Star Anna

Wow. Just saw this new music video for "Alone in this Together" from Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs from Washington. They’ve just released their third album in July from Local 638 Records. With her weathered and tortured voice highlighting the simplicity yet powerful melodies of their songs, it’s not surprising Star Anna’s music have gotten the rave reviews from music critics and by artists such as Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready and Duff McKagan of Guns ‘n’ Roses. It looks as though Star Anna & the Laughing Dogs set off for another tour tomorrow. SoCal will get a chance to see them when they arrive for a few dates in Los Angeles when they play Sept. 16th at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach and Molly Malones here in Hollywood on Sept. 17th. Can’t wait.

Star Anna's bio excerpt from official site:
"When a woman shuts up hundreds of people with her voice, it's a powerful thing. Star Anna--her given name--has been steadily wowing audiences and accumulating a rabid and dedicated fan base (including canonized musicians like the folks in Pearl Jam and Guns & Roses) since she was discovered busking outside a café in Ellensburg, Washington at age 16. She is whip-smart. She is street-smart. She is a private person who unhinges her jaw to release a voice that has punched many Pacific Northwesterners in the face over the past several years—a voice that brings to the table an authentic pain and strength that defies her 25 years." Ever since I saw The Weepies at Lilith Fair last year, I've become a huge fan of this duo who craft such beautifully woven melodies that pulls at the heart strings whether it be sad, happy or...just being able to make you smile. Anyways, as The Weepies started off their tour last week at The Troubadour, Bored4Music and I were able to score tickets at the sold-out show. Read below as Bored4Music sums up the night perfectly.
"The Weepies have been a fan favorite of mine since 2006, when I first heard them during an episode of Scrubs. The rest was history. Never imagined I would ever get a chance to see them perform live, at my favorite Los Angeles venue, in a special show. But that's what this story is about really..."

THE BANGLES @ The Grove Sept. 27th

Looks like the Bangles will be performing as well as signing copies of their new CD "Sweetheart of the Sun" on Tuesday, Sept. 27th at Barnes & Noble at The Grove at 7 pm. Not the 16th as we previously reported. But it looks as though you'll have to buy the cd at the store in order to get a wristband to watch the show...or at least be able to stand right in front of the stage.

Hey now! I just found out that The Bangles are going to be signing copies of their new album, "Sweetheart of the Sun" at Barnes & Nobe in The Grove in Los Angeles September 16th. Officially, their new album doesn't hit stores until September 27th. No word yet whether they'll be performing at The Grove's outdoor stage or just signing copies. It's their first album in eight years and are heading out for an east coast tour in October. Being Monday, I was going to post a "Manic Monday" vid but that's too obvious. Instead, here's a preview of their new single off their new album called "I Will Never Be Through With You." Enjoy!

Love Grenades' Elizabeth Wight
Love Grenades perform at The Echo.

The first thing you notice about Love Grenades is no guitar or bass player. Made up of just percussions and synths, front-woman Elizabeth Wight's low sultry voice glides above a whisper, setting up a noirish scene Elizabeth Wight of Love Grenadesthat's joined by slow hypnotic drum beats over a electro-disco synth mix. Vintage, hypnotic disco best sounds more like it. Wight's mesmeric dancing heightens the trance-inducing melodies to the point where you just have to go along for the ride until this trip is over. Fortunately, after listening to Love Grenades, you'll wish it would last forever.

Earlier in the night brought out Fonda. Remember them? KROQ darlings in the late 90s, it's been eight years since their last album. What have they been doing since? Well, lead singer Emily Cook has been working as a screenwriter writing such flicks as "Gnomeo and Juliet" while David Klotz currently works as the music editor for a little tv show called "Glee." Now, they've just released a new album, Better Days that recalls the indie-alternative sounds of the 90's mixed with a touch of 60s Brit pop. Better Days has a dreamy-lush quality that overflows with just enough billowy melodies that that will remind you of how good alternative music used to sound like. It's a welcome flashback.

Paramore's Hayley Williams
Main Stage performers Paramore at this year's Warped Tour in Chula Vista.
photos by picksysticks

It's Warped Tour time once again -the bastard child of all musical tour festivals or that weird cousin nobody in the family talks about during family get-togethers. Originally started as a punk rock tour 17 years ago, in recent years, it's gone through a hard metal phase. (not that anyone's complaining). But what Warped Tour was known for was that they had something for everyone young and old. This year, founder Kevin Lyman took control of the reigns once again and booked every band himself. And what he found is a diverse line-up - from punk rock, classic ska, metal, screamo, rap and alternative, this year's Warped Tour truly has something for every music lover.

This year, the tour saw veteran acts like Less Than Jake, 3OH!3 and A Day To Remember return. It also welcomed new acts that are on the verge of breaking such as Yelawolf, The Sharks and Big Chocolate. Such was the case for Paramore in 2005, a 5-piece band still in their teens. After their premiere on Warped, their debut album peaked at #30 on the Billboard charts. Flash forward six years later and five tours of duty on Warped, Paramore returns to Warped tour with their San Diego date their only California stop. This year also showcased a strong contingency of female-fronted bands who came out in force, proving they can rock as hard as any other band out there. From pop, acoustic to alternative, these gals are the anti-Lilith, leaving sappy melodies at the door and giving way to screaming stadium anthems and punk rock attitudes.

The Narrative's Suzie Zeldin and Jesse Gabriel

Since set times change at every stop, it was important to first check out the giant inflatable board that lists set times for bands and then mapping out your plan of attack. The Narrative's Suzie Zeldin 80 bands covering 7 stages spread out in San Diego's Cricket Amphitheater parking lot. Luckily, other than one band, everybody I wanted to watch didn't overlap each other.

The day started off with The Narrative, a New York duo consisting of Suzie Zeldin (vocals, keys), and Jesse Gabriel (Guitar, vocals). When you think Warped Tour, The Narrative is a band you wouldn't expect to see. You see, they don't have any heavy piercings (that I could see), they don't have tattoos (that I could tell), they hardly drink (from what I hear) and they don't sing...loud. They're the roses without the thorns at this years festival or the dessert before the meal you could say.

Sharing vocal duties, Suzie and Jesse's indie-pop shine are delivered over bouncy synths and saturated harmonies which made their 2008 EP Just Say Yes turn lots of heads. And when they released their self-titled debut album last year, there was no mistaking their talents with songs "Fade" and "Trains" immediate standouts. They were named on PureVolume's list of "Top Unsigned Bands of 2010" so it's not surprising that Warped founder Kevin Lyman handpicked them to perform this year on his personal showcase stage. This marks their first Warped Tour appearance, having spent the early part of the year on the strengths of their critically acclaimed debut album, opening for Eisley.

Neo Geo
Neo Geo's Rainy Terrell performs at the Skullcandy Stage.

Now, one the bands I was really looking forward to were Los Angeles-based Neo Geo, the hard-driving electro-rock 5-piece band fronted by the firecracker of a lead singer Rainy Terrell. Neo Geo is an electric live band who carry themselves like tour veterans, commanding every inch of the Skullcandy Stage. Intense and dark melodies drive this band as Terrell laces her defiant vocals over bruising bass and drums but yet Neo Geo hits hardest when unleashing tormenting guitar riffs in songs like "Can't Catch Me" and "DT Killer." When Neo Geo released their self-titled debut album in June, they quickly drew comparisons to Paramore and Evanescence. But it's hard to pin down Neo Geo. Using a patchwork of musical styles, Neo Geo weaves their songs with speckles of metal, goth, grunge, rock and electro – as though stitching a new type of hybrid musical genre.

After Neo Geo, time was spent people watching and checking out the Warped scene. Spread out across the lot were band booths selling merch and usually, after their set, would meet fans to sign a few autographs and take pics. Other booths specialized in the environmental and political nature while others geared towards the fun side such as the The Canvas Foundation booth, an organization created to promote art and creativity where people used the opportunity to show off their self expression through art by painting themselves (or each other).

Juliet Simms of Automatic Loveletter

While passing by the Ernie Ball Stage, a quick scan at the schedule surprisingly showed that Automatic Loveletter was about to take the stage. While Automatic Loveletter wasn't named in the list of peJuliet Simms of Automatic Loveletterrformance this day, or the entire tour, it was a welcomed unannounced surprise for me and for many others who were excited to see front-woman Juliet Simms make an appearance in support of their new acoustic album "The Kids Will Take Their Monsters On." Usually shredding it up onstage with a full band, Simms threw us a curve by performing the entire set solo, maybe a possible preview to her upcoming appearance on a certain reality-competition show. Simms recently tweeted she will be competing in the upcoming 2nd season of the NBC singing show "The Voice," which is ironically the first thing that strikes you - her tortured and vulnerable vocals, highlighted by her tender soulful-rock arrangements. Joplin, of course, comes to mind when you hear her belt out "Black Ink Revenge," and "Carry the Fire." Not much to say about Juliet and Automatic Loveletter but that she simply blew me away with her toned-down acoustic performance which, surprisingly for me, was the best performance of the day.

Mr. Downstairs

photos by picksysticks

One of the big tickets bands of the day wasn't seen on any of the seven stages but at the Vans Girls tent, a tiny booth located in front of the Main Stage. Mr. Downstairs, theMr. Downstairs' Asia Whiteacre and Dani Artaud brainchild of Dani Artaud and Asia Whiteacre was formed last year in Los Angeles. Artaud, formerly of widely popular Millionaires, shocked many when she announced her departure from the group to form Mr. Downstairs. When they released their first single, "Legendary" months later, it quickly topped over 40,000 views on YouTube. A complete departure from the electro-pop-dance tunes the Millionaires are famous for, Mr. Downstairs' songs echo sounds of early 60s girl groups like The Shirelles and the Shangri-Las but with a modern indie-pop twist that focuses on cascading vocal harmonies and simple feel-good melodies. With beach-cruising arrangements by Jake Johnson (guitar), Dre Smith (bass) and Chase Meyer (drums), they help create a unique sound suited for driving top down up the Pacific Coast Highway. And while previewing songs from their upcoming debut album, spotted on the other side of the sprawling Warped layout a couple hours later were the remaining members of The Millionaires, Melissa and Allison Green possibly there to show support to Dani.

Although they didn't perform, The Millionaires were spotted taking pictures with fans at the San Diego stop of Warped Tour. Hours before, ex-member Dani Artaud performed with her new band Mr. Downstairs.

And finally it was off to the Main Stage to catch powerhouse Paramore, playing only seven dates on the tour with San Diego being the California stop on the tour. To be honest, I never hopped on the Paramore train. I started this site two years after they broke onto the scene, focusing more on local bands. But after watching them for the first time, I now see what all the excitement is about.

The photographer's pit had to be cleared for safety reasons because loyal fans went into a frenzy as soon as Paramore took the stage, spilling over the protective barriers. Hayley Williams with phoenix red hair, energizing the crowd, pummeled her way through their three-album catalogue with earlier favorites from their debut album such as "Pressure," and "Here We Go Again," to Riot, their certified platinum hit record and "Ignorance" and "Careful" which came off their latest release, Brand New Eyes. And to end their set to a rousing crowd, Paramore finished off with "Misery Business" their first single off Riot, by bringing up three fans to sing along onstage as firecracker orange confetti streamed upward into the air closing their set.

With my work day done, it was time to chill, each some churros and catch a few bands before making the long trek home back to Los Angeles. It was another great event filled with awesom weahter, nice people and above all, great music. Just like Paramore, Katy Perry and Mike Posner, it'll be interesting to see which bands come out of this Warped Tour class and reach superstardom. Now in its 17th year, Warped Tour just seems to be getting bigger each year with a more diverse lineup of bands which should please everyone going to the tour.

Great news! I always love when there's news about The Dollyrots. Other than the fact that they're currently touring with Bowling For Soup, their new 3-song EP will be released to the world tomorrow (Aug. 9th) on iTunes. ( You can purchase it now right HERE )Their new EP is called Arrested Youth and they just premiered the video for "Playing with Fire." Check it out below. Oh, can you spot a few of my pics in the vid? You're staring at one right about this post. Very cool, I must say. Ahh...the memories. This was taken when I was still shooting film. (Huh? what's that? exactly!) and this shot was actually my first Dollyrots show at the now defunct Safari Sams in Hollywood and used on my very first Picksysticks post way back in 2007. Wow, has it been that long? It's been a great journey following this band and I'm looking forward for more shows with The Dollyrots. You guys can catch them when they stop by and make an appearance at this weekend's Vans Warped Tour in Boise, Seattle & Portland. They're a great live band. Check 'em out!!

Finalists Jes Hudak, Sonyae Elise and Scotty Granger
Platinum Hit finalists Jes Hudak, Sonyae Elise and Scotty Granger

I finally caught the season finale of Bravo's Platinum Hit to watch local songwriter Sonyae Elise win this songwriting reality show. In the end the judges picked Sonyae over another local singer/songwriter Jes Hudak. As winner, Sonyae recieves the grand prize of $100,000, a publishing deal with Sony and BMI songwriters: The Writing Camp, and a record deal with RCA/Jive.

It was pretty much a Los Angeles clean sweep with the top three and final songwriters all currently residing in Los Angeles. LA Represent!! But to be honest, I thought Sonyae, the only one of twelve contestants, didn't have a chance in winning this but her strengths in coming up with a concept on top of her strong lyric writing won me over and apparently the judges. Jes, by far, the singer/songwriter who grew the most lyrically and melodically showed it in her final song, "Come Alive" but couldn't overcome the consistent Sonyae's lyrical wizardry in the powerful "My Religion."

And then there's Scotty Granger who actually wrote one of my favorite songs of the season called "Beautiful You" which he wrote about himself and his struggles of coming out and living openly as a gay man.

All in all, all the songs were powerful and it was a tough choice for judges Jewel, Kara DioGuardi and guest judge Leona Lewis. But in the end, they chose right by crowning Sonyae the winner of the first season of Platinum Hit. As for Platinun Hit's future? No word yet if Bravo will bring back the series next season. It struggled in the ratings and was moved from its original Monday night airings to Friday's kiss-of-death time-slot. Hopefully they will bring it back. I just love watching the songwriting process and how a single idea can turn into a Top-40 hit. Check out Sonyae's winning song below along with Jes and Scotty's final songs. You can purchase their songs in iTunes right HERE! You can also catch Jes Hudak this Tuesday when she performs at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.

Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast
Best Coast performing at this years' Make Music Pasadena.

As a thank you for the support they have received this past year, Best Coast has released a new song "How They Want Me to Be" as a gift for all of their loyal fans. In her blog Bethany Cosentino also reveals news on their new album. Here's what she had to say:
You guys have been some of the most wonderful fans this past year, and I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting Best Coast. When times are rough for me, and I am traveling and not sleeping, and am worried about daily life, it always makes me feel better to know that my fans are out there.

I know I've been talking a lot about our second album, but it's still very far away from being created. I wanted to share a bit of life from recent Best Coast with you guys, so I thought I would post this song for you all to hear as a little teaser for the album.

This song was recorded a few months ago at Black Iris, the same studio we recorded "Crazy For You." This song is not properly mixed, it's mostly a rough studio demo of a song I wrote and wanted to record. I am about 99% sure that this song will get re-recorded and changed up a bit and will end up on our second album. It's called "How They Want Me To Be."

It's just a small taste of what's to come, and I wanted to give you guys something to get excited about since you've been the best fans in the whole world!

I am off to New York to start a weekend of fly in dates, so wish me luck, and I hope you all love this song and I can't wait to record more.

You can listen to the new song "How They Want Me to Be" right HERE!

Of the five bands playing The Roxy Saturday night, one band shined much brighter than the rest. Pixikill, a five-piece band fronted by sisters Jewel and Blaire Restaneo, confidently unleashed a pandora's box of slash and burn guitars delivered over clobbering beats in front of a packed crowd.

If they looked confident onstage, it's no surprise. Jewel and Blaire have been performing most of their lives. Between the two, they've already performed on Broadway and had roles in television, movies and commercials – all this before breaking their twenties. On the music front, the duo have already recorded a few albums, donating all their proceeds to Children's Hospitals. And it seems there's no slowing down for the pair. Their new venture is fronting Pixikill with band members Mike Kimchi (drums), Victor Trevino (bass), and Chris Norwood (lead guitar). This night, they were performing in support of their debut EP album, The Luring.

There's more to this band than lush pop songs and bubble-gum punk. That's what I expected but what they showed us was the complete opposite. From their fist-pumping frenetic first single "Chameleon" about losing your true identity for the sake of fitting in to dealing with the subject of depression in the noirish "Vampire," Pixikill gives us music with a message.

Jewel of PixikillBlaire of Pixikill

Sisters Jewel and Blaire, who write all their songs, holds your attention with dramatic flourish showing their musical range, veering from atmospheric synths to guitar-heavy arrangements while also surprising with dark, textured ballads such as "Banshee" and the aforementioned "Vampire."

Pixikill aren't the run of the mill girl-pop band. They play well beyond their years with a polished sound that puts most debuts to shame. And as they continue to play more dates this summer in support of the debut EP, they're also preparing to release their full-length album later this year.
