A KISS COULD BE DEADLY @ The Continental Room

The last hurrah has come for A Kiss Could Be Deadly. After a few years on “hiatus,” of mainly dispersing into other bands, AKCBD reunited for a few shows and an EP release. Farewell is the sad but appropriate title of their new EP consisting of their remaining unreleased catalog of music, including “The Metro” ( Berlin cover), along with a few favorites remixed. Hosting their final two live shows were The Continental Room (Friday, July 16) in Fullerton , and on the following night at Mission Tobacco Lounge (Saturday, July 17) in the band’s hometown, Riverside . A Kiss Could Be Deadly has breathed its last breath and now only the music remains.

The real possible reason for this short reuniting and release may be to raise money for new equipment for Electric Valentine. This is Lauren Baird and Chris Qualls’ current electo-synth band that came about after A Kiss Could Be Deadly first went dormant. What happened was, a few months ago, the duo’s studio was broken into and their recording equipment along with hard drives full of ideas and hard work suddenly disappeared. EV is humbly asking their supporters for donations to bring the music back the band. To help via PayPal, their address is

Hopefully the short spark revival of A Kiss Could Be Deadly will be able to somehow save the critically wounded life of Electric Valentine. It is always good to see differences set aside when a friend, or band, is in need. EV’s new body of work may be gone for now, but their heart, and supporters, will not let them give-up. Interestingly enough, they are in the process of releasing an acoustic EP. Could this be because of the lack of equipment? It is expected to include a new song and acoustic renditions of three of their popular dance tracks.

Maybe this post is more about the recent activities of vocalist Lauren Baird and synth operator Chris Qualls, which is their position respectively for both of these bands.

The following is a live performance of A Kiss Could Be Deadly at The Continental Room performing “I Can Be Your Anti-Hero, Baby” off their new Farewell EP.

A Kiss Could Be Deadly set list for Friday, July 16, 2010 @ The Continental Room: 1.) And So It Ends, 2.) I’ll Be Your Ant-Hero, Baby, 3.) The Exit, 4.) Damage Control, 5.) Poison IV, 6.) I Wrote You A Love Song, 7.) The Metro (Berlin cover), 8.) The Book, Not The Feeling, 9.) Midnight Romance.

The Dollyrots' new album, "A Little Messed Up" from Blackheart Records will be released August 17 and Highwire Daze got a preview of the record and gave it a glowing review! Currently, The Dollyrots are on tour with Bowling For Soup through October.

Here's an excerpt:

...their third album, A Little Messed Up, has been unleashed and it’s an absolute stunner!...A Little Messed Up is the second Dollyrots slab of tunes to be released by Blackheart Records – owned by none other than punk rock legend Joan Jett! Along with their previous albums Eat Your Heart Out and Because I’m Awesome, The Dollyrots has amassed a thrilling collection of timeless punk rock songs. If The Ramones and the Go-Go’s were to have a hot monster child from a super illicit encounter, it would turn out a lot like the Dollyrots. High energy, badass fun from a band destined to finally make their way to the top!!!"

MARINA & THE DIAMONDS @ Lilith (Irvine, Ca.)

Hailing from London, Marina and the Diamonds' plan to take over the world began earlier this month in Los Angeles at The Troubadour, which quickly sold out. Then after a stop at San Francisco ’s Popscene, a radio debut appearances at KCRW and a U.S. television debut at “Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson,” Marina continued her U.S. trip at last weekend’s Lilith Fair. Her critically acclaimed album "The Family Jewels" exploded onto Billboard's 'Top new Artist Albums' chart at #2 and has already been certified gold in the United Kingdom.

Fronted by Marina Diamandis, Marina and the Diamonds' growing U.S. fan-base was apparent as they crowded the stage at this year's Lilith Fair in Irvine, California. The rest of those in attendance stood back with curiosity not knowing what to expect from the gal from across the pond. What they got was Marina ’s crisp-operatic vocals rising above her pop rock melodies – like one of those children's jewelry boxes, when opened a ballerina would rise as a high pitched musical melodies were produced by a pinned cylinder being plucked by a steel comb. In this case, it was Marina emerging instead of a ballerina. And on a day when nearly all the acts on stage were conservative and tame, Marina definitely stood out from the crowd, her stage presence mirroring performance art with her insightful and striking observational lyrics as her backdrop like her song, "Hollywood ," Marina 's take her love of pop culture and the obsession of celebrity. During, the crowd (surely filled with people from L.A. ) watched as she sang wearing dollar sign sunglasses, "Hollywood infected your in a movie scene/puking American dreams/I'm obsessed with the mess that's America ."

In the end, based on the line of fans waiting for autographs and pictures afterwards, her introduction to the Lilith crowd was positive. Marina and the Diamonds will return in the fall to launch her first headlining U.S. Tour. She ends the tour in L.A. on September 17th at the El Rey.

What can I say about The Pretty Reckless? Fronted by Taylor Momsen, this 16-year-old is an old soul with a degree in classic hard rock. Her music is testosterone driven with slashing guitars and ferociously growling vocals. It's not surprising since all her music idols were all men – The Beatles, Led Zepplin, The Who, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, White Stripes and Nirvana to name a few.

Dual careers in both acting and music are often times challenging but not impossible. Many have tried, few have succeeded. Known for her acting resume in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Spy Kids 2 and most notably CW's Gossip Girl, Momsen makes the smooth transition most actors-turned-singers can't accomplish. After watching her at Vans Warped Tour's opening day, it certainly seems Momsen has found her true calling.

In support of their new upcoming debut album, "Light Me Up" from Interscope Records, The Pretty Reckless perform like old pros, pumping out raw power with an arena-rock sound. Even before the release of their 3-track EP, The Pretty Reckless already amassed a huge fan base. From the White Stripes-esque, "My Medicine," to frenetic energy of "Goin' Down" to "Make Me Wanna Die" which was on this summer's hit movie, "Kick Ass," just about everyone in attendance sang along to every song Taylor threw their way – this without a formal release. Expect their new album, "Light Me Up" to drop this August. The Pretty Reckless continues on the Warped Tour through August and you can catch them back in the Los Angeles area when The Vans Warped Tour returns to Pomona on August 11th.

photos by picksysticks

On the first day of the Vans Warped Tour, Hey Monday meant business and pulled no punches, kicking off with their hit, "How You Love Me Now." Playing all dates on this gruelling 43-city tour, this five-piece band showed no signs they were going to pace themselves for the long haul. Instead they came in full throttle whipping the crowd into a frenzy in this triple-digit So Cal heat wave. In the short amount of time as a band Hey Monday has sold nearly 500,000 songs, graced the cover of several magazines in the United States and overseas, and have received over 28 million plays on MySpace.

Hailing from West Palm Beach (Florida), Hey Monday puts new meaning to the phrase "You can sleep when you're dead." Less than two years since their release of their debut album, "Hold on Tight," Hey Monday, fronted by Cassadee Pope has been on the road non-stop for over a year with tour of duties on Bamboozle, The AP Tour, Hot Topic Acousitc Tour, Glamour Kills Tour, Let's Make a Mess Tour and their very own UK Headling Tour.

In the midst of all this touring, they've managed to write more songs. Now, news comes that on August 17th , Hey Monday will launch their highly anticipated sophomore effort, "Beneath It All," referencing Pope's brutally honest lyrics. They've already released their first single off that album, 'Wish You Were Here,' and will soon release another as soon as they reach 200,000 Facebook friends (currently, they're at 181,468). So recommend to your friends and friends of friends.

VersaEmerge (FL) hits the frantic festival tour this year through North America via Hoodwink Festival 2010, The Bamboozle, and now streaming full wind to the end of Vans Warped Tour Twenty Ten. The band is out to recruit new fans into their vulture core with their full length debut album “Fixed At Zero” released by Fueled By Ramen (the same label as Paramore).

But it is more than just getting the album. Those that pre-order the album at the VersaEmerge merchandise booth will receive a special limited edition laminate, signed by each band member! The collector’s laminate will also have a code for digital album download with bonus tracks (which is much more convenient than holding a CD case all day getting crushed in the crowd). It is also a pass that gives access to merch booth discounts and a cut-in-line at Warped Tour signing sessions. More music, more stuffs, more autographs, and if you are lucky, grab down a promo poster found around the festival and throw it up to show support while crowd surfing, and who knows, you might just get it autographed as well.

As for their live performance on the Glamour Kills stage this year, it is one not to miss if you are any bit of a fan for the band. There is much insight to their performance that devotees will recognize while others just scratch their heads and flow with the fun. For instance, the strange long feather dangling from her hip may seem out of place, but the screamers smothered across the stage barricade know it is all about the vulture crew. Followers talking with their fingers throw up the Fixed At Zero VersaVulture eye giving their leader, lead singer, Sierra Kusterbeck, a vulture grin and the adrenaline to unleash her soaring vocals to its threshold and beyond. She becomes her own fan on stage, giving a genuine pumped performance, with a few bump and gun mishaps, that together, reveal a delight and purity that connects her to her wake of vultures and makes others turn into supporters. A professional sound, yet lively, good willed, type of band devoted to their fans.

The new album is only a hint to the fascination one can have with VersaEmerge. Get involved. It's marvelous. Feather hair clip anyone?

Eyes Set to Kill (Phoenix) unloads their angelic burning with havoc sound this year on the Ernie Ball big rig mobile stage truck for Vans Warped Tour 2010. They are in push of their new album “Broken Flames” on BreakSilence Records. Big names in the music print throwing support their way are AlAlexia Rodriguez of Eyes Set to Kill performs at the Home Depot CenterterAnissa Rodriguez of Eyes Set to Kill performs at the Home Depot Centernative Press setting them on the list of “100 Bands You Need To Know” and sisters Alexia (vocals/guitar) and Anissa Rodriguez (bass) front issue #54 of Outburn magazine, while Revolver Magazine does it different by labeling the ladies “Hottest Chicks in Metal.”

Their live performance is something to witness to feel the pure passionate raw energy of the music, and to get knocked around a bit in the circle pit. Like the mythic phoenix itself and the city they are from, this band burns with fury and yet has a smooth vocal beauty from Alexia that gives them a remarkable taste like sipping a cold Mexican beer in a squelching heat wave in the Valley of the Sun.

The Rodriguez sisters give this band the charming black cat appeal, but don’t dare forget about Cisko Miranda. It’s his screaming rage that turns the crowd into crazies. His vocals seem indigenous of Dante’s nine circles of hell possessed into one soul. Blistering hell fire of pain. The crowd absorbs it like 2,500 volts of electricity that sparks the mind flaming and limbs convulsing. Those with eyes gazing on the sisters will be surprised when they quickly find themselves getting tossed around in a whirlwind pit of PMS and testosterone.

Grab their new album, catch their live performance, and tear down their dual sided promotional poster for keepsakes at a local Warped Tour Twenty Ten near you.
