MULHOLLANDS & A.M.E. @ Boardners

Club Moscow at Boardners last Wednesday brought out two of my favs, The Mulhollands and Automatic Music Explosion. Playing 25 minute sets each, both bands made the most of it and played to a packed house. Seriously though guys, if you haven't caught these two bands play yet then what are you waiting for?! Each show I go to seems to get more and more full. Catch 'em now!

One thing I learned? I gotta learn how to use flash. Well, even though Boardners is an awesome venue to watch live music, it pretty much sucks for photogs like me unless you shoot with a flash. The lights play crazy on my meter, turning my pics super saturated. When times like this happens, I revert to shooting black and white which is more forgiving in these types of lighting situations. As you can see, I tried to shoot color with A.M.E. and managed to get some decent shots. My the time The Mulhollands came out, I had to switch to B&W. What do you think? Oh well...gives more more reasons to go out and watch these guys again and take even more pics! Oh yeah! Sarah looks great in black and white anyways. I was looking forward to finally shooting her in full color especially with a that sweet dress she was wearing. It would've looked great in color.

Anyways, check out our last review of The A.M.E. here and The Mulhollands here!

NORTHERN STATE, KILLOLA, THE DOLLYROTS @ The Knitting Factory

WHOA! This line up last Saturday at The Knitting Factory was a PICKSYSTICKS wet dream! One SA-WEEEET night of girls rockin' out. The night consisted of Washington's The Trucks, LA sweethearts The Dollrots and Killola and New York's rap trio Northern State.

NORTHERN STATE

Just coming off their European tour with Tegan & Sara, Northern State are currently on their North American tour stopping off at Hollywood's Knitting Factory May 10th. Seeing this Beastie Boys-esque trio for the first time, I really loved them as they sang songs from their new album, "Can I Have This Pen?" Ok, I know...they're from New York and this is an L.A. site dedicated to L.A. bands but hey, these guys deserve mention. It's always great to watch a band that I hadn't seen before and then get totally blown away by them. For this album, Northern State teamed up with producer Chuck Brody of Shitake Monkey (Wu Tang Clan, Yoko Ono etc.) and Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys and what they came up with was a third album filled with party-like electro-beats and infectious tag-team verses in such kick-ass songs as "Good Distance," "Better Already," and "Sucka Mofo."

Two songs from “Can I Keep This Pen?” were featured on Grey’s Anatomy and a third was featured on the FX series Damages. Northern State also contributed their take on Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’ to Stereogum’s 10th anniversary tribute to OK Computer which they sang this night.

THE DOLLYROTS
What can I say about these guys? I love 'em. And they always put on a great show. Looks like they're on tour up until August. Check your local listings for tour info OR just click HERE and scroll down to their tour page. Looks like we're gonna get a video for my fav song, "My Best Friend's Hot" soon.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST - KILLOLA!!!

I never get tired of this band. I could watch this band for 24 hours straight! Just watching lead singer Lisa Riefell's energy onstage is exercise enough for me. PICKSYSTICKS should just be re-named KILLOLA-STICKS since I go to all their shows! Oh well...I'll be going to the show this Tuesday at Safari Sam's. They're just too addicting. PLUS, The Mulhollands are also playing that night also so that's gonna be another great line-up! Don't you just love L.A.? Where else can you see these kick-ass bands play together every other night. It's like a non-stop Picksy-Palooza!

Anyways, I leave you with some pics (as usual) and a cool vid! Enjoy!

You feel like DANCING?!! Listening to the first few tracks has gotten me hooked! Los Angeles electro-pop band, ULTRAVIOLET SOUND's new debut record, O.C.D. is out and you can download their record for FREE below. How cool is that?! Ultraviolet are fast becoming one of L.A.'s hottest bands around. You may have heard or even seen front-woman Sarah Hudson before. She was a guest judge on the first season of BRAVO's Project Runway and she's reportedly Kate Hudson's cousin. OR you've probably read about these guys from celebrity blogger Perez Hilton:

Ultraviolet's lyrics and sound grab inspiration from across the board with aspects of Rock and Roll, Hip-Hop, Dance, 80s and 90s music. Mashed to create a sound that has their hipster fans in a frenzy, this threesome's music has captured the attention of those on the forefront of what's fresh, original and different, delivering tomorrow's edge, today.

THE OOHLAS @ Spaceland

THE OOHLAS
Olivia Stone – vocals,guitar
Greg Eklund – guitar, vocals
Mark Eklund - bass

Olivia Stone of the The Oohlas

Since being formed in 2004, “The Oohlas” has been signed by label, released an EP, a full-length album, had a song featured on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack. In those short four years, they have also played to sold-out shows with Sean Lennon, The Raveonettes and more recently with UK’s very own The Duke Spirit at The Troubadour on Saturday (which I unfortunately couldn’t get tickets too – bummer!) It was also sold-out when they opened for Stellastarr*. Are you seeing a pattern here?

But last Wednesday I was able to catch this Los Angeles trio when they headlined Club NME at Spaceland. Released in 2006, their debut full-length album, “Best Stop Pop,” is a driving power-pop album that infuses the sweet harmonies of Liz Phair, the sugary melodies of Tanya Donelly and the buzzing vocals of Kim Deal. Like a burst of anticipation, their songs are like that final class bell that frees us for the weekend – fun, carefree and throwing caution to the wind.

Comprised of front-lady Olivia Stone and brothers Mark and Greg Eklund, you could say The Oohlas are the new kids on the block. Growing up in Arizona, Olivia sang in school performances and in church and later moved to L.A. to pursue music. The former drummer of Everclear, Greg Eklund departed the band in 2003. Greg was introduced to Olivia by his brother Mark who worked with her and the rest, you could say, is history.

The Oohlas has put out one of my favorite debut albums in recent years and considering they haven’t had a lot of experience playing on the road, their album, “Best Stop Pop,” has got them featured in SPIN Magazine, Rolling Stone and was named one of the Top 10 ‘Buzz Bands’ by The L.A. Times which also included on that very same list, Cold War Kids, Silversun Pickups and Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins.

Currently, The Oohlas are working on their next album and plans to tour again – maybe even Europe.
