When Maxi Wild grabbed the guitar and stepped to the mic, it was like awe yeah, time to rip it up. Take a deep breath and wham! Skate or die. Shred the chords. Tighten the noose. Ride punk rock angel wings burning to earth through the thunder and lightning blur. Slap time and bend gravity. Break the pavement as if it was a road to nowhere. Coming through - useless barricades - coming through. Unstoppable. Spark the butane torch blue, needle point the burn, and make permanent marks. No ceremonies required. Trample the red tape and tear lines apart, break them all. Adrenaline can’t be canned. Wait for nobody. Pressure crammed to stress fracture limits. Normalcy ripped out of order and caught fire in the punk chaos mayhem. High Kicks slamming knuckles in the circle pit of life.

When the guitar took a rest, Maxi snatched the microphone from the stand. No more standing still. No more hand tremors pulsating the chords. It was time for Maxi to strut her wild. Electronic beats started up. Sean Gone on bass guitar kept the deep boom and Jimmy James went raving on drums. Now time to dance. The aftermath cinders set the atmosphere to release the body in grooving commotion. Confuse the muscles twisting and turning. Movement in one direction is already going in another. The body flows to each its own limb. Lights craze with color as hair flips and circuits the mind. The songs are longer. It’s a celebration. The other side of the rush. This is the release. Now fully charged. It’s time to move the body and feel the flow of vibrant life. High Kicks on the Crayola of joy dance floor.

The dual personality sound of High Kicks makes them rad to watch live. It’s punk jams or dance beats. Punk jams jolts the energy like shock paddles, a quick charge, while the dance paces the body and numbs the thoughts, as though becoming one with the vibe, feeling the energy’s smooth, seemingly ceaseless, dissipation. Then Maxi kicks up the guitar and sticks the fork in the socket again!

High Kicks will be displaying their two kicks of talents every Friday night in February at 5 Star Bar in Downtown Los Angeles. Oh dang, I need oxygen.

Lonely Trees

The last time we saw Annalee Fery, she was very pregnant and fronting Los Angeles' hauntingly electro/rock band Monsters Are Waiting. That was back in 2008. Now, she has joined Lonely Trees, a collaborative group with former Campfire Girls's singer Christian Stone. Drummer extraordinaire Amy Wood also joins the group. She used to drum for The Dollyrots and also, currently drums for All Wrong and the Plans Change. (Either that or "Amy Wood' is a popular name for drummers). Anyways, here's their new video "Flutter." You can catch them when they play live February 6th at Bardot's Hollywood.

PIXIKILL'S Jewel and Blaire Restaneo
Pixikill's Jewel and Blaire Restaneo

Jewel and Blaire Restaneo. Remember their names. Still in their teens, the Restaneo sisters are already Hollywood veterans. Chances are, you've already either seen them or heard them. Both have starred on Broadway, have been featured in numerous national commercials and appeared in television and film. On the music front, the duo has already recorded a few albums, even donating all their proceeds to Childrens Hospitals.

Now, they look to solidify their names in the music world with their new venture fronting the band, Pixikill which infuses grunge with the electro-pop sounds of the 80’s. And if their debut single is a taste of what’s to come, then they’re certainly on their way to achieving superstar status. Harnessing the energy of Paramore with the attitude of Avril Lavigne, “Chameleon” is their buzzing pop debut single littered with infectious melodies. With bruising guitars and soaring vocals, Pixikill aren't the run of the mill girl-pop band. They play well beyond their years with a polished sound that should put most debuts to shame. Rounding up the band is Chris Norwood (guitar), Victor Trevino (bass), Mike Kim (drums) and Corey Waters (keys). They're gearing up for a tour this year as well as releasing their first full-length album. Can't wait!!

I just stumbled on this beautiful song by Iyeoka (pronounced: ee-yo-kah), a Nigerian-American songwriter/poet who channels the soul of Nina Simone and the spirit of Tracy Chapman. The song is called "Say Yes" of her new album of the same name. And only two months since its release, another one of her songs, "The Yellow Brick Road," has become the official theme song for USA Network's show "Fairly Legal." It has also been featured on HBO's "How To Make It In America" which is executive produced by Mark Wahlberg.

Daughter of Nigerian born parents Iyeoka was a practicing pharmacist before launching her career as a poet, performer, songwriter and activist. Iyeoka’s work as an artist and an activist has garnered her praises and accolades from all over the world. In 2009 Iyeoka placed 2nd at the Individual World Poetry Slam Championship and was a 2010 TED Global Fellow. She has toured in support of artists such as Femi Kuti, Zap Mama, Soulive, was featured on the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and has performed nationally at the TBS Trumpet Awards, the Sullivan Honors Awards at the Kennedy Center and Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on HBO.

Gliese 581g (pronounced “glee-zuh”) is a recently discovered planet way beyond our solar system, but very much like Earth. The planet is nestled nicely in a star’s “habitable zone,” like the location of our Earth in relation to the sun. Therefore, it is considered a Goldilocks planet. That means conditions on Gliese 581g are “just right” to possibly support life. It falls into the middle of the two extremes, perfect conditions, like the little girl’s preferences in Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In a sense, Gliese 581g might possibly be our New Earth. Just a bit of science fact or fear.

Gliese 581g is also the title of the new EP released by the Los Angeles based band, Mad Planet (Cooper Gillespie: bass, vocals & Greg Gordon: drums, keyboards, guitars). The four tracks are first releases from their upcoming album entitled: The Goldilocks Zone. The astral sounds of Gliese 581g are currently streaming and FREE DOWNLOAD on

There is a certain planetarium, star gazing, essence to EP Gliese 581g, as if a visit to Los Angeles’ own Griffith Observatory was part of the inspiration, relaxing, meditating, watching the heavens rotate above Mount Hollywood. It has a more delicate essence than the dark shadow crawl feel of their debut album, All Elephants. It is more of a lost in space, star cluster, free float between darkness and light. A fire ball massive in size, light years away, yet only as bright as a twinkle in the eye. A whole world of emotions hidden beyond what we actually see in that glimmer. The empty space inside us with its little bursts of bright hope, possibly love, possibly anger.

In a recent Filter Magazine interview, Mad Planet describes Gliese 581g:

“We are releasing an ep later this month called Gliese 581g. It is named after the planet, Gliese 581g which is perpetually light on one side and dark on the other. Lyrically the songs on the ep deal with the conflict between the light and the dark inside each of us. They are more moody and atmospheric than the songs on our previous album.”
