Since being formed in 2004, “The Oohlas” has been signed by label, released an EP, a full-length album, had a song featured on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. In those short four years, they have also played to sold-out shows with Sean Lennon, The Raveonettes and more recently with UK’s very own The Duke Spirit at The Troubadour on Saturday (which I unfortunately couldn’t get tickets too – bummer!) It was also sold-out when they opened for Stellastarr*. Are you seeing a pattern here?

But last Wednesday I was able to catch this Los Angeles trio when they headlined Club NME at Spaceland. Released in 2006, their debut full-length album, “Best Stop Pop,” is a driving power-pop album that infuses the sweet harmonies of Liz Phair, the sugary melodies of Tanya Donelly and the buzzing vocals of Kim Deal. Like a burst of anticipation, their songs are like that final class bell that frees us for the weekend – fun, carefree and throwing caution to the wind.

Comprised of front-lady Olivia Stone and brothers Mark and Greg Eklund, you could say The Oohlas are the new kids on the block. Growing up in Arizona, Olivia sang in school performances and in church and later moved to L.A. to pursue music. The former drummer of Everclear, Greg Eklund departed the band in 2003. Greg was introduced to Olivia by his brother Mark who worked with her and the rest, you could say, is history.

The Oohlas has put out one of my favorite debut albums in recent years and considering they haven’t had a lot of experience playing on the road, their album, “Best Stop Pop,” has got them featured in SPIN Magazine, Rolling Stone and was named one of the Top 10 ‘Buzz Bands’ by The L.A. Times which also included on that very same list, Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups and Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins.

Currently, The Oohlas are working on their next album and plans to tour again – maybe even Europe.
