cafe's small stage. Her songs are a simmering collection of sultry melodies and hypnotic beats. Laura also performed songs off their upcoming album which have more of an upbeat flavor. Listen to their first single "Generals" and you'll definitely want to dance.

They've just announced a release date for their second album GENERALS which drops June 5th from Saddle Creek and have recently completed their midwest/west coast tour which ended with a successful showing at last weeks SXSW. Their first single "Generals" off their upcoming album of the same name is available for FREE at their website for a limited time. Just click right HERE. If you missed them this time around, look for them to tour again later this year and they hint that they may tour Europe also.

ROSIE AND ME @ The Hotel Cafe

It takes a lot for me to go out and brave sitting for hours in the L.A. traffic. So when I heard "Arrow of My Ways" from Brazilian band Rosie and Me last month I knew this was one band I didn't want to miss. The song was, for me, a great introduction to this five-piece band from Brazil.

"Arrow of My Ways" starts out with suffering acoustic strums wrapped around vulnerable vocals by lead singer Rosanne Machado. But it's her powerful yet tender lyrics that holds your attention as she sings of pain and being lost, finally finding someone to lift her up: "Like a horse you cannot break / I was restless and astray / I was meant to be alone 'till I met you" she sings on "Arrow of My Ways."

The rest of the album, also title Arrow of My Ways has tones of classic Americana with warm, folk balladry mixed in with tender, pop melodies which makes it more surprising that they hail from southern Brazil. They sound like old souls, sounding much older than they actually are, weather-beaten and lost. But there's much more to them. Drawing inspiration from their culture, Rosie and Me puts a new and refreshing spin on country-pop blending the innocence of She & Him with the soulfulness of Civil Wars. Backing up Rosanne are Ivan Camargo (acoustic guitars), Thomas Kossar (electric guitar), Guilherme Miranda (bass) and Tiago Barbosa (sticks).

Rosie and Me already has a loyal fan base after their 2010 EP Bird and Whale garnered rave reviews worldwide. Now, with the release of their debut album Arrow of My Ways earlier this year, Rosie and Me are sure to expand their following. They recently performed last week at SXSW.

The Dollyrots
The Dollyrots perform new songs of the new album at The Viper Room.
photos by picksysticks

Last Thursday, The Dollyrots held an exclusive sneak peak listening party at The Viper Room where they performed new songs off their upcoming album. It also marked the debut of newest member and drummer Alicia Warrington.

The special night started out with the Mayor of Sunset Strip, Rodney Bingenheimer, introducing the band as The Dollyrots hyped the packed crowd with the super contagious "Hyper." Their set consisted of all new songs except for "Brand New Key" and "Because I'm Awesome." And judging by their new material, The Dollyrots' new album is going to be OFF THE HOOK!

Conjuring a coastal punk feel, The Dollyrots' songs have always been loaded with catchy hooks delivered over feel good sing-along choruses. That's one staple that you can always count on the Dollyrots to deliver - carefree and soaring melodies that balance lead singer Kelly Ogden's soft, squeaky clean vocals with Luis Cabezas' assault on guitar. What I did notice was a much more softer, alt-pop glow showcased in tunes like "Time" and "Satellite." We even saw Luis take the lead vocal duties on "Interaction" with Kelly singing backup. But don't fret, The Dollyrots we fell in love with can be heard in their very buzz, punky songs "Twist" and "Wanna Go."

"Time" by The Dollyrots

It felt like a much more mature Dollyrots this night in their sound and songwriting, a trend that follows their 2010 album A Little Messed Up, their last with Joan Jett's Blackheart Records before deciding to go and release their new album independently with the help of their fans via Kickstarter back in September. Now, The Dollyrots are set to release their fourth album LP with producer John Fields VERY SOON. If you missed them last week, The Dollyrots will be playing March 30th at The Madhaus in Long Beach. Be there! I may just make the drive myself and now that I know most of the words (thanks youtube), I can now sing along!!

Later in the night, Queen Caveat performed a rousing set with ABC News cameras filming the entire performance for an upcoming feature of the band in a 2-hour documentary titled "Sunset Boulevard" which is set to air in the spring this year on 20/20. Known for their adrenalin-fueled live performances, Queen Caveat, let by front-woman Lauren Little grew a wide following after gaining rave reviews from their successful debut EP Emptor and performing to packed crowds at venues all over Los Angeles including The Roxy and The Viper Room. Earlier this month, they released their sophomore EP Slap on the Wrist which includes their snarling and bruising hit single "What Built Me." They generated a lot more buzz when they performed to pack venues at their first showcases at last year's SXSW and they return this week for a second time which are sure to be packed once again. And later this year, more fans across the nation will discover Queen Caveat as they embark on their nationwide tour this summer.

Jodie Schell of The Shakers
The Shakers celebrate Jodie Schell's birthday by at The Roxy.
photos by picksysticks

The Shakers do sure know how to throw a party. The party in question was actually a birthday party for lead singer Jodie 'Bomb' Schell who celebrated with 500 of her closest friends last Saturday at The Roxy. And helping her celebrate in front of a sold out crowd were Laura Wilde, Diamond Lane and Warner Drive.

Electrifying, high-octane rock. The Shakers don't know how to play any other way. And it's that explosive reputation that keeps their die-hard fans coming back for more. Jodie was in top form, singing songs from their 2010 self-titled debut EP and last year's debut album Oh So Loud going from simmering to boiling in "Train Song" and "Real Fast Plane" to face-pounding arena rock in "It's Me" and "Gimme Honey." The set lasted well over an hour with Jodie singing well over 10 songs as well as belting out brand new songs off their upcoming album.

They've been touring non-stop since their debut album Oh So Loud was released four months ago and from the looks of it, it doesn't seem like they're going to slow down anytime soon with planned gigs in Utah, San Francisco and Lake Arrowhead in the coming months. You can check out the rest of the photos from that night on our Flickr page right HERE.

With the 'temporary' closure of The Music Box, Joy Formidable's Wednesday show has now moved to The Mayan in downtown L.A.

2011 has been a busy year for the Northern Wales rockers performing at literally all the major music festivals - Lollapolaza, Reading, Leeds, Coachella and SXSW - all in support of their highly successful debut album the Big Roar. They've also opened up for the Foo Fighters after David Grohl anointed their hit single "Whirring" as the best song of 2011. Now, they start out 2012 on Monday with their last (Big Roar) North American tour with sold out shows on their first two dates in San Francisco and this Wednesday, they take their tour to The Mayan (originally scheduled for The Music Box) in downtown Los Angeles.

Joy Formidable, known for their high-energy shows hopefully will gives us a preview of new songs off their follow-up album which they recorded in Portland, Maine in just three weeks. Look to hear Ritzy Bryan''s pop and sugary sweet vocals layers nicely above grungy guitars and hard beats, her soft appearance quickly evaporating when she transforms herself into a high intensity and aggressive guitar thrashing banshee. This week, The Pretty Reckless released their newest EP Hit Me Like A Man the same week their North American tour kicked off today in Tucson, Arizona. Their 35-city Medicine Tour stops at Hollywood's House of Blues next Wednesday with support from Parlor Mob and The Hollywood Kills.

American Bloomers
American Bloomers

You know the feeling. That feeling of reconnecting with a best friend you haven’t seen in years and picking up right where you left off. That’s how I feel about the American Bloomers. If you’re not familiar with them, then listening to their songs will make you feel like you've known them for years.

Their debut EP Part One, recently released, is a welcoming, warm hug of rock balladry set to smooth acoustic strums. It’s like cozying up in front of a warm fire or a long road trip you wish would never end.

American Bloomers, consisting of lead singer Jaime Wyatt and siblings Jonathan and Jane Sheldon, aren't strangers to the local scene. Their dedicated and loyal fan-base has followed their careers with zest, attending their shows all over Los Angeles including The Viper Room and The Hotel Café – all the while Jane Sheldon of American Bloomerswithout having a formal album release. Now, with their highly anticipated EP, American Bloomers proves that good things come to those who wait.

One of the hardest working bands in town, American Bloomers shines without the flashiness as their blue-collar sound is echoed in Jonathan's southern-tinged guitars on "Never Had The Chance.” In “Fell For Love,” Jaime resonates classic rock with her rough-diamond vocals while the slow-burning ballad "Love Will Wreck You" whispers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Swaying simple, smooth melodies wrapped around world-weary emotions makes Part One a seductive and soulful debut for American Bloomers.
Jonathan Sheldon of American Bloomers
They perform their songs about life filled with heartbreak as though they’ve lived through every note of it. Like the calm before the storm, the American Bloomers are the ray of sunlight trying to pierce through the dark clouds.

And it looks as though their hard work is starting to pay off. Their EP has started out strong, already receiving numerous accolades from reviewers and their song “Never Had The Chance” just got nominated for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards which recognizes and honors artists, both mainstream and independent, from around the globe. That awards ceremony will be held this November in Los Angeles.

You can purchase their Part One EP on iTunes right HERE and on Amazon right HERE. And this Sunday you can catch them when they perform at Zoey's Cafe in Ventura.

Hey, with Saint Patrick's Day just around the corner (March 17th) check out American Bloomers' official music video for "Shamrock" off their new EP Part One.

Fancy Feast features "Made For Each Other" by Emilie Mover

Emilie Mover

Cat videos put to music should have its own cable channel. CATS CATS CATS for 24/7. That's how the new commercial for Fancy Feast reeled me in while I was watching The Voice. Cute cats set to a sweet and tender song by Emilie Mover called "Made For Each Other" set to a Bride and Groom on their wedding day with a kitten thrown in there for the awwww factor. The same song was also featured on a Fisher Price commercial a few months ago. You can purchase that single on CD Baby HERE and or on iTunes right HERE. This commercial totally makes me want to get a cat.

Queen Caveat - (Set time: 11:00 PM)

Queen Caveat exploded onto the LA rock scene in 2010 following the release of their debut EP, “Emptor”. This hard-hitting four-piece, led by maniacal, ferocious frontwoman Lauren Little, has been quick to turn the heads of rock fans throughout the west coast on the strength of their infectious anthems, unrivaled musicianship, and riotous – and sometimes downright dangerous – stage show. Their explosive performances at 2010′s & 2011′s Sunset Strip Music Festival and SXSW showcases had fans, bloggers, and club owners buzzing for months afterward. Their live show and hard work ultimately earned them the attention of ABC executives where they will be featured in a 2-hour special in 2012 on ABC’s “20-20″.

The Dollyrots - (Set time: 9:00 PM)

The Dollyrots are two girls and one boy. They’re a punk rock band but their CDs are very pop. Rah rah rah. Kelly is sugar sweet but mischevious and might sucker punch you if you’re dumb enough to try her patience. Which she has a lot of, if she hasn’t been visiting her friends Jack, Jim or Jameson. She likes to do girl things like grow plants and sew up her t-shirts and crochet and make strawberry cakes. But, she also likes to play her basses til they are sprinkled with blood and drives soo fast she’s not allowed behind the wheel. She likes to get carsick reading and writing postcards from the road. Her favorite guy is Quito, her dog, who you’ll meet after the show if you come see the band on tour. She loves Irish punk rock, girl groups, and anything off the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. And she smells great.
