On iTunes NOW! Click here Meiko - Meiko to purchase album.

I just read a cool write-up on Los Angeles-based artist Meiko at NIKKEI VIEW: The Asian American Blog.

Here's an excerpt from Nikkei View:

Meiko, a one-quarter Japanese American, or “quapa,” from Georgia by way of Los Angeles, is at the vanguard of the new folk music. At least, that’s the category where you’ll find her on iTunes. She strums and picks an acoustic guitar, so she fits the folksinger/troubadour image.

But her music isn’t based on the traditional “folk” music of the 1960s folk boom. Meiko’s the latest in a long line of singer-songwriters who came out of that earlier folk boom. Starting with the likes of Bob Dylan, and peers and disciples from Tom Rush and Eric Andersen to Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, singer-songwriters have skirted the edges of the rock-pop mainstream, playing their own music instead of traditional songs, with acoustic instruments as their foundation.
(you can read the rest of the article HERE.)

Meiko plays the Hotel Cafe January 15th. I'll definitely be there! Below is her video for "Boys with Girls."

MATHER LOUTH & FUJI MINX @ The Unknown Theater

Away from the glitz & glamour of Hollywood and in the shadows of paparazzi flashbulbs, The Unknown Theater was host to a surreal experience that included fire dancers, sultry burlesque dancing from Violet Valentine and the drug-inducing sounds of Mather Louth and Fuji Minx.

Mather Louth

Spoken word, art, music and theater are a few of the many things you can expect from any given night at The Unknown Theater. This night featured the mystical isolationist sounds of Mather Louth & Radio Noir. Framed by a bare stage and burlesque red as a lighted backdrop, Mather Louth's jazz influenced songs set the dark and mysterious mood that enveloped the late evening.

Returning to their roots, Fuji Minx opened the night with Valenti and Fry playing an acoustic set. Currently working on new material, Fuji Minx's stripped-down version of their songs translates beautifully in an intimate environment.

The Divine Ms. Audra Mae!!

I haven't been going to a lot of shows lately. My new work schedule doesn't really care about my sleep or lack there of. But looks like there's a show worth staying awake for next Wednesday when Audra Mae plays the very cool and legendary Derby in Hollywood. Oh yeah! Can't wait. Maybe I'll take a nap before. Yeah, I know...I'm getting old....

Belonging to a fine lineage of great performers, Mae reportedly is the great-grandniece of Judy Garland, first cousin (twice removed) of Liza Minnelli and the great-granddaughter of Garland's big band leader, Bobby Sherwood. In a subtle tribute to her great aunt, Mae’s hypnotic voice in “Ruby Shoes” just captivates. Mae’s strengths rely on weaving inspiring melodies that express a tragic melancholy, proving that simplicity, to the point of near silence, can hold the purest of emotions. Thanks to karebear121 for catching this show! And check out more Audra Mae songs on her page right HERE.

Sorry of the lack of posts. My work schedule has changed and now I have to get up for work at 3:30 am!! Whoa! Which means I haven’t been to any shows as of late but once my body gets used to this gawd-awful schedule, I’ll be back to watching shows in no time!! Just bring on the coffee!!

Lisa Riefell of KILLOLA

But anyways, one of the last shows I went to was Killola’s launch of their North American Tour at the Roxy! Co-headlining the event was the Pop/Alternative group Action Design.

Seeing Killola a number of times, I never get tired of watching this band. It’s like watching a new show each time. And with an arsenal of great songs, you’re sure to get a different show each night. Sparkplug Lisa Riefell looked sexy, as usual, this night in a white dress shirt. Killola, as usual, brought out the raw energy they’re famous for, playing familiar classic tunes like “Don’t Know” (one of my favorites) and newer songs, like their current hit single, “All of My Idols Are Dead” from their latest album, I AM THE MESSER which you can download for free at their widget below, courtesy of KILLOLA. You can download all ten songs for free and also get two bonus songs! How freakin’ cool is that?!!!

The treat this night was seeing Action Design, whose house-party sounds energized this all-ages crowd – including yours truly. Their new album, Never Say, from Popsmear Records is available on Tuesday. It’s filled with polished vocals from Emily and Jaycen's laserlike crisp guitars along with heart-thumping beats from Jake to dance to. Self-described as, "..."a refreshing mix of the band's punk rock roots infused with hard hitting dance rhythms and catchy bass lines wrought with think memorable vocal hooks..." Never Say includes catchy songs like, “Landmines,” and "Pale Horizon” that’ll make you wanna roll down the windows and sing along at the top of your lungs. This new album is fun to listen to and it truly shows on-stage. Just finishing Warped Tour, Action Design will be touring with Killola until October but they’ll be back Oct. 29th when they play in Riverside.

Monsters Are Waiting at The Getty Museum

Last Friday, I was able to catch Monsters Are Waiting at The Getty Museum's "Fridays Off The 405" series. It's a free outdoor event at an awesome location above Los Angeles so I was looking forward to seeing them play after what seemed like a very long hiatus. But boy! Word of advice - take a cab, bus or park a couple miles away and walk or ride a bike to the Getty. After being stuck in traffic for over an hour just to get into the parking structure, I managed to catch the last half of MAW's set.

Showing up in full preggo-mode, Annalee and the rest of the crew basically rawked out for a little over an hour in support of their new 6-track EP, "Ones and Zeros" from Kanine Records. Monsters Are Waiting are no strangers to the L.A. music scene. Their shows are always packed and their live shows is something you definitely have to experience. "Ones and Zeros," MAW's first EP started where their debut album, "Fascination," left off. Each song solidifying Monsters Are Waiting as the one of the best indie bands in L.A. Their lush arrangements in songs like "Crazy Love" and "Ones and Zeros" give the feeling of weightlessness in a dancehall filled with bubble-machine makers as colorful club lights wrap themselves around floating bubbles. This EP is filled with fun songs that fans of Monsters Are Waiting have come to expect. Also included in this EP is the fan favorite Stone Roses cover, "I Wanna Be Adored" which sadly I missed due to traffic.

You can get their cd on their website HERE or HERE. And check out better pictures from that night at Ross Reyes Photography HERE!!! And below is a vid for "Ones and Zeros."

FACELIFT LA: Lisa D'Amato, Ultraviolet Sound & Electric Valentine

One of the new best parties in town is Facelift LA and Thursday night at Hollywood’s Play Lounge proved why. It brought out an onslaught of the best club/techno/dance music groups in Los Angeles. What more can you ask for? Other than the event being free (RSVP for over 21 of course) and also having a free vodka bar until 10, on the bill this night was Electric Valentine, Ultraviolet Sound and Lisa D’Amato. Sa-WEEEET!

Lisa D'Amato

Lisa D'Amato and Dancers

Headlining the night was Lisa D’Amato. With the lack of a stage, Lisa didn’t miss a beat. After pushing back the packed house, Lisa and her dancers put on a pulse-pounding visual and electrifying performance.

Lisa D'Amato

Lisa D'Amato

Best known for her appearance on America’s Next Top Model, Lisa has made the successful transition to music working with the likes of super producer/manager Cisco Adler. The model with attitude backs up her sexy image with a sexy sound that is sure to keep people coming back for more. She recently played at this year’s Coachella and you can catch her next Hollywood show September 9th at The Viper Room. Lisa’s new album is due out in the summer of 2009.

Ultraviolet Sound didn’t disappoint either. They surely know how to put on a good show. Their songs are flawless and their new debut record, O.C.D. is one of the best dance albums put out in recent years. Ultraviolet are fast becoming one of L.A.'s hottest bands around. You may have heard or even seen front-woman Sarah Hudson before. She was a guest judge on the first season of BRAVO's Project Runway and she's reportedly Kate Hudson's cousin. OR you've probably read about these guys from one of their biggest fans, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

Ultraviolet Sound are currently on tour until November. They come back to L.A. when they play The Viper Room on September 9th. That’s gonna be a kick-ass show for sure! And hey! Check this out. Sara Hudson’s song “Girl on the Verge” from her 2004 debut album “Naked Truth” will be featured in the upcoming movie, “The House Bunny,” out August 22nd.

Opening the night was the duo of Lauren Deadly and Chris Deadly, also known as Electric Valentine. You probably also know them as part of the electro-punk group A Kiss Could Be Deadly. The latter was named Alternative Press’ #1 Unsigned Band for 2007 and their album which came out earlier this year has generated rave reviews for their fusion of electronic, dance and pop sounds. Now this is the duo I really wanted to see. Being a fan of A Kiss Could Be Deadly and never being able to catch that band live, I was looking forward to see Lauren and Chris’ new collaboration.

Electric Valentine's Lauren and Chris

Few bands come out with music as infectious and mesmerizing as Electric Valentine. I dare you not to fall in love with Lauren’s electrifying vocals while Chris pours on more 80’s/synthesized arrangements with beats that are ready-made for the dance floor. If you liked the dance/rock sounds of AKCBD, then you’ll love Electric Valentine. EV is definitely a band to look out for. Their debut EP will be released either late August or early September and will feature their hit single, “A Night With You.” Until then, they’re currently on tour and you can catch them when they return to Hollywood September 4th when they play The Knitting Factory.
