Ting Tings

A few people asked me what song was playing in the new commercial for the new show "Suburgatory" that premieres September 28th on ABC. Well, the song featured in the 30 second ad is The Ting Tings "That's Not My Name" which was released here in the U.S. in 2009 off of their debut album We Started Nothing. It's pretty catchy and the new show looks pretty quirky and fun. I may just have to tune in.

Check it out, yo! Terra Naomi just posted a video for my favorite song "Everybody Knows" off her new album, To Know I'm Ok. Recently, when we caught her at The Hotel Cafe, we called her new album "a slow burning wild fire that engulfs with heartfelt a mesmerizing flame that dances seductively..." Just listen and you'll see (or hear) what I mean. Catch Terra when she plays her summer residency at Malibu Wines next month and you can also watch her when she plays The Hotel Cafe August 4th.

THE JEZABELS @ The Viper Room

The Jezabels, hot off the news of signing with Play It Again Sam Recordings in the UK, just broke news that their debut album, "Prisoner" will be released next spring.

The Sydney-based band, consisting of Haley Mary (vocals), Heather Shannon (keys), Samuel Lockwood (Guitar) and Nik Kaloper (drums), have been making noise down under since the release of their first EP The Man Is Dead in 2009. They've played to sold-out shows all over the world, most recently causing a big stir at this year's South By Southwest. Now, with the release of their third EP Dark Storm last year, The Jezabels have solidified their indie-status and have been generating a cult-like following with their high-energy live shows and high-gliding arena choruses. Dark Storm, their third EP of this trilogy is a much more confident and mature offering. It's as though they've had to grow up quickly from their short two years of touring, a real life school of rock living on the road with those experiences and emotions evident on this latest release.

Last week, they stopped off at The Viper Room to play a quick set before jetting off for their UK tour next month. And for an early show at The Viper on a Monday night, the room was pretty packed with fans who were there to hear Mary's dreamy pop-vocals layered on top of soaring arrangements. Their songs, with Lockwood and Laloper's lead, are peppered with pop-alternative melodies and Shannon's sonic landscaping which, when textured together, makes you feel good to be alive, like you're standing on the edge of a cliff, balancing inches from certain weightlessness.

The Jezabels, in four years since they've playing, already play like veterans. They have the talent and they certainly have to sound to fly as high as they want. Where that talent will take them is up to them. But judging by their first three EPs their highly anticipated debut album is surely going to be eagerly awaited. The Jezabels return to Los Angeles on November 8th when they play The Echo in Silver Lake.

On Thursday, thousands of Angelenos made the trek to the Santa Monica Pier for its annual Twilight Dance Series to watch 80's rock legends The Bangles perform a free concert.

Now in its 27th year, The Twilight Dance series which is a production of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation plans to feature high-profile artists from all over the world. In its second week, it was local favorites The Bangles who grew up a few miles down the road in Brentwood, that brought their pop beats and vocal harmonizing to the thousands who showed for this 80's flashback. The original trio consisting of Susanna Hoffs and sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson are getting ready to release their upcoming album, "Sweetheart of the Sun" which drops September 13th. They performed two songs off their new album, "Under a Cloud," and the Todd Rundgren cover "Open Your Eyes" while also playing their classic hits, "Walk Like An Egyptian," "Manic Monday," and "Eternal Flame."

Earlier, with the deck of the pier overflowing with fans still arriving, security had to close the gates in fear of overcrowding and diverted the rest of the fans to the beach where they can watch the concert from a big screen provided by OneWest Bank and the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation. As a full moon rose above the Pier, many brought picnic baskets and cuddled up with loved ones on the beach to relive their 80's nostalgia on a perfect summer night and watched on a big screen.

The day began with Canadian singer/songwriter Caracol (aka: Carole Facal) who mixes American Folk with the sunny relaxing sounds of the Caribbean which was perfect for this Santa Monica beach seCaracoltting. Her first solo album, "L'arbre aux Parfums," which is written in both French and English, features the raw sounds of the ukulele and autoharp and described as exploring, through her lyrics, a darker side of human emotions and relationships through a no holds-barred expression of anger, love, contempt and arrogance in search of something more. Caracol is currently working on her new album which is expected to be released later this year.

But the night belonged to The Bangles who played well into the night kicking off with the guitar shredder "Hazy Shade of Winter" from the 1987 movie "Less Than Zero." While playing songs that covered their four albums including Different Light and Doll Revolution, The Bangles also squeezed in a few covers such as The Turtles' "Outside Chance" and "September Gurls" written by Big Star in 1974 which they recorded in 1995 for a compilation. After playing 18 songs in two hours, the Bangles ended with chart-topper "Walk Like An Egyptian" asking the crowd numbering in the thousands to sing along. While the Bangles turned back the clock for thousands of fans this night, they still look to the future with all new songs and an upcoming album coming out in September that features 10 new tracks.

I don't listen to a lot of bluegrass. In fact, for the life of me, I couldn't even name a famous bluegrass singer. But if the music of Sarah Jarosz is what bluegrass sounds like, then sign me uSarah Jaroszp! During a recent sold-out performance, 20-year-old Jarosz captivated in her first Los Angeles show with her refreshing voice that blends traditional with a modern sound – a sound that has garnered her a Grammy nomination and rave reviews for her latest album, Follow Me Down. Recently named to Metromix's list of 25 Hottest Artists Under 25, Sarah's music is like a gentle breeze through a forest, untouched by the outside world, having that pristine feel to it, innocent and undisturbed. No auto-tuning nor any studio trickery to enhance instruments. What you see is what you get. Sarah's performance so awe-inspiring, at the end of her set, the crowd demanded an encore, something I've never seen done at The Hotel Cafe. Sarah has also taken to reshape popular songs such as Radiohead's "The Tourist," and Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" into a bluegrass inspired feel which she does successfully. Can we see a Sarah Jorosz covers album in the style of bluegrass in the future? We'll wait and see. Sarah is currently on her first UK tour, returning stateside in August.

People who left after Sarah Jarosz's performance surely missed a treat in Annaliese (aka: Annaliese Schiersch) who currently lives in Los Angeles but grew up in Seattle. Her voice weathered as though she's bled every single musical note, you just feel as if Annaliese has lived every moment of her songs. I wasn't familiar with her music but, soon after, rushed home and listened to her songs online. Her songs hauntingly beautiful like "Stay Gone" which was named Best Song of the Month last November by SongwriterUniverse. And her newest single, "Hold Me Steady" was recently featured in the Lifetime movie "Justice for Natalee Holloway" which you can listen below.

Wallis Bird - An Idea About Mary (LIVE)

Wallis Bird

Gotta love the social media! Friends always posting and recommending really great singers that I otherwise, would never be exposed to as in this video which comes from Irish singer Wallis Bird. Often compared to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge, Bird's music blends the sounds of traditional folk and blues with the styles of classic rock that has garnered rave reviews since her debut album in 2007.
